Dr. J, some years back you told your lecture group that the WHO recognized ADHD has one of the top three mental illnesses affecting adults worldwide. Do you have a link to that reference?

Never mind that I don’t know anybody with ADHD who does not ALSO have depression, or the number of ADD’ers who self-medicate with cocaine and other street drugs. CAMH has a real opportunity to make a difference here!

Actually a lot of folks who qualify for ODSP do not qualify for the federal tax credit.

My own application was approved in 17 days, which is unheard of. So either Dr. J. completed the forms REALLY well or I am REALLY messed up. Or all of the above.

Because he didn’t believe they would approve my son anyway he wasn’t nearly as helpful with Brendan’s application, but I got copies of a number of reports from his CAMH chart which I submitted as supporting documents to demonstrate how long this has been interfering with his life.

At least now ODSP has cleaned up their act so claims are processed within 90 days. Don’t know what’s going to happen if we have to appeal as we are losing our specialist thanks to the idiots running CAMH.

Great news DulcisMinutiae. Are you in Toronto as I need a new specialist myself.

@Roberacer – it’s too bad your parents weren’t given better information. It sounds like you were just given too high of a dose! A lot of ADD’ers self-medicate with cocaine. I’d be really interested to see a study to determine how many coke addicts have ADHD.

(as an aside, I have many friends who are accomplished jazz musicians and at least one of them is looking for somebody to help book a tour – not sure how to contact you directly to network??? you could reach me at buxom.diva@gmail.com)

Everybody reacts differently to medication of course, but I remember hearing Dr. J say that anybody who had previously taken a stimulant medication will probably NOT find Stratrera effective since it is not a stimulant. So the negative reports you’ve heard might have been from folks who had previously tried something else?

well SighKoh your cat DOES own you! haven’t you heard; dogs have owners, cats have support staff.

I can SO relate to this issue. Over the years I’ve been saved from my own hoarding a couple of times by having a flood ruin a bunch of stuff, or having stuff somehow get left behind moving from Point A to Point B.

I have a dear friend (a fellow patient of Dr. J) who insists that he is not a hoarder, he is a collector. I tried to tell him that ten years worth of a computer magazine still in the plastic it was mailed in is NOT a collection! Stamps, coins, baseball cards, records, maybe but NOT a magazine nobody else would ever buy from him!

@Wolfshades – the head vs heart thing is not about extrovert vs introvert as I recall – it’s about whether you are motivated by impulse or compulsion isn’t it?

This might be helpful – there are other posts about other meds as well. Seems he started you on a very high dosage; no wonder you couldn’t sleep!

All my friends with ADD have trouble making decisions as well; I can take 20 minutes to choose toilet paper!

It sounds like there might be other stuff going on about communicating with your husband though. Are you afraid to communicate your opinion because along the line somewhere you got a message that your opinion doesn’t count? Almost everybody I know just got the diagnosis as an adult and we carry a LOT of wounds from our childhood.

Hope you get it sorted out.

I would have to agree that it’s a differential diagnosis thing. I believe he asked my mother if there had been any complications with my birth, and asked me about my son’s as well. There’s a note in my son’s chart that he was born with the cord around his neck :-(
