AnonymousInactiveAugust 15, 2011 at 6:01 amPost count: 14413I was diagnosed at 7 years old with ADHD (My initials are ADD with my married name too! =0)and I was on meds for years. I am now 21 years old, and my methods of “controlling” my ADHD are failing, I’m guessing my body chemistry changed or something. I used to have an energy drink when I wanted to focus, but now it”s being more than a focusing issue. I am having problems with motivation (housework, school, exercise) I am getting agitated easily….I almost threw my laptop the other day! I just want to be normal, and get the motivation to get everything done that needs to be done. What’s worse is my memory is starting to mess up. I can’t even tell you what I ate for breakfast! DO any of you have any suggestions? I may lose health insurance soon so I am looking for a way to “medicate” myself that will help.

AnonymousInactiveAugust 15, 2011 at 3:29 pmPost count: 14413I would recommend meeting with a professional prior to losing your insurance. Sure hope you don’t lose it. I know many folks who are very successful with behavior modification, lots of tools out there for this. You don’t necessarily have to join the military. I also recommend highly e benefit, ( short term and long term) to exercise. Doesn’t even have to be mega exercise, just go and walk for a bit, it always clears my head and calms me down. However, I often to fail to follow my own advise here. If it becomes a part of your routine, it has a long lasting effect. Try it, no medical insurance needed for this. Good luck.

AnonymousInactiveAugust 15, 2011 at 4:11 pmPost count: 14413@Alexial, I’m 37 and was diagnosed a few months ago. I don’t know if it gets worse with age or our lives just get more stressful and our coping mechanisms fail us. The best advice I can give you is to check in here regularly (but not tooo regularly). There are lots of great tips and suggestions for everything. I agree with lakelly that exercise helps–if only I could get motivated to do it.

AnonymousInactiveAugust 15, 2011 at 11:46 pmPost count: 14413Well, I am not very motivated right now, but in the past when I was feeling “crazy”, my therapist would always say” L, go out and start walking”. I always felt calmer upon my return. Not a solution for everything, but it works for a short time fix.

AnonymousInactiveAugust 16, 2011 at 4:10 amPost count: 14413the older you get, the more stuff to keep track of!!!! I’ve always coping really well with symptoms as well. until, i found myself only being able to do 6 hours worth of work in 11-12 hours with my first big high responsibility career job….my coping mechanism was to throw more time into everything which is no longer ok.

AnonymousInactiveAugust 26, 2011 at 8:55 pmPost count: 14413I have not been professionally diagnosed and doubt I will ever be. I don’t want meds and think I probably know more about ADD than my family doctor (I read a lot, often hyperfocus <I think I’m using the word right?> so I do a lot of reading on topics I’m interested in), but my sister-in-law HAS been diagnosed and she and I share a million ADD traits.
My big problem now, is that after I retired, and our kids moved out of the family home, I have both more time to collect things (mostly art materials and books), and more space to use. Our house used to look pretty presentable even with six kids, but now it’s a disaster zone, and it’s all my stuff. I feel overwhelmed by the task of sorting my stuff and all the decisions: deciding what to keep and what to give away (there is nothing to toss as I don’t store garbage, thank heavens!), and then trying to figure out how/where to store the stuff I keep. There’s been a pile of stuff in the living room for two or three months, and I keep promising myself I will put it away, but I think it’s getting bigger. I feel defeated and discouraged. On the bright side, when the co-op art gallery I belong to had a yard sale, I contributed about ten boxes of stuff.
How can I get the Stuff under control and get it organized. I HAVE stopped bringing new stuff in, pretty much.

AnonymousInactiveAugust 26, 2011 at 8:59 pmPost count: 14413Sounds just like me, Sugargremlin. When I was teaching, it took me twice as long to get done with the paper-grading, lesson prep, etc than it did anyone else. It really wore me out–I had no free time except a little on weekends. It was exhausting. I felt like I had to work twice as hard as everyone else to be half as good as they were.
