AnonymousInactiveOctober 25, 2011 at 6:30 pmPost count: 14413After going through 8 jobs in 9 years and our house being so messy that it would be grounds for child services to take our child away, I finally built up the courage to see my doctor and explain my problems and the ‘noise in my head’ and my failures in elementary school.
He agreed I definitely had ADHD and put me on 5mg of slow release Dexadine twice a day.
But it really only worked for 3 days. I was able to get things done, clean the house, not be glued to my laptop all day, go out and actually buy food instead of eating out (because there’s no food in the fridge), and I was able to sleep at night. Finally no noisy in my head keeping me up. Also I finally was relaxed. It was very ‘corrective’ for me. It’s hard to explain. My eyesight got better, my fingers had less shakes in them.
I saw him a week later and explained how it wasn’t working anymore. He upped the dosage to what he said was the ‘maximum’ dosage and told me to take 10mg (2x5mg) twice a day. I find it lasts about 5 hours.
Forward a couple of weeks and here I am, 2pm in bed for hours procrastinating on the Internet, not even showered, on the laptop, house messy again. Noisy head again. Back to losing keys, forgetting wallet, not following my ‘to do list’ I made when the meds were working.
I then decided to look into other peoples dosages and it seems that their 8 year old children are taking more Dexidrine than I am.
It’s just that I’ve failed everything I’ve done in my life (failed grade 2, failed out of school, failed driving tests, failed in the workplace) and finally there was some hope for a few days and if this is the ‘maximum’ dosage it certainly isn’t working.
For adults, I keep reading that Adderal IR, 20mg 3 times a day are what most adults take in the United States for it to ‘work’ for adults with ADHD.
I’m not sure what options I have in Canada, but I need help.
My Doctor pretty much limited me at my dose and said to resolve my issue I’ll have to start making lists of things to do and follow them. I already made a list weeks ago and stopped following it when the meds stopped working.
So now I feel stuck and have to say that I feel it’s unfair to read the Americans talk about their ‘life changing’ success stories with Adderall, and here I sit with a 10mg dosage reading how a mother gives her 8 year 30mg slow release before school and that works for the child.
Well sorry for rambling.. it’s 2:29pm and I better go take my morning shower now and stop procrastinating on the Internet… while I’m on 10mg of Dexidrine right now.
REPORT ABUSEOctober 25, 2011 at 11:16 pm #109109I don’t know if the recommended dosing or the legally allowed dosing is different in Canada vis a vis the U.S. but the dosage you are on sounds quite low. 5 – 10 mg doesn’t even touch me. I have previously been on dexedrine and there were a couple of times at bedtime when instead of grabbing my vitamins I accidentally grabbed my dexedrine and took 15 mg. I realized my mistake about 5 seconds too late. What happened? I just went to sleep.
Go to the web and take a look at the dosage recommendations from the dexedrine drug information label. Also note that there is a difference between the generic dexedrine and the brand. 15 mg of generic dex has only 12.5 mg of dex in the thing. Really, read the labels.
In my humble opinion, getting the right meds is only the beginning. The meds don’t make the ADD go away. The meds just help turn the ADD 800 lb gorilla into a potentially managable 200 lb gorilla … but it’s still a damn strong gorilla..
Your doctor’s comment about you “just needing to make lists and follow them” indicates to me that your Dr. is clueless. If just “make a list and follow it” were a suggestion that actually worked then this web-site would not exist.
Having ADD sucks but you have taken the first BIG step, getting the meds. Do your homework on dosing and get another appointment iwth the doctor and educate the doctor. All you can do is keep your head up and keep plugging away.

AnonymousInactiveOctober 27, 2011 at 2:00 amPost count: 14413are you seeing a psychiatrist or general doctor? I’m taking 15mg twice a day. Not super effective anymore >_<. very frustrating. hopefully, if I can get my sleep in order, this will change. maybe you need to see a specialist or try another medication? however, do not ever take more than prescribed as these meds need to be very carefully controlled by doctors for physical and mental safety.
