Hi – wise words lurknessmonster – thanks. Reading itself isn’t an issue but concentrating on what I read certainly is. I guess it’s all too complicated as you say. I think you made a good point about the subtle effects things like tyrosine might have. I don’t need subtle effects, I need something that’s going to explode in my brain and shake me into focusing, concentrating and not procrastinating any more. Subtle won’t do it. :-)

Hi guys – doing back to self-medication….. has anyone tried taking tyrosine and phenylalanine supplements. I read somewhere that these amino acids are precursors of dopamine and can help. Has anyone tried the natural approach or these in particular and if so, what was your experience? Thanks.

I just love this site – I have never met so many people before that I can relate to. Do you think it’s all down to ADD or do other people do this stuff too? I hate grocery shopping so much I wait until 20 minutes before the shop shuts. Then I rush in, grab what I can and get out again quick. By leaving it late I don’t have to fight against the crowds and I can get several days supplies in 10 minutes (if I’m not too fussy!). It goes wrong when they rearrange the shelves though.

The lady who cleans the building I work in found my ID card in the wash-room – I don’t even remember going in there! No doubt it’ll take me ages to put everything away in my house that I ripped out of place last night when I was looking for it (not that anything was in place really but I like to pretend).

    Hey Lanakila000,

Don’t say it sucks being you…it’s just sometimes the situations we get into suck. At least that’s how I try to look at it – at least I do when I am being positive anyway. The number of times I put off filling up the tank because I’m running late to get home and OF COURSE there will be time tomorrow (because I’m going to get up early (or at least on time)) and OF COURSE there isn’t time (because I couldn’t get out of bed) so that means I am late in the morning too…..but I have to fill up so am even later…. Yep……it sucks and somehow never changes.

I spent tonight looking for my ID badge to get into my office tomorrow. I still haven’t found it – I have such a careful routine with it too. Aaahaha. So tonight I won’t sleep because I’ll be thinking about where I put it. Ah well……. and on it goes…… ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

Hi KrazyKat – thanks. I see the logic there. I’ll try that. I think being overwhelmed is a big thing in all this.

Billd, I laughed at your post – my other vice (like I don’t have more than two – yeah right!!) is I don’t finish stuff once I have started. Some things I start with great enthusiasm – like doing up my house. But instead of finishing one job in the house I got bored and started another. The result is a completely wrecked house……it’ll get done one day. My mistake was buying a sledge-hammer! The one good thing is my neighbors think I am crazy so they don’t hassle me anymore.

Hey guys….two hours on and I’m actually doing what I’m meant to be doing…..OK yeah I have stopped for a moment. BUT I’m breaking it down into chunks and it’s actually working. OK I’m now hyper on Red Bull but basically I think I am cracking on because I told you all earlier that I couldn’t get started. Yay…this site is great. Where else could I admit this stuff and find people who can understand. THANKS you guys!

    Off for another RB.

    Hi oh-look-a-squirrel,

I feel your pain. Unfortunately I don’t have any advice but I can empathize. I can only get going when the consequences become more scary than the thought of doing the task. I’ve tried the ‘breaking it into small chunks’ routine but it doesn’t work for me. It does if it is something like housework, but if it’s ‘work-work-related’ then small chunks don’t work because I forget what I’m doing. At least I don’t forget what I am doing, but I forget all the reports/paperwork I have read to get me to the end point so I need to get into the zone and stay there until it’s done or I am constantly repeating stuff. That means I put it off. So today I got up early because I have something to get done for tomorrow. I felt very positive about doing the task but so far I have emailed folk, surfed the web, drank 2 strong coffees and 2 Red Bulls in quick succession and now have a headache. It’s now 6 hours since I thought I’d start the task and haven’t. It’s just c***!!!! Maybe I’ll have a nap and start again…………………. :D

Yes I know what you mean about the emergent planner. I am using the task tracker today, or am trying to, but have spent the day trouble-shooting so mabe I can actually put it to use tomorrrow. I don’t graph my sleep patterns – that’s pretty efficient of you. I had to pull an all-nighter the night before last to get something done so last night was great as I was out like a light and slept well.

Hi no_dopamine – thanks for this – I like the idea of bubble filling. I’ll give it a go. I think I’ll be more likely to stick to task with this if I can see the bubbles being filled in. The emergent task planner looks more daunting but it’s cleverly laid out.

Hi sugargremlin – thanks for the hint about scheduling tiny chunks. I was trying an hour at a time but that fails ๐Ÿ˜† so I think you’ve hit the nail on the head about ‘tiny’ chunks. Off to set my alarm right now. :-)

I have to work from home, with black-out blinds on the window and a fan to create ‘white noise’. I have to use an old computer that’s too rubbish to be able to access the internet for written stuff. I try to do the internet side of work towards the end of the day because once I log on with my regular computer I can kiss goodbye to any productive work because it’s a huge distraction. Also, I get more done when I am really tired – I think having to concentrate over tiredness is good for me but that’s probably because my brain doesn’t whir so much then. Also, I usually have a deadline with consequences when I get to that stage so it’s an all-nighter situation. Problem is it takes longer to recover now I’m getting older! Recently I have been trying to go to bed earlier and get up earlier. I find if I roll out of bed have a coffee and hit work (at home!) for the morning, then shower and go into the office for meetings and mundane stuff it works quite well. I am lucky in my job that I can do that sometimes. I walk past my colleagues’ offices and they all look SO focussed and busy. If you look in my office I’ll be playing with a yoyo and staring at the note on my desk that’s reminding me what I am meant to be doing. I envy my colleagues but I just don’t ‘get’ how they can concentrate. There must be a video sketch for ‘Mr Rick’ in there somewhere!
