To give you a little background I am married (21 years) with one son 12 years old (diagnosed ADHD and exhibits many of the executive functioning qualities and I’m struggling with him.) I am a Speech Therapist that works in a south ga. school system -21 years. My husband lost his job five years ago and he now has a job with the gov’t but finances is not good. Oh and for the 20th year a tax extension will be filed because …the husband can’t follow through…..Anyway, I have been taking ADHD medication for the past year and a half. Had to change freq. because of side effects and insurance $$$. Currently I am taking Vyvance 50mg. I took it a year ago and it was much more effective year ago then it is now. I was previously taking Adderall XR 30mg. IT worked great, but I had what I called anger issues. Basically, I stayed angry/more resentful towards my husband. So I thought it would be best for the sake of my husband/ son and since I had different insurance to try Vyvanse again….The reason I made the appointment with the Psych. was to get my medicine regulated and I figured I probably needed something for anxiety /depression. I am diabetic and since my husband had lost his job, more stress, and more responsibility my A1C’s have not been good due to many distractions……. The Dr. asked a bunch of questions related to my family history and my childhood…. No questions related to my family /issues today. He did increase the Vyvance to 60mg and prescribed 25mg lamotrigine for rare or mild type of bi-polar. When I stated that mood swings and anger issues were characteristices of ADHD he agreed, but stated “there is a fine line”. What is the fine line? He did not want to prescribe anything that could be addictive because it runs in both sides of the family. I told him the only thing I was addicted to was food. Anyway, I agreed to see a therapist, but the Dr. was not a nice man and I have been a nervous wreck since the appointment. What now? Any suggestions?

    Hello Bianca,

It sounds like your story is pretty complicated and that you were under a lot of stress and reaching out for someone to listen. After all, “Who looks after you?” You are carrying the burden of the world on your shoulders. Sometimes doctors act this way purposefully to insight anger to see if you can spill other anger out. It is called transference. Then anger he provokes in you may be symbolic of other situations where you have felt misunderstood. In this case, trying to find the sources of your feelings is a good thing. It is always best to let doctors know how you feel and resolve the differences you have. If you can’t though, you can always make a complaint to the local licensing authority.

Ultimately, the solution is still making sure you don’t focus entirely on the meds but on the bigger picture. Check out the videos in the series called “Sponsored Videos” for a guide. That’s a first start.
