I have been off work for 8 months because of exhaustion. Everyday is generally the same pattern: I have some energy in the morning and feel fine then about 2-3 hours later there’s a deep fall in energy where I feel like a truck did hit me (like fighting a big cold). Usually, when I nap for 2 hours, it gets better and the pattern starts again. I’ve been diagnosed with ADD 5 months ago. I’ve tried Adderal, Concerta and Stratera with no sucess. I also tried antidepressants Pristiq and Cipralex with the ADD medication. My state remains the same … Can ADD be the reason of exhaustion even if I don’t work and only do basic life chores?

Have you had a sleep study done to check for sleep apnea or restless legs? Bloodwork to check B12 and Vitamin D and hemoglobin? Food allergy tests by the provocation/neutralization test? At different times in my adult life, I’ve had fatigue related to all of the above except B12 – but I know people for whom B12 has been an issue. Hope you and your doctors can find the answer(s) soon.

Have you had your Thyroid checked? Exhaustion is one of the symptoms of thyroid gland disorders. Have you done a blood glucose check (fasting test) for diabetes? How is your sleeping? Are you getting up frequently in the night or have an inconsistent sleep pattern?Just some ideas.

Wow! those are great questions to some I have answers. I’ve seen a naturopath who did allergy tests + blood tests. I practicly (sic) didnt have dairies and other stuffs. I’m taking vitamins B+D+Omega 3 and iodine and Magnesium&Calcium. I eat pretty well. Doctors say my thyroid is ok but natural therapists mentionned it was defective. I’ve checked my glucose with my Mom’s machine during our week vacation. I generally sleep all night and some insomnia once in a while. I also have a least one nap per day. My doctor prescribed me Wellbutrin. Its an antidepressant which could have effect on ADD. We’ll see … Managing all this is thought for a ADDer! LOL Thanks for discussing this with me.

When you think back to when you first noticed a change, what comes to mind? Can you link this exhaustion to anything that happened, such as a trip or a change in routine?

I really noticed it when I first burned out at 30 years old. I was dealing with a stressfull multi tasking job and got exhausted. I though it was because of accumulation of stress from previous work projects and that I was not good enough to cope.

WOW – can I ever relate! On weekends especially my days are such a waste. An hour or so after I get up, I can hardly stand it and have to take a nap. There’s days I simply waste. I think some of it is stress – and the inability to decide what to do next, so avoiding having to think so hard, I nap.

OTOH, did you know recent studies say that “multitasking” is a myth and is actually harmful? (I agree) Human’s can’t multitask – we time-slice, like a Windows based computer. (only mainframes can truly multitask, the PC slices time and shares the processor, but does it so quickly, it appears to be doing multiple things at once)

The studies show that multitasking, or more properly, constantly attempting to multitask actually cripples our ability to stay focused and study things in depth. I used to pride myself in accomplishing so many things, and if some of you recall, I’ve asked if ADD gets worse with age….. the comments were “probably not”, however, it seems that my constantly attempting to do so much at once has actually decreased my ability to concentrate and stay focused, adding to the ADD symptoms.

So tell the bosses to wake up, get a clue, and look at modern research. Multitasking exists only in the brains of corporate managers who want to push more productivity from their staff as lower costs.

It’s a myth, and a joke, and simply not possible for the majority of humans.

I am noticing a number of questions on sleep related problems lately. Start with this connection above because sleep = energy

My doctor prescribed Wellbutrin (an antidepressant) that should give me some energy. He also referred me to a sleep clinic to be tested. I don’t think I have narcolepsy but I definitly don’t have a repairing sleep. Also, when I exercise I get very tired to the point of feeling depressed. I also see a chinese medicine practitioner and he said it can be to exhausted adrenals. I’ll keep you posted. Thanks for all your comments and the discussion.
