Why/How do stimulants work to reduce irritability?

Dr. J:

I am puzzled by why stimulant medication (in my case, Concerta) works to reduce irritability. It seems counterintuitive (but I suppose that’s the whole thing behind how stimulants “calm” folks). I’ve inattentive ADD and was surprized how my irritability has improved with Concerta–although my DH and daughters may be less impressed:-).
