What would be the equivilent dosage of me taking adderall 30 mg 2 X a day to being switched to dexedrine. My doc has me on 15 mg of dexedrine 2 x a day. I’ve been on adderall for six months and theres a shortage of the drug so my doc switched me to dexedrine.

    Brand Adderall, or generic?

    IR or XR (extended release)

Oh I guess 2 times a day would be IR.

What about using the XR version one time a day? That’s what I do. (20mg 1 time a day – AM, XR version)……. no shortage of that apparently, and it’s actually beginning to help a little bit. My wife thinks I’m easier to get along with and more helpful when she asks me to help. I don’t tell her I’m busy, or “just a minute” or sound irritated any more according to her.

It sounds like they will probably up me a bit, though.

I’d be really scared taking the IR version………. but that’s just ME and my own body, etc. I am not judging you or your doctor or needs at all.

Dexedrine is the brand name. The generic name is Dextroamphetamine – there is a short acting, and an intermetiate acting.

The short acting brand name is Dexedrine Dextrostat, intermetiate acting for the Brand Dexedrine would or should be Spansule.

5-6 hours for Dexedrine Dextrostat and 6-8 hours for the IR Adderall/generic.

At least that’s what my meds charts list………. and the “approximate target dosage range” is shown to be the same on this chart – I AM NOT A DOCTOR! So don’t take that as gospel – it’s just the information I have from MY doctor.

I fill both XR and IR adderall (generic form). Once in a great while, I fill my IR, to keep as a back up. If I miss my XR, in the morning (weekends are the most likely time this happens), I use the IR, instead, so I’m not up all night.

Our town is out of the IR, or so I thought. Turns out I just needed to look at a different pharmacy. They had some in and filled it for me.

There are a limited amount of pills that can be provided to a pharmacist with Adderall. Amphetamine is a class II controlled substance, so has to be tracked. That’s why they limit the supply. I’m not sure how switching to another amphetamine would help. It’s just as controlled, I’m assuming.

Also, if you live in a college town, try to get your scrip filled before finals week. That’s when the kids who should be taking it, actually start taking it. The pharmacy really runs low during those times.

Okay, this is weird. I didn’t open up the bag of pills I got from the different pharmacy until this morning. They look completely different than my usual ones. It says it’s the generic of Adderall, but it’s dextroamphetamine salts, not regular amphetamine salts. Still supposed to be the adderall generic.

So evidently, dextroamphetamine is not as in short supply. Well, that answers one question.

So what’s the difference? Is this huge enough for me to worry about? Is the pharmacy just replacing one with the other because of the shortage???

I think this is old news. This article is dated 2012 and I am pretty sure it is a reprint from one that ran a year or so before that.

I just got a prescription filled this morning, and no problems. I have noticed there are two generics out there for the 10mg pill. They both have gluco-amphetamine, just like the name brand. There is a flat ovoid pill that is dark blue with a stamped line across the back side and another that is powder blue round pill with a cross stamped on the back side. I switched to the powder blue one, because I can break the pill into fourths.

    I’m confused….

What article? And why does it matter? It looks like the last post in this thread was December 8, 2011.

So, are you saying that the thread should be removed, because it’s old news?

    @blackdog,

No. My point was not that this thread should be discounted or deleted. I was just trying to put this into perspective by locating the sources in time.

Several good questions that might be answered by continuing this thread:

    Is there still a shortage?

Are the suppliers of Generics changing?

Does Obamacare have an effect on drug availability in general not just Class II controlled substances?

Does Rolling Aspergers into Autism have an effect on the diagnosis and treatment of ADD/ADHD?

I am sure there are many more questions. This thread is still very relevant.

Sorry for any misunderstanding. I laugh because here we are all ADD and more, all with communications difficulties, trying to communicate over an imperfect medium.

Looks like that post @Shutterbug55 replied to was spam that has since been deleted by the moderators. Spammers will sometimes sneak an “innocent question” post into a really old thread, trying to get people to click on the link to an article, in an attempt to increase the per-click revenue they get.

    Sneaky little buggers, aren’t they?

    @shutterbug55

LOL, confused is my normal state so no worries and no need to apologize. 🙂

I was just curious as to the meaning of your post. I suspected that you may have been responding to a post that had somehow been removed. I have seen that happen before, the spam inserted into a really old thread.

This is actually the second response I have typed. I lost the first one when I accidently logged out somehow. I was saying that I don’t see how there could be a shortage unless a mistake was made by the pharmaceutical company or if ingredients were somehow in short supply.

“Obamacare” as it has become known should improve the availability of medications I would think, if part of the change is to provide some assistance to those who can not afford to buy meds. I don’t know because I don’t understand how healthcare works in the States. Or how anything in the States works for that matter. I gave up trying to understand a long time ago.

I don’t see how eliminaitng the term Aspergers can affect ADHD diagnosis and treatment. If it is determined that ADHD also fits into the Autism Spectrum then that might make a difference.

Actually, it might make a very positive difference, since Autism is well established and accepted so no one can say it doesn’t exist.

We should have a “World ADHD Day” where everyone with ADHD goes off their meds and gives their symptoms free rein.  That would make believers out of a lot of sceptics.

I read on psychcentral.com that ADHD is part of the Autism spectrum.  Anyway, my real purpose here now is to talk about my medication.  I have been taking Vyvanse which was being supplied to me for free by the manufacturer, Shire.  However, they turned my application down this year.  I had been warned by my psychiatrist that the drug companies were starting to try and get out of supplying free drugs.  I don’t know why.  I didn’t expect that to apply to me as my circumstances have not changed. My medical doctor put me on 10 mg amphetamine salts. I was on 60 mg Vyvanse. I am having a very hard time.  Perhaps because I had finally felt stable and was functioning better than I had in years, and boom, here I am again.  My brain is not working. My body is not moving.  I’m sleeping all of the time. It makes me doubt myself, the diagnosis, the treatment. . .

As to the shortage of drugs, about two years ago I had to change another medication because of the manufacturer not having any and was told it was due to the crises in the middle east where most of the manufacturers are located.  This also applied to other goods.  When I tried to buy more yarn to finish a crochet project, the shelves were almost empty and I was told the same thing about the crises in the middle east hampering production and shipment.  It seems to me there has always been a crisis in the middle east so why would any sane person locate production there to start with.
