The more I see the banner above bringing attention to the test here on totallyadd.com, the more and more I seem to be having ‘issue’ with it. In a world rampant with misdiagnosis, particularly with ADD/ADHD, are we emphasising the acheivement of a “score” too much here?

I’ll wager that most of us are here for support and fellowship in what can be a very challenging and personally exposing circumstance. The thought that I’m looking to “see how (I) score!” in a test designed to evaluate the possibility/probability of having ADD or ADHD seems to me to be precursor to disappointment or misdirected revelation when the evaluation should come from a qualified professional.

I’m very thankful for this site, make no mistake. For some reason however, that banner keeps drawing my attention to it in a negative way…

It’s quite overwhelming to discover that you may have spent your whole life with a medical condition you never suspected you had, and which has affected you in so many ways. As has been pointed out in several Blogs and Videos, getting a proper diagnosis is critical, because, without it, you can’t seek proper treatment.

The tests here are based on the actual tests that are used by psychologists & psychiatrists to diagnose ADHD. They’re just a bit less overwhelming, because they’re designed for use by the potential patients, rather than doctors.

The banner pointing to the tests is important because so many people arrive here, unsure of what to do or how to find out if they might indeed have ADHD. Besides, if you do have it, you may not be able to find the tests without a clear banner leading to them.

I think the “see how you score” part and the little cartoon doctor are just ways of making the tests seem less threatening.

The tests here are intended to be a starting point. Something to take to your doctor to discuss. That way, you’ll have an answer when your doctor says, “What makes you think you might have ADHD?” Your doctor will then ask more questions, and send you to a specialist for proper diagnostic testing. They are not intended to be a substitute for professional medical advice.

and without such tests – how would one even know to get a professional check or not?

For me, it was another step on the path. I was also able to show some results……….. and told the doc I viewed it as a indicator that I should see if that was indeed the issue.

Larynxa said it pretty well. Frankly, I was very happy to see such aids, and this one was one of the most complete and honest. It also convinced me that I should stop putting it off! Otherwise, it might have been months longer, if ever. It was a bit of a push to “get the answer, you dummy”, instead of “well, should I see a doc or not”. This particular one was very nicely put together, and IMO, a WHOLE lot better than those DSM PDF files I find on the web. Being a visual learner, it was good for me to SEE and listen, and not just read – and some tests were a bit confusion – wasn’t sure what they meant, or under what conditions. This test was very specific, I was left with no question as to how to answer. The doc did a nice job, I think.
