This is a year old but yeah, I hate it too.

I found what made it worse was how sensitive your gums get if you don’t do it regularly. That actually was enough to motivate me to change. If I at least floss before bed every night, I never get sore gums.

For those still trying to motivate themselves, it may interest you to know that gum disease can cause serious health problems as the bacteria in your mouth travels in your bloodstream to other areas of your body.

One last thing: I have a tendency to brush too hard and not long enough. Brushing is boring! My dentist said it would start damaging my teeth if I kept doing it, and brushing for a very short time barely does anything. Be gentle and try to reach 2 full minutes.

I linked this video in another thread but I think both of you will find it very interesting:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q3d1SwUXMc0

15 minutes into the lecture he talks about the difference between ADHD and ADHD combined with ODD. In short, it’s a very bad combination and 1 in 5 children with both will in fact be clinically psychopathic.

45 minutes in, he talks about ADHD, heritability and genetics in a good amount of detail.

I hope you find it helpful!

There will always be people who prefer to pathologize any behaviour they don’t like. It’s a tool of manipulation, whether they realize it or not.

I hate to stereotype…but how old is your psychiatrist? The first psychiatrist I saw was in her mid 70s and just about to retire. My mother happens to be bi-polar and that’s all she needed to hear. Immediately she was convinced I was bi-polar despite my complete lack of manic episodes (I was mildly depressed…because having untreated ADHD for years is indeed depressing!).

I knew in my gut that she was wrong though I didn’t yet know about ADHD. I had a very thorough psychological evaluation including looking at my childhood history which even dug up a test I took as a child that showed markers of ADHD. I then was referred to a psychiatrist, who independently confirmed the diagnosis. Both pretty much called me an open and shut case (politely).

I asked about your psychiatrist’s age because the older they are, the more likely it is they don’t even believe that ADHD can persist into adulthood.

Actually, it’s not just some research that says it is genetic. It is 100% definitely genetic. This whole lecture is very good but skip to 45 minutes in if you just want to start at the bit about genes.

If you don’t have time to watch, essentially it’s clear that ADHD is even more strongly genetically determined than height!

I just wanted to reply and let you guys know I got in with one of the psychiatrists! He did not charge me a fee over OHIP and once I became a patient he was very prompt about booking an appointment the next week. I don’t know if I’m allowed to post his information but if anyone in the GTA is still trying to find a psychiatrist that treats adult ADHD you can P.M. me and I’ll pass on his info. It wouldn’t hurt to try getting your family doctor to refer you to him.

PS: I just came across Dr. J’s earlier post about new doctors graduating in July. That’s not so far away if I have no luck elsewhere. =)

Foogol, do you mean the psychiatry department?

I’m not sure what I can do aside from wait for one of the psychiatrists I was referred to. If neither get back to me within a few months I might try explaining my situation to the one I have yet to be referred to and hope that they’ll waive making me do another assessment.

Given my package of information from the psychological report, I see no reason why any doctor would need to do anything beyond using the free CADDRA assessment package if they wanted to re-diagnose me.

My family doctor also gave me an EKG that seems to have come back normal (I wasn’t given a report but I’ve been told they usually tell you there and then if there are any abnormalities). So that’s out of the way.

Thanks, Foogol. Unfortunately the majority of those links for the Toronto area are for treatment for children and adolescents.
