Was patient of Dr. J, now live 6 hrs away. How do I get new meds

Dr. J I was in your Clarke study group many years ago (can’t remember exactly, but maybe 17 years ago). At that time I was prescribed Ritalin and it changed my life. Took away the flash anger issue. My big problem now is that I need to focus/concentrate on some new stuff like astronomy/cosmology etc. I think I need a different med but my local Dr. tells me he can lose his license if he prescribes anything (not that he knows what to prescribe). He did set up a referral that was a 5 hr one way drive away and he wanted to see me 3 times and I had to pay. I have no money and I think he thought I was looking for an initial diagnosis instead of a meds change. I have stopped Ritalin since many of the stressors are no longer there now that I have retired. Still lose my cool very occasionally, but no where near as extreme. I have also tried L-Theanine after seeing the UBC? report, but it actually seemed to make things worse so I stopped it after only a few days. I am now taking Krill oil (VERY expensive) but just saw in another post that the EPA:DHA ratio may not be high enough.

How can I get the proper meds?

It’s not a case of your doctor’s possibly losing his license for prescribing anything; it’s more a case of his losing it if he prescribes something without fully knowing what he’s doing, and it causes you harm.

It sounds as if your doctor has been shirking his professional responsibility to keep updating his knowledge with the most recent information. If that’s the case, then you need to find another doctor, preferably one who is a more recent graduate, or has at least kept on top of medical developments. Are there any other doctors near you?

Did you explain to the doctor who was 5 hours away, that you were diagnosed with ADHD as a child, and that medical science has determined that ADHD is NOT something you outgrow? It’s been quite a few years since it was established that you don’t outgrow it; you just get better at hiding the symptoms. Therefore, you don’t need another initial diagnosis. However, it may be that this other doctor wanted to determine if there were any other conditions besides ADHD that were causing your problems.

Also, where are you studying? If it’s at a college or university, I can pretty much guarantee you that your Student Services Department has experience in assisting students with ADHD and/or other mental conditions that require special accommodations. Those accommodations may be all that you need to help you, so you won’t need a change in medications. Going from a high school environment into a university/college one is a HUGE change. All students have some difficulty adjusting their studying and working methods to this new environment. Those of us with ADHD have enormous difficulty in making these adjustments, and many of us need special help.

Student Services should also have a psychologist or psychiatrist on staff. So talk to Student Services, and tell them your history and the problems you’re having with your current doctor’s unwillingness to treat you. That staff psych may be able to help you, where your doctor refused to.

I am 68 yrs old. Was diagnosed by Dr. Jains at about 50. My Dr. just graduated. You probably live in Southern Ontario where there are lots of Drs. It would have to give up my Dr and go on a waiting list for 2 or 3 years to get another Dr. That is the reality for us up North (remember the 5 hr drive?) The Dr I was refered to did not talk to me, only his secretary. I told her I just needed a new med but she was simply following a script. Somehow I have to get back to Dr Jains since he is the only Dr I have ever known who knows anything about ADD. Have a look at a map, there are NO Drs that can help with ADD ANYWHERE north of Barrie.

OK, I am happy for all the successful patients that I have treated but just want to remind you that this is a world wide site and somewhere in the Netherlands someone is going…..where’s Barrie? Someone in Arkansas is saying, where’s Canada?
