CBD Oil and ADHD – Research and How CBD Works
CBD or cannabidiol is one of the active compounds found in cannabis plants. It is a natural occurring compound that is valued for its health benefits.
Cannabidiol has established its role in helping some mental health conditions and physical pain problems.
CBD and Cannabis Research
Research and clinical studies on CBD is still in its infancy stage. Moreso, the relationship of CBD and ADHD. Much of what we know right now is from the studies about cannabis in general and its benefits to the human body.
Inattentiveness and hyperactivity are two common symptoms of ADHD. In a preclinical trial, rats were induced with drugs causing these two symptoms. The results show that the subjects given CBD had reduced hyperactivity.
A clinical trial to humans who were a group of thirty adults were given placebo and Sativex (a CBD medication). The medicated adults showed improvement in their hyperactivity, attention span and emotional control compared to the placebo group.
How CBD works
Our bodies contain two cannabinoid receptors called CB1 and CB2. When CBD oil enters the body, it interacts with these receptors which then directly affects specific parts of the body.
CB1 receptors are found to be in abundance inside the brain while CB2 are more abundant in the immune system. CB1 is heavily related to epilepsy and pain and inflammation for CB2.
It is believed that CBD triggers the body to produce more cannabinoids from its system. CBD plus the body’s cannabinoid is believed to be the reason for decreased anxiety and hyperactivity.
How to use CBD oil
There are many ways to take CBD products. The most recommended and most concentrated would be CBD oil.
CBD oil can be ingested orally by dropping the tincture under the tongue. This is the fastest way to ingest CBD oil as it directly travels to the bloodstream.
Other ways could be by infusing drinks or food before consumption, or taking edibles. Vaping is another method, but it is not recommended.
Right now, there are no guidelines on how to use CBD to manage symptoms of ADHD such as hyperactivity and fidgeting.
In incorporating CBD to manage symptoms, it is best to go low and slow. Start with the lowest possible dosage and increase gradually so the body could adjust to this substance you are introducing to it. It will also reduce the risk of negative side effects.
Is it legal?
CBD products are readily available in the market. However, not all countries have legalized this. Just be sure you are well informed about local and federal laws before purchasing any CBD product.
Since the 2018 Farm Bill was enacted, hemp products became legal as long as they contain 0.3% THC, another active ingredient which is responsible for giving the “high” effect.
Unlike marijuana, CBD products are less restricted, it is still best to check on laws regulating this kind of product.
CBD Oil for Treatment of ADHD Symptoms?
CBD could very well be another treatment option for ADHD symptoms. It has proven its benefits to its patients with theoretical and anecdotal evidence. My hope is for more scientific studies to be conducted to explore CBD’s relationship with ADHD.
