Any other coaches / Therapists to help me get back on track and out of the doom and gloom depression mode I am stuck in.

AnonymousInactiveJanuary 19, 2011 at 8:48 pmPost count: 14413I’m new to this so don’t know much or many people or resources as yet. I’ll ask a few people and post. In the meantime you might try calling some of the local hotlines. Never hurts to ask. In years long past I recall people on the phones who were happy to have ANYONE call about anything. (ala the Maytag repairman) Like the “mode” thing. Guess I have them where I get stuck, too, and makes me think I can find some ways to get unstuck when that happens.

AnonymousInactiveJanuary 19, 2011 at 11:39 pmPost count: 14413Thanks for looking into this.
I am sorry but I don’t think that I should rely on the Maytag repairman, Dex, the Shell Answer Man, or even Mikey to help me with my meds for ADD, depression and anxiety.

AnonymousInactiveJanuary 20, 2011 at 6:42 amPost count: 14413I’m in Chicago as well and the last psychiatrist I went to said “ADHD is a creation of the pharmaceutical companies to sell more drugs.” Whoa! Not all doctors are created equal so simply looking in the phone book/online will not guarantee quality care or a physician who knows how to treat ADHD. As a small business owner who is uninsured I’m going to struggle with my untreated symptoms until I receive a referral from someone who knows the Dr.is good. I can’t afford to waste another $150 on a ‘psychiatrist’ who doesn’t believe in a disorder that makes my life hell everyday.
Dr. J, someone…please help!

AnonymousInactiveJanuary 20, 2011 at 7:11 pmPost count: 14413tly- wasn’t thinking to ask a hotline person about any specific., it’s just that I recall they were students and pretty much wired into the psych community- maybe good people to ask who’s doing what. Should have said as much. I wouldn’t ask Mikey either. A kid on a sugar rush is likely to come up with everything else.
shuz4me- I see your thoughts on this to be spot on but for one detail that might be highlighted- ADULT adhd. I’ve asked and one answer was “some idiot” and why- “they were confused, didn’t know what they were doing.” A real referral might come from Dr J, I know when professionals in most fields “talk turkey” they will notice without fail anyone not up to snuff. Referrals usually only say those who are involved get a piece of the action. It’s worth the effort to ferret out the real deal. I’m sure there will be a few here.

AnonymousInactiveJanuary 23, 2011 at 5:03 amPost count: 14413Was watching video on WEBINAR on this site. Dr J says there are local psych websites everywhere, among other bits of information that are of interest. Also, there is a live chat Wed 26 January 1PM Eastern (2PM Chicago, etc.) on the WEBINAR. I haven’t found any information I would deem reliable by asking around. I’ll be seeing my own pych team 2 Feb, perhaps they know of a private therapist who specializes.

AnonymousInactiveFebruary 9, 2011 at 4:00 pmPost count: 14413Though not a specialist I’m now seeing a psychiatrist and psychologist at Stone Mental Health clinic at Northwestern for free. Both are last year students with an older Dr. overseeing them but I’ve found this to be great because they are constantly researching the latest & greatest ways to treat and manage Adult ADHD. In the last 2 weeks I’ve gotten more accomplished than I have in months thanks to Adderall XR 15mg (generic) and some tips the psychologist gave me. Also, they think that I have mild depression so I’m going to start on an anti-depressant and behavioral activation therapy once my body becomes used to the Adderall XR.

psychologists? We have an appointment to see Dr. Barker for our son (I have ADHD, too) but a friend used the Chisholm Centre and gave rave reviews. Any advice on who to go with? I would love some guidance…

AnonymousInactiveOctober 1, 2012 at 8:06 pmPost count: 14413I’d like to know too. I’m in Chicago also. I’m an undiagnosed adult and I’ve been sure I have this for a long time. I have no insurance and I’m not working so I also can’t afford 150.00 sessions. Where can you go for diagnosis and support? I went on a temp job, mapquested the route because I always get lost, got to the destination but got lost coming back the same route and went about 5 miles out of my way because I missed the turn coming back. My husband is going to kill me if I don’t get rid of the piles of cluttered mail, paper, clothes, etc. I’ve got over 400 e-mails in my inbox that I can’t seem to get through. I just can’t get organized with things and feel like every day I’m doing the same research on where to go but not getting anywhere. Help!
REPORT ABUSEOctober 1, 2012 at 8:40 pm #99368G’day Shydi! I was reading posts yesterday and I wondered why we couldn’t help one another with getting treatment when encountering financial obstacles. Well, we all face obstacles I suppose, but I mean in the cases where people are missing out due to financial hardship. I haven’t got the foggiest idea how many members there are here, but going by how quiet the forum usually is I’d suggest not very many 😆 Anyway, what if Admin collected a small amount from all of us for this specific reason? 💡
