AnonymousInactiveMarch 24, 2010 at 1:10 pmPost count: 14413Hey Everyone!!
So I’ve been really struggling lately, and it’s mainly because I know I am needing to make some changes. So many shifts are happening and the only option is to deal with things. I’ve known I’ve had ADHD since I was 18 (am 31 now), however I never really felt the affects of it until the last 5 years when I’ve become really really unhappy with my life situation. I have been unable to focus on one thing at a time, I see big pictures but get anxious at taking the baby steps…I just want to be at the end!!! Then I get overwhelmed, bored at trying and just don’t do anything at all. I have remained stuck…although trying many different things to move forward. I’m a walking contradiction!!!! Haha AH!
What I am looking for is some help! Does anyone know of any good doctors they can recommend to help me with my ADHD? I have tried Ritalin before in University and honestly I hated it. I looked like death! I had dark circles under my eyes and I was losing weight. Maybe it wasn’t the right dosage or the right medication for me. Anyways, I’m looking to get this under control!!! I am not ashamed of having ADHD…I’m just frustrated and have not been able to use the gifts and positive things that come along with this wonderful way of being, to its fullest effects. I am only experiencing the negative affects of it. I am ready for a change!!! and to fully commit myself in managing this.
I look forward to hearing people’s suggestions!! Happy Wednesday!!!
Lianne

AnonymousInactiveMay 13, 2010 at 4:08 amPost count: 14413I see the same PDoc. He didn’t laugh at me or tell me that I was crazy.
Instead, he listened carefully to my story, asked seemingly pertinent questions AND repeatedly apologized for the misdiagnoses and ‘brush-offs’ I had endured while trying to find assistance from the other MD and PDoc I had seen.
It was rather refreshing to have someone listen (and carefully at that!) and respond to my questions rather than brushing me off.
Sorry it took so long to respond but I’ve been up to my eyeballs in work, work, work. Yes, I’m less behind now than I was before but….. perfection hasn’t arrived yet. Maybe by tomorrow morning??
Good luck!

REPORT ABUSEI’m happy you have found some great support! I will keep in mind about Stephen. My dad just started seeing someone that does cognitive behaviour therapy (my dad has ADD as well) and he’s been seeing great results and feeling much better. He’s on meds too, so I may look into that as well. YAY!
May 13, 2010 at 4:18 pm #93209I see the same doc too.
Also, my family doctor is good about stuff, and I *really* lucked into an excellent counsellor fit at my school (college). I had done CBT in the past with mixed/no results (probably because it was aimed at the depression which was being caused by the undiagnosed and untreated ADHD…but I digress…). Anyway, what I have been working on with my school counsellor this year is mindfulness practice, which is an ancient Buddhist concept that is beginning to enter mainstream psych practice as a therapy for depression/anxiety/ADHD (not sure about how widespread the ADHD use is yet).
Here’s a brief wiki entry on one variant of mindfulness therapy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mindfulness-based_cognitive_therapy
Something to consider, maybe, if you’re looking into counselling. Good luck!

Cheers,

REPORT ABUSEAugust 12, 2010 at 6:38 pm #93212Dr. John Fleming on Eglinton Avenue was very good. He actually did one of the webinars on this site, I think. But he’s a psychologist. And you have to pay. On the plus side, he has ADHD so he knows of what he speaks.

AnonymousInactiveSeptember 18, 2012 at 3:20 pmPost count: 14413I also see Dr. Sibalis a couple of times a year now. About 6 years ago he helped diagnose me with Bipolar disorder with comorbid ADHD. It took awhile to test different meds but patiently we did. I have been absolutely stable since then even with the death of my partner 3 years ago (i grieved but never went down to the really dark places).
I am now a self-help coach and author with a successful career doing what i love.
I strongly recommend Dr. Sibalis, he is a true professional.
