Basically, it is a genetic disorder that creates a problem in the regulation of a neurotransmitter called dopamine. Ultimately, the only way the brain turns on is to create enough external or internal stimulation or to get an external source of this neurochemical. When the brain turns on, it works. When the brain is not on, it feels like a massive paralysis trying to get it started. It is more complicated than this but this is a start.
