I am a new to this forum, and recently diagnosed ADD. I am taking Vyvanse 30 mg and Prozac 20 mg. My question is how I can get myself to read book or do something constructive. All day I lay down on couch or watch TV even though I try to start something but could not, even I pick up a book to read or just pick up drawing board but do not start anything. I am not sure if I am making any sense. Please advise if anybody have any Idea. Thanks

@Heyadd reading can suck so bad, if you aren’t interested in what you are reading. I found that if I made up a character (minor) that it was easier to relate to the main character.(I did this a lot in school) I also create a sub story, if I cannot focus on just the story. My favorite type of genres to read are fantasy, cozy murder mysteries, thrillers, Thriller romance, and poetry. Some cozy murder mysteries even have recipes and other extra things. Sometimes, I will read graphic novels, but I do have trouble reading them with the bubbles.

Anther is audiobooks. You can find audiobooks and read a long with the text. Plus, you can listen to the audiobook as you are doing boring chores. Works like a charm.

I hope this helps. It works for me, but then again, I explain the making up characters, and sub story parts–people thinks I’m crazy. It works though. I can read a book in a day or in three months. I read at different speeds too.

Thanks laddybug3. I am sorry I was not clear. I am having a hard time starting any kind of work or hobby-reading or drawing, or even cleaning my apartment. My doc say I have depression and add and I am taking Vyvanse 30mg, and Prozac 20mg. these meds are helping but my issue is why I do not want to start normal chores I am looking for something which perk me up or motivate me and I start doing things like normal people. Or at least find out what is it that stops me.

Hey, when you start medication, you have an opportunity. The medication should give you a focus boost. You have to direct that focus boost to do the things you were unable to before. Getting some therapy from an ADHD specialist will help in doing this.

If you are not feeling able to do more than you were before, the medication may not be working for you.

Hello Hey – if the meds do nothing then maybe discuss changing to something else?

BUT on saying that, I find the meds I take are subtle in their effect but it has taken me months to get the dose right. I notice you say you are recently diagnosed so expect to have to adjust the dose or type of medication until you find what works.

I need to have the right mindset to some extent for them to work. What they do is to help me do what I should but I have to tell myself what I should be doing. I still have to try to motivate myself which isn’t always easy.

The trick is to start small. The temptation is to think the meds will make us into super-functional domestic and professional Goddesses (and Gods) but they don’t. But they do help us move forward to that goal to a greater or lesser extent.

So, back to the trick – start small and don’t expect sudden changes. You need to develop habits and that’s easier with the meds. So if for example you want to read a book, don’t think about the whole book. Just think you’ll read a paragraph. Do that every day until it’s a habit. Then read two paragraphs….and then a chapter etc.

So I believe it’s about developing habits and not doing too much at one go and then failing. Once something is a habit it’s easier to expand it without being overwhelmed or distracted (well…kind of anyway!).

Also, if you have a ‘to do’ list – just do one thing on that list. Don’t be overwhelmed. Treat yourself when you’ve done something good. Even if that’s just to feel some pride because you’ve done it. We’re usually so behind and stressed about stuff we forget to be pleased with an achievement because we’re stressing about some other undone task or late thing or other.

    Good luck!
