I’ve heard people tell me that I should have sympathy for serial killers because they probably need medication or therapy or whatever. Then they turn around and say that adhd doesn’t exist and we should just pull ourselves up and I’m like hey wait a minute. So killing someone or raping someone is not a moral failing but a disease to be treated but ADHD is a moral failing that doesn’t exist as they like to say that we should just pay attention. So I have to kill someone to get sympathy? I can’t be a law abiding citizen that just wants to get some help with my work or school problems? I have to commit a crime to get societal help? That’s bullshit! Miguel

I would not use the word sympathy Miguel and perhaps i go out on a limb and say i would use compassion, I would never ever “push” for a death penalty but would indeed, remove the killer etc from harming others and treat as much as could be,the killers hatred of the world.

Is it peers who have said this to you? Or media? please could you expand a little Miguel :)

I “get it” Miguel. It’s insame isn’t it. I could go on, but my views are that of an east Texas redneck and far from being politically correct. Out here we say “let’s strap the SOB in old sparky and throw the switch on ’em.”

Well Peter. I’ve moved to the left with respect to the death penalty. I posted this to illustrate the hypocrisy of people who say they’re compassionate about serial killers but show a complete lack of compassion for people with ADHD who are for the most part law abiding. Miguel

Quote : I’ve heard people tell me that ……etc etc

Was it media or peer’s that have “told you”? Or is it just your perception! I personaly have never meet anyone that holds such view points, which is why I am asking for a little background, to such a sweeping statement Miguel.

In the US, the last 30 or 40 years have seen the rights of the criminal and the accused protected to the detriment of the victims and the general public. Things have gotten upside down to the point where I can be sued by the person who beat me up and robbed me and there are judges who will rule in favor of the criminal. I might even go to jail while the other guy goes free. It’s insane, but that’s the way it is. So like Miguel says, criminals are treated as victims of mental illness needing help, and getting it at the expense of the public, while law abiding citizens with ADHD are treated like they are lazy, crazy, or stupid and left to their own resources.

Lazy crazy and stupid seemed to be my middle names while growing up. I was successful I’m convincing myself (and others) that stupidity wasn’t part of the mix. The voices in my head assured me I wasn’t crazy. Didn’t have any luck at all on the lazy front until someone finally said “dude – I swear to God you must have ADD” after which I went through a battery of tests and finally was diagnosed.

Yet there are *still *people out there who insist ADHD doesn’t exist – thereby attempting to negate my entire life’s struggles. So I say “you must think I’m lazy or stupid, is that it?”. They back away, horrified that I took it that way. “oh no….no….”. So then I’m all like “SO I’M CRAZY???? Is *that* it?”. And we laugh, awkwardly.

*Sean Connery voice* And THAT my friend, is the ADHD way

Don’t feel bad. when I was first diagnosed adhd. I told my cousin and best friend and he laughed and said we all a little adhd, so after that I try keep my mouth closed. then when I told him that I had been told that I have three LDS and an unreliable memory he laughed again, I should have learned the first time. OH no it always seems to take me awhile. to learn these things, don’t ask me why? it just does.

Everybody Peter. Everybody. Media people around me. The world at large. And that’s not right. What kc5jck is completely right in his statement. Miguel

On the bright side – there has been a big shift in the scientific view of what ADHD is, and the existence of adult ADHD, and I think it may have a domino effect on how we see other mental illnesses and behavior problems accross the board.

It takes a very long time for the general public view to catch up with science.

If you go through the history of criminal justice systems around the world, I think you see a recurring theme of trying to balance the rights of victims against compassion for criminals who are themselves victims of child abuse, mental illnesses, and other circumstances. I think everyone loses out though if you wait until after the crime has been committed.

It would be so much better to invest money in more research and also treatment for anyone who needs it, regardless to their ability to pay. The cost to society of letting people fall through the cracks is horrible. You can see a lot of activism in this area – just check out http://www.nami.org to see what’s going on to change the situation.

That’s great but here in Canada we have nothing like that, our web sites our support is a complete utter joke,

I mean it’s great when you have a bunch of millionaires going on the ADD crusade they can afford the top treatment medication, but the average person has to suffer

munchikin you said it very well. as a matter of fact i had heard that many people in prison have adhd which is exacerbated by the environment of prison, which leads to violence. so if everyone had access to meds and therapy there the violence in prison could go down. not that everyone with adhd is violent but hey you wouldn’t think of depriving a diabetic of his insulin in prison so why deprive him of meds and therapy. if i said that alzeimer’s didn’t exist that’s just people getting old then i would be ignorant wouldn’t i? the same applies here. Miguel
