    I have only come across one psychiatrist in all of Greater Vancouver area who specializes in this, but the wait time is over 5 months. Anybody know of others or GPs who are willing to listen as opposed to mine who think it is all bs.

    I had a horrible time finding anyone so I spent two plus years studying ADHD with my doctor. I went to one psychiatrist who said I was not ADD I was just – and he listed off all the characteristics of ADD. He had a general practice and all I wanted to know was the choices of meds available. He said I need something to calm my over active brain. I was already on Ritalin from my doctor and along with supplements, diet and a somewhat organized routine I am doing okay. I am a certified counsellor and mentor youth with ‘learning difficulties’ and that helps a lot. Gabor Mate, MD went to a children’s psychiatrist for his tests. He may be able to direct you. (See Scattered Minds by Gabor Mate). Good luck and hang in there, it’s worth it. I laugh at myself all the time now when I do things and that helps. Cheers! jwl

    Hello JWL,

    Thank you for your response and sharing your story it was really encouraging. Are you by any chance from the Greater Vancouver area? I have only taken self tests and the indications are strong, though I of course don’t accept them as firm diagnoses just yet. Perhaps, I am being a little impatient, but I was just reaching out to see if anybody had done the same research on practitioners in the Vancouver area who might be able to point me to the same resources. It is also a little confusing because this my first time reach out for psychiatric counselling and I am just learning who to turn to. The difference between a psychiatrist or psychologists and private vs MSP options. Are counsellors also qualified to treat or assess patients for disorder such as ADHD?

    Thanks again,

    -palma

    Hi Palma

    Check out these Vancouver links if you have not done so already;

    http://www.addcoach4u.com/adultadd.html

    http://www.vcn.bc.ca/chaddvan/

    At the first link, you can request a list of ADD practitioners in the Van area. I’m on Van Island, and had to travel to Victoria to see a psychiatrist with an interest in adults with ADHD. My GP is not an ADD specialist, but was open to listening once I had done my homework. Took a few months research and another few months to get an appointment, but things are working out well now.

    Good luck!

    Hi I was just diagnosed as ADH in August .. got lucky, went to the Vancouver Health authority, mental health unit .. they have them on Vancouver island so i guess also in Van. Takes a few weeks to get to see a psych and i am on 300 Wellbutrin XL, which seems to do nothing .. but i am hyper, impatient, etc adh so not good at waiting. On 3 drugs now, at 60, v good pharmasist checked that they would work together without major problems.

    Family doctor has decided to leave town, clinic is under staffed so i am out of luck… maybe get into walkin clinic.

    Curious.. local naturo path in Coombs area, claims to have experience with ADH .. anyone tried the alternate medics ?

    cheers

    Good luck if you live in the states – the waiting lists are HUGE, and doctors are leaving the trade left and right down here.

    Takes months to get in, then they don’t really know all that much.
