Ever wonder if ADHD isn’t just something doctors made up? It is!
“ADHD is not real. It’s all made up. Sometimes they call it ADHD, sometimes they call it ADD. ADD is just something someone made up…” That’s what people say.
“Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder isn’t real.” “When I was young there was no such thing. And there wasn’t the Internet or a black President, so those aren’t real either.”
“ADHD was invented by psychiatrists! We all know that psychiatrists have something wrong with them. It’s a name they made up.”
“It’s something they made up in 1975.”
“There was no such thing until 1975 when they made it up.”
That’s what the sceptics say. And you know what, that’s true. It’s not real.
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder was made up. Not like say, this rock. This was a rock before 1975.
This rock isn’t something anyone made up. This rock is real. The NAME, ‘rock’, yes, that’s something we made up. Someone made that up. The Germans made up a different name, “Stein’. The Spanish made up the name piedra. The Japanese made up Ishi. The name was made up.
Just as a group of doctors, no psychiatrists, made up the name Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. And from what I hear, the name is probably going to change to one that has the phrase Executive Function in it. To better describe what they now think is going on.
So yes, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is something psychiatrist’s made up. Looking at their patients who were struggling they compiled a list of the 18 symptoms that people complained out. But just because someone made it up the name, doesn’t mean this is not a real syndrome.
Someone made up the name table. And motherhood. And locomotive. And democracy. Countries were made up and everyone agreed on the borders. Then they drew maps. When they didn’t agree, then there would be a war.
But there’s no actual lines. You look at the world from space, you see A S I A.
Everything is made up. Including every diagnosis. Some doctors made up the diagnosis Haemorrhoids. Ask the person who has the diagnosis if they’re real. Don’t ask them to show you to prove it.
People make up names all the time to describe things. Like I could make up at term to describe people I’ve met, “Smug know-it-all who dismisses other people’s suffering because they can’t be bothered to understand it and is incapable of sympathy, empathy or understanding.”
See, I made that name up.
In German it would be Schiezze Kopf.
