I can relate to everything in this thread so far, Thanks for sharing; sense finding this site my life is on the upward direction with ADHD, I am finding answers & positive direction that is AWSOME. I would like to share my most recent awesome experience. “I have always felt like a square peg trying to fit into a round hole” (not a comfortable feeling) After finding this site and some more information about ADHD. I realized, I am a square peg, I have 2 children that are square pegs and we don’t have to fit in to round holes. Why are we square pegs? My answer, That’s the way God made us, WHY? Because God loves wondrous variety. That for me is an awesome way to see myself & my children, and all others who are also square pegs.

@ADHDORNUTS – your nickname reminds me of a sign I saw on the Christmas buffet: Warning! This family contains nuts.

I agree – There’s room in this world for a few more square pegs!

    Everyone else is square ;-)

If I could just inject one in here. I always suspected I was ADHD. I was officially diagnosed last year at age 42. Now with more knowledge I see I’m actually a text book case.

So far the greatest feeling is when I realized I didn’t have to tell people I was dropped on my head as a baby anymore!

I finally had an explanation for my impulsive behavior. But now everyone needs to discuss it and ask questions. Nobody ever asked me about being dropped on my head? I guess it was more believable.

What’s awesome about ADHD? Well, I say that it would have to be that I’m my own personal entertainment unit! There is always some new thought or idea going on upstairs that keeps me from getting bored with life! Who needs a TV when we’ve got non-stop brains??

While the rest of the world runs on 110, we’re wired for 220, but plugged into 440.

    MORE POWER!

Let’s accept for a moment that finding car keys can be challenging, not to mention being on time for appointments and getting the paperwork done. So, even if we could do all those things, would anyone say, “How AWESOME!”? I don’t think so. I think ADHD’ers have the amazing potential of being AWESOME people, the game changers, the catalysts, the ones who can imagine a better world.

So yeah, we have to get through the day and do all the administrivia, but it’s a package deal. You get the negative AND the positive. If we focus only on the negative, then we get depressed and go nowhere. If we focus only on the positive, then we get labeled “dreamers”. It’s when we find realistic and disciplined ways of turning our ideas into reality that we can achieve epic awesomeness.

What is AWESOME about my ADHD? I don’t know yet. What gives me that AWESOME feeling? Looking at something at the grocery store and “tasting” a new dish creation. I’m not talking what’s for supper. I’m talking about seeing two things and putting them together in a new and different way to create something delicious. Like an herb stuffed lamb chop w/ citrus roasted baby potatoes and a nice sunny tomato, basil & balsamic salad… yeah, that’s an old one… but that Alleluia moment when everything comes together in my mind’s eye… erm… my mind’s mouth? lol Yeah… that’s AWESOME.

Or figuring out how to make a delicious and intricate dessert that will have people scratching their heads in wonderment of how I did it, but knowing the answer is so simple… Yeah… that’s AWESOME.

Or finding that accounting error. Yeah… that’s AWESOME.

We all tend focus on the negative things about ADHD, but our abilities can be considered superhuman. I’m sure most of these apply to all.

My IQ is in the genius range. When i’m learning my way(not school), there is NOTHING I can’t understand. I’v read or skimmed books on quantum mechanics/theory: parallel universes the search for other worlds, quantum reality(fun book about the true nature of reality), hyperspace, and from big bangs to black holes, to name a few. I’m a big discovery and history channel fan. I know a lot about everything: biology, psychology, sociology, art, physics, biology, bio-chemistry, cosmology, astronomy, etc. It’s that whole, “I get bored easy.”, that we all share.

Hyper-awareness of the environment. Good luck sneaking up on me, not going to happen. Handy in some areas.

Hyperactivity, I burn through calories like a race horse. I’v rarely had problems with weight.

Hyper-enjoyment of food. I’m much more sensitive then most. Who needs drugs when you have this.

Hyper-creativity, writing with full developed characters and story is effortless. It flows like a river. I just write down the movie playing in my head.

Being spontaneous and less inhibited, “People can’t figure you out.”, sucks being as dull and boring as you. I’ll take more chances, do crazy things, and have more fun in life than you ever will. :)

I just had one of those “Awesome” thoughts, that make me grateful for my ADHD brain.

I received a “please vote for me in this contest” request, on Facebook. The request contained a link to the contest, which is called “Start Something With Alesse”.

And what instantly popped into my head?

Alesse is a birth control pill. Shouldn’t that contest be called “STOP Something With Alesse”?

    What makes me feel AWESOME:

    1) Learning aobut stuff. About almost anything! My favorite words are still how, why, and what. I like to learn how things work, what makes them tick…this can be anything from my own brian (so COOL!!) to semi trucks, to insurance (seriously, insurance is confusing!)

    2) Learning new skills. In the past 12 months I have learned many new games (card, video,RPG, and board) have learned to paint pewter miniatures, and my new favorite, how to knit!! I love being able to say, Hey, I know how to do that!

When I’m allowed to learn my way at my pace, I am unstoppable, I have an insatiable thirst for knowledge.

I love looking at all the stuff I have learned in 27 years. Even when the ADD is bad, and has me down, I can look at my mind and go ‘Look at all this cool stuff I know!!!”

Also, animals. Animals are awesome. They don’t care about ADD, they love you no matter what. Even if you interrrupt them, or talk about knitting and WWII history too much, they snuggle right up and keep loving you. My 2 cats and 2 rats make my day every day.

I’m not sure this is worthy of commenting. I’m the guy that joked (above) about finally having an explanation. :)

Reading other comments I think it’s great so many find positives. I share a lot of the insights and felt that way even before being diagnosed. Like others I could be considered as high functioning. Only I’ve never seen myself special because others couldn’t see it.

However with my ADHD. I have an impulsive habit or need of “splitting the story”. I “have” to see both sides of the coin to feel remotely satisfied I understood. I pick things up to look underneath. My own keyboard countless time a day even. I have two answers for every question. Drives others nuts when I want to see what the cat’s after under the couch!

But still the greatest thing for me now is “knowing” that I am running on a different wavelength. I’ve been able to let go of things like anger now knowing that the others in my life simply couldn’t understand. How could they? I was always five steps ahead wondering what’s taking them so long. People kept telling me things that I “just” thought of 10 seconds ago! I would get annoyed waiting for others to see my idea while some one else gets the credit because they explained it better. Like so many others like us I spent my life being denied my smarts because I was on a different wavelength or described something with the wrong word.

Like any other ADHD’r I’ll bring us back around to the point. Which is: “The explanation led to further understanding” of people around me and I now try to slow down. I can enjoy the circus tunes in my head while others speak. I can take in more without the irritation of waiting for others to see the punch line of my joke…. . Most importantly I don’t get angry anymore…. That’s great! To me anyway?

@Hayes – I couldn’t have said it any better myself, particularly the part about slowing down so people around me can understand.
