I was diagnosed toward the end of college and Adderall 20mg XR did wonders for me. Over the years, it did have less effect and so I got 5mg immediate release tabs for an afternoon “booster” to get through night classes. I think Adderall had been working well for me. Unfortunately, I got involved in substance abuse issues and was taken off the Adderall. Now that the substance abuse is well behind me, I’ve started treatment again. My doctor is hesitant to give me Adderall again because she’s afraid of a relapse (I was abusing meth). She started me on 37mg of Ritalin and it was awful! I would get moments of highs and lows, cold sweats, anxiety, it was a roller coaster! I stopped taking the Ritalin within a few days. She just put me on 30mg of Vyvanse and after the first two days, I can say it’s MUCH closer to what I remember Adderall XR doing for me. Granted, I last took Adderall about 2-3 years ago, so it’s hard to directly compare. But I feel that Vyvanse is giving me a much more consistent effect. I don’t get the ups and downs, and the dry mouth and anxiety are very minimal. Also, the Vyvanse seems to last for almost 8 hours amazingly (I made the mistake of taking it late afternoon yesterday and was up all night in a weird twilight state).  I think the Vyvanse will work just as well (for me) as the Adderall did, maybe better. I’m going to ask to be bumped up to a higher dose though, 50 or 70 maybe. I don’t think the 30 is producing enough effect to help me concentrate (it’s there, just too subtle to be useful). The kicker here is that Vyvanse doesn’t have generic yet and Adderall does, so the cost is higher :-/

I just started Vyvanese yesterday, I’m a male in my 30s, and I can say that I’ve noticed a slight irregularity when I’m peeing. It’s not so much that it’s hard to pee as that I feel as though I’m not fully emptying when I do pee, and I pee more frequently. It’s hard to say this is the drug though, as I’ve been having issues with frequent urination for years (I think my bladder shrunk as I became an adult or something, seriously, I joke with people that I have the bladder of a pregnant woman). Part of the issue with the med and peeing is that because of the dry mouth, I have to drink MORE water than I usually do, resulting in more bathroom trips. I just wish that I could hold my bladder a little longer, I got up 3 times last night to pee.

I was originally diagnosed with ADHD in my last few years of college. I was put on 20mg Adderall and it opened doors to me, I wish I had started the meds back in high school. I did actually lose about 20 pounds on Adderall. Sadly, I ran into substance abuse after college and was forced to stop treatment. Recently, with the substance issues long behind me, I’ve started on 30mg of Vyvanese and I’m hopeful, based on the first two days of appetite suppression, that I may be able to shed some of the weight I gained after stopping Adderall. I could stand to lose 10-20 pounds again and still be healthy. Here’s to hoping.

On a side note, I initially resumed treatment with Ritalin and it was awful, the ups and downs, the roller coaster and inconsistent effects each day. Vyvanese seems to be much closer to what I remember Adderall doing for me. The effects are subtle at 30mg though, so in 30 days I’m going to ask about going to 50 or 60 mg.
