If you want to get really upset at the anti-drug propaganda that anyone who can develop a webpage can promote . . .

    go to http://www.cchrint.org/psychiatric-disorders

It is a group cloaking itself in the mantle of “informed consent” and ‘preventing mental health abuse” – that is against the entire specialty of psychiatry. Anti drug, anti-diagnosis. . . founded by the Church of Scientology. Yup – that’s a reputable group to seek medical direction from. . .

If disease in what ever form can affect any other system / organ in the body . . .? why would the brain be immune ?

What is the real “mental health abuse” in my life is trying to co-parent my brilliant 8 year old son who has responded remarkably to Concerta. . . with his father who has denied his own ADHD diagnosis and listens to info off ill-informed sites like CCHR – posted on his sisters facebook page. . . and does not consistantly give our son the medication he needs to be successful.

Labels are only debilitating if you attach a negative connotation. ADHD brains are also amazing – but it is a double edged sword that like any condition – needs to managed to exploit the positives and minimize the negatives. I will raise my son to fully understand the great attirbutes from his “special brain” (as I explained it to him) . . . along with learning the healthy habits that he will need ti develop to manage the “busy part of his brain”. BTW – I myself have been recently diagnosed and have been fortunate to expereince first had the benefit of treatment with medications. However – pills are never 100% of the answer. .. for the rest I am working with an ADD coach, and trying to cultivate a healthy lifestyle (enough sleep, exercise, and good nutrition)

As an RN – I am firmly rooted in emperical medicine. Evidenced based studies.

If only his father paid as much attention to feeding our son a high quality diet as he does spouting this crap he reads second hand off of facebook.

Dr. J. . . what can I say to his father to combat this type of pseudo-science garbage ?? I know I can’t change his attitude. . .

    thanks for listening . .

    👿 👿 👿

Not sure how I am going to get to sleep after reading this crap. . . it is so upsetting

Ok think my blood pressure just went up a few notches!!

As to the conspiracy theory in general:

I think you could when calm ( I tried but got too ticked off) easily argue against this article with the fact that it doesn’t mention any facts itself. That said however, I don’t think that someone firmly entrenched in the anti-pharma conspiracy belief is going to want to hear about it.

I too would be interested in Dr.J’s input on this.

Your post caught my attention because one of my daughters was telling me the other day that “they” were suppressing a cancer cure because of the potential billions of loss to the pharmaceutical industry. When I asked her where she read it, she couldn’t really remember. I had to pose a few questions to get her to think about the logic of this and I believe I got through to her, but this kind of thing drives me nuts.

In the meantime, just googled “responses to conspiracy theories” and found this post

    http://www.rationalskepticism.org/conspiracy-theories/how-to-deal-with-a-ct-at-work-t4347-40.html

I think the following excerpt from one of the posts is interesting:

“As an ex-conspiracy theorist, I believe the best way to help him is to suggest alternate ways of seeing the same thing. CTs are notoriously arrogant – they believe that they can see patterns and relationships which the rest of us cannot (just google the term ‘sheeple’ and, once you’re past the dictionary sites, notice how many hits come from conspiracy sites) and that they are more ‘awake’. When challenged directly they will often resort to emotional and condescending responses. Similar to how religious believers assume we can’t be familiar with their holy books because, if we were, then we’d be converts – CTs will assume you just don’t know enough, and that’s why you don’t believe.

Instead, try to talk about these subjects in ways where their curiosity and need to understand things is actually stimulated: such as understanding fallacies, and the various ways the human brain misinterprets things. They may need time, and a great deal of patience on your part, to gradually realise that their motivation to discover things and see ‘through the veil’ is actually separate from what they end up believing. Unfortunately, from experience, if you challenge them too bluntly, those two things will become compacted together and drive them deeper into self-reinforcing conspiracies.”

Anyway Nunuq68, thanks for a thought provoking post despite the fact it was generated out of what must be supreme frustration. Good luck with your situation, I can only imagine how very trying it must be.

Wow Nellie. . . you are so articulate. And I need a voice of reason regarding this. I am usually the articulate one – however this has really punched some buttons with me. Thanks you for teh references and your thoughtful comments. And I do believe that there is some merit in the saying “keep your friends close and your enemies closer.” So I really do need to try and undersatnd as much as I can about his belief system (is he actually subscribing to the Church of Scientology) in order to be able to address it and anticipate his responses. If he does – maybe he’ll stop taking his epilepsy drugs as well ??

But today I came home to the friustration that Dad was supposed to pick up my son’s meds this morning (before school). . .but did not pick them up until 4pm. So – clearly he would not have gotten his meds (again) today. So maybe I need to go with having the school administer his meds as suggested by our family doc and the paediatrician this week.

I need more thought ful and supportive comments like your own.

    Thank you
