Funny thing is I know a number of ADDers besides myself that LOVE the “trance” genre of music from Artists like Tiesto, Paul Van Dyk, Armin Van Buren, etc…..And that got me thinking perhaps the pace of the music, the strong underbeats, and the high level of sensory stimulation it provides make us ADDers “pre-programmed” to like it?
Outwardly (a 40ish accountant) I think I hardly fit the profile of your typical “trance addict”. Although I like a VERY broad range of music, Trance has become BY FAR my favourite genre of music.
If you’re unfamiliar with “trance” (or even if you ARE familiar with it) check out this awesome track from Glenn Morrison called “contact”. Click over to about the 25 second mark to get right to the “good stuff”.(BTW — he will be performing in Kitchener on March 11th for anyone interested):

Here are a couple more Trance “standards”:
Tiesto – Elements of Life:

Tiesto – Adagio for strings:

I don’t know if it has anything to do with ADD/ADHD or not I just really like strong music and any type of real excitement not something like a horror movie, they are boring too and I can’t stand watching movies anyway. I don’t like the usual things, I was not good at dating, especially the being late part lol. For me most people’s live are totally boring. Most people act like they are too mature and responsible to enjoy it. I think these people need to get out of themselves, get a life and live a little. Funny thing is I have pushed many people to try things they never would normally. Some people get offended by it, I guess they are afraid something will happen to them ( people worry too much ). A few others have tried and said “I’d never do that again but I’m glad I did because it has given me something to tell my grand children”. You only live once why experience as much as you can.

REPORT ABUSEMay 19, 2015 at 9:41 pm #127101Know a few fellow ADDers. Coincidentally they all are totally into EDM. More specifically Trance and Progressive house including myself. Being a programmer I am always plugged into some good progressive while working. It helps me concentrate a lot more than anything else I ever tried. I think the 120+ bpm tune keeps your crazy brain from getting distracted.
REPORT ABUSEJune 3, 2015 at 5:27 pm #127201I am almost embarrassed to admit this but my crazy adhd brain craves country music – the loud and stupid kind (definitely not the lovesick songs). Especially when driving!
I try to compromise by listening to Corb Lund I think-“The truck got Stuck”
, “Bible on the Dash” are a bit more socially acceptable than “The Boys Round Here” and “Beer for My Horses”Ooops!! There go the ear worms again! Singing all of the above at the same time.
REPORT ABUSEJune 4, 2015 at 8:19 pm #127216There could be a connection to ADHD and music taste, no doubt. Two of my kids who have ADHD happen to like house music and find it stimulating. Maybe age is a factor? I used to like punk rock in my youth before there was house music. Now I do still like a beat but am prone to examine lyrics and want my music to have rhythm and soothe me…like this one: https://youtu.be/nruUewOQZiQ?list=RDnruUewOQZiQ
June 5, 2015 at 7:57 pm #127221wiredonjava Thanks for posting the link – I liked it. Seem I need a definite beat, but behind the lyrics not in front of them? I wish I knew enough about music to figure out exactly what it is I am looking for.
When I am driving, especially on the highway, I use music to drown out my thoughts so I concentrate more on the traffic – but I shut off the music when merging or when traffic is being stupid.
June 7, 2015 at 10:30 am #127228WOW – thanks for sharing your observations about this genre of music. I can totally relate. I love to play my hand-drums and I find that I often create awesome trance feelings. When I attend drum circles, I inevitable lead the group into trance like states of groove.
