    http://www.csmonitor.com/Commentary/Opinion/2010/0819/ADHD-Has-this-diagnostic-fad-run-its-course

“The idea of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) as a credible diagnostic term has passed and it is time that we accept that and move on. Fads and disappointments are not new to the field of psychology nor is the need for people to get beyond them.”

This is, uh, oh gosh, a pretty damned negative article.

Note: the writer is an educator, not a doctor.

Oh my goodness. Stuff like this could set us back 20 years.

“Christian Science”… There’s 2 words meant to go together. i wouldn’t consider them a creditable source of much more then the current weather outside their window…

Write to the Christian Science Monitor and respond to this. Get facts to back your letter up and send it along. Don’t take this lying down. Speak out. This disorder is recognized by the AMA, the CMA, the American Society of Pediatrics and more. Get on this everyone.

Actually Shane, the paper has been one of the better ones through the years, and has always had a wide latitude of editorial independence. I agree with you, however, that Christian Science as a denomination has some terribly misguided beliefs/tenets that have led to tragedy often when people did not seek out medical treatment when it was clearly needed.

Lets not forget the World Health Organization and many Educational outfits too.

And what I was thinking of is the 2 words.. Christian and Science. It’s like “pleasurable disembowelment “… 2 word that just don’t belong. LOL

    But wait. There’s More!….

    http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/opinions/editorials/beware-of-jumping-to-adhd-conclusions/article1676407/

So, quickly, what time of the year was everyone born?

The Globe articles doesn’t discount ADD, but are suggesting that it is possible some diagnosis is made to early. Which may be as bad as diagnosing to late, I suppose. As I scanned through the articles and comments, there was no “ADD doesn’t exist” conclusions, but I can see how the Anti-ADD crowd will twist this argument to suit their evil purposes. I think we expect too much of kids at that age because we expect them to behave like adults at 5!

Repeat after me: “Hey, teacher, leave those kids alone….All in all your just another brick in the wall.””

It sounds similar the Christian-Scientist article, but with less rhetoric.

Ok, Rick. Just for http://www.totallyadd.com I wrote to them.

I’m pasting my reply here for anyone who wishes to use it or take from it for their responses. You can write to them here: http://ezorigin.csmonitor.com/About/Contact/Feedback/Comments-and-corrections

I saw no references regarding the research disproving the existence of ADD/ADHD. I, however, can list some resources for this academic scholar (an assistant professor of Educational Studies) NOT a LICENSED PHYSICIAN nor a LICENSED PSYCHOLOGIST that prove that it is a NEUROLOGICAL based disorder involving the Frontal Cortex of the brain. He can start with the American Medical Association (AMA), the Canadian Medical Association (CMA), the American Society of Pediatrics and more.

The fact that he is spreading information that stimulant medication used properly is dangerous when in fact it is safer than aspirin is fabrication. And, that this author linked phrenology (the pseudo science of scalp bump reading) and female hysteria (the Victorian Age ‘s excuse for pelvic massage-yes you read that right), is demeaning, disgusting and harmful.

In addition, it’s presence is not solely in “mis-behaving” hyperactive or daydreamy children. Your author conveniently and purposely left out the high number of adults who continue to evidence ADD/ADHD.

Please take this opportunity to have a physician or psychologist (by all means find a Christian one) to share helpful and enlightening information to your readers regarding the benefits and challenges that people with ADD/ADHD face daily.

    Thank you for your time,

    M. Marcel “

    Bravo! Very well said, MMarcel!

As an educator, it’s sad to think that there are still young, bright minds out there who may be subjected to teachers trained under such malarky. At institutions of higher learning, no less! What year is this supposed to be now?

Yes, a new school year and September are fast approaching. Do you know who is teaching YOUR child this year?

As I write this I’m trying to figure out how to finnagle (is that a word?) a trip to Winterpeg to attend the Annual Tourette Conference with our fine Mr. Green and THE Dr. Hallowell as presenters. What do you think?

I’m an educator with ADD, have a family member with TS/ADD, am from the Peg (family visit is WAY “Past Due” but I could combine it with this enjoyable educational experience- bonus!!) AND….I already know I my class is filled with ADDers, one with TS/ADD.

Now, what does my budget have to say about getting there?

Sorry, got a bit off track there. The article mentioned got me to thinking about teachers needing to keep their knowledge base up-to-date with ongoing training but that endeavour would be useless if ‘malarky’ was the basis of the course.

Not to hijack the thread any further, but they are going to be in the ‘peg for a conference? When? Any chance it’s open to the public?
