    Hi all,

I’m new here, just found out about it after seeing the show on TV… thank you to Mr. McKenna, Mr. Green, Dr. J, and the other specialists for bringing this site online! It looks like it may be a great help to a lot of people struggling with ADD like me.

My first question is, what do you suggest I do if I am self-employed and struggling to make ends meet in this difficult economy, and no insurance? I’ve been off meds for over a year now… I stopped taking them due to the costs and because Concerta seemed to loose its effect after taking it for a month or two. Looking back now, I should have kept trying different meds no matter what it cost… Mainly because i’ve really been messing up in my business, putting off things that are obvious needs (like accounting and taxes), and feeling overwhelmed with everything on my plate. Seems like my ADD has just got much worse… lately its been a complete nightmare trying to run my business… unorganized, procrastination, struggles with communication, etc., etc.

I’m so far in the hole these days financially that I can not easily afford some of the medications I’ve been on in the past (have taken both Strattera & Concerta), and would like to get professional help in finding the right meds. My past prescriptions were through regular MDs, not ADD experts, so I’ve always wondered if there’s better meds out there for me. Where would you suggest I start? Is there any services ADD specialists out there that don’t charge high prices?

    Regards,

    Jack

Not sure how much specialists charge out-of-pocket, it tends to vary by geographic area as well as other factors. If you have a local MD you trust, call their office and ask for a few recommendations, then call those specialists’ offices and ask what they charge out-of-pocket. There may be financial assistance available for uninsured patients, especially if they’re connected with a major hospital. Or they may let you pay the specialist’s fee in installments.

Strattera, Concerta, Vyvanse and other newer ADHD meds will cost more out of pocket than older generics like Ritalin or Dexadrin. If you want to try one of the newer name-brand meds, ask your doctor for samples. Pharma sales reps give out lots of samples to encourage doctors to prescribe their products. At my last checkup I asked my dr to prescribe a less expensive b.c. pill because mine were about to go from $24 to $69/month. She handed me a year’s supply for free!

As a business owner you know that sometimes you have to spend (or borrow) money to make money. We’re all feeling the pinch financially right now. But if you invest in your ability to function well, you’ll be better able to run both your business and your personal life. Best of luck!

I’m having great results with APO 20mg-SR, 4 times/day during the week, and 3 times on the weekend. 4x/day lasts ~16hrs, whereas 54mg concerta was wearing off after ~10hrs. Once I got the timing right (3-4hrs between dosing), I stopped getting the side-effects from the spike in levels (even Concerta spikes 6-7hrs after taking it & I’d feel chest pressure during that time).

The SR is a bit more expensive than IR, but still only 25c/pill.

I wonder if you’ve tried wellbutrin? budeprion is the generic, sorry I don’t know the price, but I take that with the generic ritalin. And I’ve been doing better

    Mostly.

I hope you find what you need. With some folks the meds are like magic, especially if you really study the info on this site, take a look at the video’s and the blogs by Rick n Dr. Jain.

When you have more time check out some of the longer threads like maybe the wellbutrin one. It’s totally worth the work if ya study the solutions to this. I bet you’ll do much better with your business if ya stick around here n study.

    Good luck.
