The Best Thing Anyone Ever Said About ADHD Medication

By Rick Green

I’ve stopped and started taking ADHD medication four times.

The first time I started was nearly 15 years ago.

The fourth time I started medication was yesterday.

Over the next month, I’ll tell the story of each start & stop. Each time I started was for a different reason. Each time I stopped was for a different reason.

But today, I want to talk about why I stopped taking medication the second time, and why I started again. Because it was the only time I succumbed to pressure and other people’s opinions.

ADHD Medication Abuse

I have been thinking about the abuse and misuse of ADHD medication. And here I’m referring to the official, approved, doctor prescribed, legally obtained medications, stimulant and otherwise. Like 99% of people with ADD who eventually try medication, I was reluctant to rely on a ‘crutch.’ I was worried I’d become addicted, that it would kill my creativity, turn me into a hop-head…

The Hardest Habit To Build? Building Habits

By Rick Green,

I’ve mentioned recently that at my lowest moments, despairing, I thought, “I wish I’d never been diagnosed.”

That’s not true, of course. Having an explanation for some of my challenges, an explanation that I can work with, has been hugely helpful.

My despair wasn’t about being diagnosed. It was that, “I tried to make changes. I tried to follow an organizing system. And I failed. Again. For a while I had hope that things were transforming! But obviously it didn’t last. And once again I’ve failed.”

I didn’t try hard enough to break my old habits… Which I also know is not true.

In fact, you cannot break old habits. You can’t just tough-it-out. You can’t just try harder.

“We couldn’t finish the entire set. It was impossible.”

By Rick Green,
This week we heard from a woman who purchased our 5-video set, ADHD Medication: Straight Answers to Big Questions. She was very upset because the three people in her household who are struggling with ADHD couldn’t sit through all 4 ½ hours of video.

ADHD Medication VideoNo kidding! I couldn’t either. I doubt anyone could.

If someone actually managed to white-knuckle their way through all five videos, I doubt they’d remember anything. Including their own name…

Can you Lend me Some of your ADHD Medication?

Can we talk about substance abuse?

Specifically abusing ADHD medication.

I’ve never actually had anyone ask me to lend them some of my medication. (How do you lend someone medication? Don’t you mean give? Cause I can’t see a pill being a ‘loaner’ that I’d want back afterwards.) But when my son was at university, taking an incredibly challenging course called Physics-Engineering, fellow students, non-ADHD students, approached him about getting a leg up with one of his magic pills.
