Here’s the thing about diet: There are Inuit people who have lived for thousands of years on a diet of whale and seal and fish… basically 90% meat, with few or no veggies, lots of fat. And they did fine. There are a thousand different ways to eat. There’s not a lot of evidence yet that any particular diet does help ADHD, any more than it helps anything else.
I tried to speak with a nutritionist once about trying some diet adjustments for my son who has ADHD, just to see if anything would be a benefit. (I was still in a half educated, “riddled with guilt” stage regarding his meds.) When I told her my son had ADHD the first thing she said was, “DON’T LET THEM GIVE HIM DRUGS! HE DOESN’T NEED DRUGS!” I told her he was already medicated, and benefitting from it, and she looked at me like I was Josef Mengele.
After a few minutes of speaking with her even I could see that she had no real training, practical or otherwise, in working with kids with ADHD. She had rumors and stories, no real research or knowledge and was presenting herself as an expert. This was a huge lesson for me. Listen to the real experts! Doctors and clinicians know the truth and the truth changes from year to year, so keep educating yourself!
I hope Gabe will live without his medication some day, but I’m at a point now where I’m comfortable with the idea that he may take advantage of the amazing benefits of medication for the rest of his life. In the last five years just the quality of meds available has increased so drastically that I’m filled with hope for his future. He is currently on meds that have almost no side effects! What a leap from ritalin!

I’ve heard the same argument about “too much protection leads to increased risk-taking” applied to hockey. If you look at old clips, from the days before players wore helmets, face guards, and all that padding, the hockey was way better, and much less violent. Yeah, there were fights, but players knew that if they were going to viciously check someone, they’d probably wind up being carried off the ice too.
As for policing the internet, it’ll take the same thing that’s needed to police telemarketing. That is, to declare that offenders can no longer claim that they aren’t bound by a country’s laws, just because they don’t live in that country. As things stand now, we may have a Do Not Call list in Canada, but it doesn’t apply to all those telemarketers (most of whom are scammers) calling from the USA or India or wherever, and they make the most of it. I once had a shady telemarketer laugh at me and say, “The DNC doesn’t apply to us. We’re in America!” That was a mistake. I was in a strange mood, and my response was calm, but so deeply and personally offensive (not to mention horrifyingly obscene) that the telemarketer threatened to report me to the FCC for improper use of the phone line. I laughed and said, “The FCC doesn’t apply to me. I’m in Canada!”
(Yes, sometimes, the mark wins.)
