My rant….
I am self employed and stressed up to my eyeballs… suffering with insomnia (on sleeping pills which mostly works still have the odd night when they don’t) at the moment too mentioned the thoughts of having ADD or ADHD to the doctor due to never being able to focus on anything…. whether work or tv. I can’t even watch a 30 mins TV show with pausing it and going to check emails or talk to someone. I have tried relaxation mp3s and things like that but never finish them or my mind wonders whilst listening to them. It is really starting to affect my life now….. Do I have ADD or ADHD…. Also as I am on escitalopram 10mg to deal with my stressful life – not long term Doc says its a boost. I just feel so unorganised and can never complete anything…. I have tryed list writing never finish them and stuff…. HELP lol…. ok Im rambling now…

That’s the best I have…….see a Pro….and MD, do it right away. Get somebody in your corner who is trained and well versed in ADD and ADHD.

AnonymousInactiveOctober 1, 2011 at 7:00 amPost count: 14413I’m afraid my family doctor won’t take me seriously, as we’ve had some disagreements lately about another thing. Looks like I’ll have to go to Seattlle to find a specialist. I’m tempted to just go it alone, as I pretty much have EVERY symptom and my husband thinks I do, too. I’m still considering what to do.
I had a few symptoms as a child, but since I was a good student and didn’t cause any trouble in class, and because ADHD hadn’t been “invented yet,” it is only now, rather late in my life, that it is really causing me a lot of trouble. Before, my life was regimented by kids’ school schedules, my schooling schedule, and then my work schedule. I married early (20), had kids early, never lived alone, and I think circumstances masked my ADD. I think my mom has it, too.

AnonymousInactiveOctober 1, 2011 at 12:50 pmPost count: 14413I went to a different GP, rather than the one I have been seeing for years. I was put off my usual GP and decided to discuss my possible ADHD with a GP I had only seen once, for my daughter. I figured I would never have to go back there again if the doctor dismissed me rudely and told me I was silly for even thinking such a thing. I lucked out though, and found the new GP to be really really nice. ANd she believed me.
I actually did two online tests, and printed them out. I also got my husband to do one of the more in depth ones on my behalf (he marked the symptoms as never, rarely, sometimes, often, very often based on what HE had observed in me). It was interesting to see that his “testing” of me differed to my own (on the same test) slightly, as he sees me as more hyperactive than I thought I was (until he explained why, and then I could see it in myself), and he couldn’t complete the parts where the test asked about thoughts/feelings, but I still ended up in the category of “you should seek medical assistance, as you meet the criteria for adult ADHD” for both his test and mine. I think that having the opinion of a significant other is really valuable to a doctor, as it shows that others have noticed issues in your life and it’s not just your opinion by itself.
If you can search for a doctor who deals with ADHD, then do so before you do anything else. I found some through the local ADHD association, and have since found out that I can find an even bigger list of suitable doctors (psychiatrists) by phoning the association of psychiatrists or whatever the controlling body of psychiatrists is called. Though it might not be as useful to you, depending on your location – psychiatrists here have to be registered to (diagnose? and) prescribe for adult ADHD, so their governing/controlling body keeps a list of those who are registered.
