    Hi Don,

I’m also from Barrie. I noticed from your other post that you’re booked to see Dr. Bilkey. I was referred to him and got lucky as there were cancellations so I got through the assessment process fairly quickly in a few months time, although it’s on hold at the moment.

I found him really great to talk to, I really felt like he was the first person to completely understand what was going on for me. Sandra is very helpful too. I have been to see him three times now and I have one more appointment booked in the new year. He won’t release a final report until he has the results of a a sleep study he suggested, and as it turns out, my problem may not be ADHD at all as I’ve just been diagnosed with narcolepsy (sleep disorder). But he did say that I should have the sleep disorder (if any) treated first, and then he would treat any residual ADHD.

I don’t know of any Barrie support groups, but I do think this forum is really good and the members are extremely helpful.

The Centre for ADHD Awareness Canada (CADDAC) website is very informative, you might find it useful http://www.caddac.ca/cms/page.php?2

Here’s a link to their resources for parents with ADHD http://www.caddac.ca/cms/page.php?212

When do you see Dr B?

Hi I was looking at Dr. Bilkey’s web site. Is that sort of thing expensive? It does sound tempting.

It has been nearly 2 months of 300 Wellbutrin and 60 Straterra, no sign of change noticed by

either of us. It may well be that I need to engage in retraining my reactions to things .. gain

enough awareness that I dont melt down as readily. Evidently, no one on the Island has any

psychiatric training in ADHD other than the public health psych .. she is one of two for the

island so not easily available. Waffling about to find a next step .. thanks

    Hi Don,

That was my experience too, we both went to two appointments together.

Tea, the office visits are covered by OHIP (Ontario’s health insurance plan) but there is a fee on top of that for testing, which some here have complained about, as if it should all be free. I don’t have a problem with it. I have seen other people working in his office (not just receptionist) so I assume they are part of that expense. It’s not expensive if you measure it against having a better quality of life, the meds are probably what will cost more, but having a correct diagnosis and proper meds will make a world of difference.

You might look into someone in Vancover. The problem with any specialist is that they are hard to get to see, appointments are booked well forward, and they can change, so if you’re travelling a long distance, that can be very frustrating. I go as far as Toronto for some of my appointments, but we are used to going there every week anyways. Finding someone to tweak the diagnosis and help you work through meds sounds like it can be a long process. Worth it.

Hi no dopamine, thankyou. I may have to try Vancouver. I remember driving Toronto to Lake Simcoe in the summer, traffic jams. agg

Checked the BC health site, and they seem to cover some testing through their mental health unit, but not drugs like Straterra.

I seem to be adjusting to my wellbutrin/straterra meds, more anxiety and more stressed .. last exam said i have trouble with

Transitioning .. the startle effect kicks my anxiety up and I am near meltdown rather quickly over little stuff. So, need exam and

input on drugs .. I may give Dr. Bilky a call see if they know of anyone in Vancouver. thanks for the ideas ,, luck with the sleep

Tea, traffic is even worse now. It does sound like you need some input – hopefully you can get in to see someone. I suppose it’s a long ferry ride for you …

After just one visit I feel Dr Bilkey is worth every penney. He is an expert in hte field and spends time with you to diagnose you properly, so you can walk away feeling he has pin pointed your issues, he does not rush, and wants nothing but to help you be dianosed properly. Its only a thousand dollars for all the testing ect, i would pay way more than that if it helps me out and changes my life for me and my family. I will keep you guys posted if anyone is interested? so far one visit and I have more hope than ever. Im just lucky that he works in my area.

    thanks for the words

    Don

I agree completely, Don. I’m an accountant so I look at it “amortized” over the rest of my life, if I were buying a Starbucks fancy coffee every day for a year that’s the equivalent. The sleep doc I’m seeing now (thanks to Dr Bilkey for insisting on a sleep study) says he’s working towards giving me a better quality of life. “Worth every penny” is accurate, I would also have paid more based on my experience. Of course not everyone has the resources to do so, but for us that do, I’m so grateful to him.

He used to work out of Toronto and I have a friend whose partner saw him years ago, she speaks very highly of him.

Keep us posted on how you fare.

We just don’t go near malls, major intersections at this time of year. stopped giving gifts years ago, we just treat ourselves to something special (we don’t have childen). All the same, we are feeling a lot of stress just trying to drive around town.
