Frankly, I’m not surprised that a kid with ADHD would consume TWO 24-oz bottles of Mountain Dew all in one go. (Yeah, I know that Mountain Dew isn’t *technically* an energy drink.)
What *does* surprise me, is that the Toronto Star didn’t bother to check the facts and modify this American article for the Canadian market. While the U.S. version of Mountain Dew contains a huge amount of caffeine, the Mountain Dew sold in Canada is caffeine-free. This is because Health Canada regulations only permit cola-type soft drinks to contain caffeine.
Even so, I’d be very concerned if anyone—particularly a kid—were to consume that much sugar, glucose-fructose (high-fructose corn syrup), artificial flavour, and artificial colour, all in one go. Not to mention the effect that carbonated beverages have on tooth & bone density.

I’ve read that some doctors actually advise ADD patients to reduce their caffeine consumption as much as possible.
REPORT ABUSEJuly 22, 2011 at 5:24 am #104559I find that some energy drinks put me to sleep, coffee does as well, now my husband on the other hand, if he has a coffee he’s ready to kill some one!!
Also another think for people with ADD to say away from is cough suppressants. What suppresses the cough when you have a cold is a stimulant, so if your already taking one then it’s going to increase the effect of the one your already on……I found that out the hard way!!
I called the pharmacist that’s when she told me no dayquil/nightquil for me!!
