You need to focus on positive side of confirming of the ADHD diagnosis. Finding the
right support will improve the quality of your life
An ADHD psych/specialist will not diagnosis you as ADHD unless you meet the criteria.
You can find out pretty quickly where the experts are in your area. Doctors who are
known for their ADHD expertise will NOT put the label of ADHD on you arbitrarily.
You will be asked to give a history since childhood and assess you symptoms. A good
start is the test on this website.
After I took the test I did some research and found a community psych. it turned out when
I saw him he was not too enthused about treating Adult ADD. In his discussion he said that
it should have been diagnosed when i was in school. I decided I was wasting my time with this guy.
I continued to search and found an ADHD clinic and was in fact diagnosed with Adult ADD.
That was almost 4 months and I am doing much better. I have a lot of hard work ahead but
it is worth it.
If you are in Canada you look for the closest medical teaching center in the area. Some of
the student health services at local colleges and universities have to make referrals for
students all the time for learning disorders. If you call the center and explain you are not a
student but you are trying to find a referral they will help. Some community psychiatrists
do have some expertise in ADHD but they are harder to find. First step is you GP referral
In the US if you find a copy of Russell Barkley PhD latest publication you will find a list of ADHD clinics in his
recently published book
Getting the right help is the key
Good luck!
REPORT ABUSEFebruary 19, 2012 at 3:25 am #99834Wow – 7 months of Munchkin history in this thread! It’s been quite the journey. For those who don’t know, I did get good diagnosis, a referral to a psychiatrist, and have been on meds and learning more and more. I am relieved to have more of an answer to the struggles I’ve had all my life. I am pleased with the improvements I’m seeing, although I’m impatient for more progress. Sometimes I let my expectations get the better of me.
I’ve had some very rough times, and some extremely amazing successes and experiences in my 40 yrs on the planet. Kind of the whole rainbow…
I have so much gratitude for this site – in every way – the creators, the film, the videos, the humor, even the sharing of frustrations, and of course all of the wonderful people who have shared their experiences and touched my life on this forum. Much love to the people who were posting when I first joined the site, as well as the fabulous newcomers.
This is the place where we are accepted, and we know that it’s real, and none of that lazy, crazy, stupid stuff.

I feel a lil sad about No dopamine needing to leave, but I bet she took some n compassion with her. And left some of hers here, huh? In the future I bet they let us do private messages and start friendships. There’s totally safe and smart ways to let us do that. It’s a bummer when cool folks stop coming here. We shouldn’t feel stuck here because it’s the only way to keep in touch though…
