And I’m filing a grievance with the EEOC. I declared that I had ADD and they fired me anyway after telling me making any ‘reasonable accommodations’ would not make a difference. I am so upset at how I was treated that I filed with the EEOC today. I don’t want money or the terrible job back, I just want them to acknowledge what they did was wrong.

I learned my lesson–I will declare at my next job (hopefully soon) that I have ADD right away.

Am so sorry that you lost your job. Like I said in another post many private sector jobs are not adhd friendly because they only care about profit and see adhd or anything else as getting in the way. It’s horrible. Good luck with your next job. Hopefully, it’ll be right for you.

Sorry to read this as well. My telling my work I have ADD is (I think) the only reason I’m still here.

Them saying that reasonable accommodations wouldn’t make a difference. They have to make them and if it doesn’t work out then it has to be addressed another way. At least that’s my understanding anyway. The employer has to accommodate unless it would cause undue hardship, not if they don’t think it’d make a difference.

    Good luck.

This thread raises that age old question us ADDers have to face every time we apply for a new job…do you tell? What is the consensus? And dont say it depends on the job lol….YES or NO???

I say “no”, it’s none of their business UNLESS something at work is disrupting your being able to work and then they can make accomodations.

In the series of information seminars Dr. Jain gave at camH he stressed that the right job or career is critical to an ADDer’s happiness. ADDers have some incredible strengths, to go along with the areas we don’t cope so well with. As a result, some jobs are great for ADDers, and others are a very bad fit.

What line of work are you in? And if I may ask, what were your daily duties at the job you were fired from?

this just happened to me also… it stinks I told my employer about my add and they were not willing to make reasonable accommodations and they laid me off instead of firing me which was good for me. Good luck in your job search.

i lost job in november after only 4 months. my 3 month review went good. i told them before and after i was hired that i had add and i was only just diagnosed. one of the owners also has a social work degree. i figured that would be a great asset to me and to their business, thinking they could help me help them better.

this was the perfect job for me. i got along great with owners and i was doing what i enjoyed for the first time in 23yrs. so why or how could i screw this one up. i found a way like i always do. i always joke and say ‘if there is a way to mess up the unmessable, i will find it. hehehe, my track record still stands.

Hi caeserkat – sorry to hear about your job…

What kind of strategies are you using for your ADD so far?

It takes awhile to figure out what’s helpful for you as an individual, so hopefully now that you’re diagnosed and learning more about the condition, your track record will get better.

I am newly diagnosed ADD (last Nov) and starting a new job. Typically I come into a new position performing like a superstar and leave the job like damaged goods. 5 years is the longest for me at any one company. (25 years in the workforce). I get into trouble with administrative tasks (expense reports, etc.

This time I am going to try to use the insight gained and hopefully things will go better.

I am sorry for the job losses everyone has experienced.. .. been there

I have not told anyone about my diagnosis. Don’t think I would have been hired if I did.

I am so sorry you got fired. I don’t know how long you have been in the workplace or if this is your first time getting fired. It still hurts, and I am so sorry you are feeling it.

I have been in the workplace for 30 years. I have either been fired, laid off, or asked to leave every job I have ever had. for me it is just a matter of time. I was diagnosed with ADHD last year, and I told my workplace of the diagnosis. They elected not to renew my contract. I have told my current employer, and after 4 months and a terrible review with lots of “On the bright side, you have no where to go but up”, which I translate as “you have nowhere to go but OUT”. They put me on a PIP, which means its now a race to see if I can find my next former employer before this one fires me.

From what I have seen, It doesn’t much matter if you tell them or not. It only lets them put a name or a tag on every little screw-up.

I don’t think telling a boss about ADHD is a good idea.

This a always a big problem with us ADD losing jobs we cannot come out and say what we have we must hide always for fear of ignorance and obviously losing the job.

This is the complete utter failure of the Government I have emailed Dr. Helena Jaczek Liberal MP and never received one response, simply put Governments do not want to recognized ADD in the work place, they do not believe that we should be treated fairly, and not be afraid to come out.

If you read many sites the cost of ADD folks in high; unemployment, debt problems etc , now imagine if we are able to come out in the working world, and be protected. The benefits to all would be great, but our Government does not care and will not care, like Thomas doubting the wounds of Christ so does our Governments deny ADD.,

The sad thing there is countless proof of that ADD is real by top Universities in the World,

I appreciate the site but unless you have the means to see the specialist pay for your medication your just a soul out in the ocean by yourself

I have usually resigned before getting fired. I took the failure on myself just the same, though, with all the guilt and damage to self-esteem. I felt like a failure AND a quitter. I resigned from a job teaching high school English, then a job teaching middle school (thought it would be better, it was worse – what a fool I was) and a job at Books-a-Million after about two hours. (You mean I have to stand here and be quiet and just wait for people to come up and check out books? And I have to ask them to try a magazine subscription? Ugh. No. Gotta get outta HERE right now!) I believe (not officially diagnosed) I have ADD, and social anxiety (diagnosed). Also, under those circumstances, lol, a hefty does of depression.

Teaching was not the job for me. Right now, I’m waitressing. It allows me to run around in circles and expend energy, it’s relatively easy, and I can leave work at work. It’s a little stressful because I’m so forgetfull and get anxious, but it’s okay. I’d like to do something that better meets my intelligence level, but hopefully that will come down the line.

At work waitressing, I got my nickname, “Squirrel.”
