be careful of third party agencies like the one in that link! in another thread Dr. J. mentions that many people with legitimate claims for ODSP are being denied as third party companies are submitting many claims to try and get money out of people who are intimidated by the process of applying for these government benefits

What you’ve described sounds to me like the fatigue that comes with depression. Lots of us who spent our “formative years” being told we weren’t living up to our potential are depressed; no big surprise actually.

Hope you get an accurate diagnosis and find a medication regimen that works for you.

Somebody told me recently that having “too many” pets is an indicator of childhood sexual trauma. Is that something you would agree with Dr. J.?

Larynxa, don’t hold back let us know how you really feel!

For the record, most private insurance policies only cover generic drugs too; I worked in benefits administration for many years.

I can’t remember now what I read about how drug prices in Ontario compare to the rest of the country, but at the time I thought the whole thing was a tempest in a teapot.

I just hate that there’s now a generic version of Topamax, cause as soon as that happened the original drug company cut off their compassionate usage program. :-(

Roachella – bottom line is that we find ways to adapt to make ourselves appear more “normal” so we can get dates once we hit puberty! At least that seems to be the consensus amongst all my ADD’er friends. I see some of that adaptivity going on in my son as well, who is now 20.

I know a lot of folks living with ASD and they run the spectrum in the looks department, just like neuro-typical folks.

I once had a colleague think I was nuts when I mentioned that babies born by Caesarian are cuter; apparently she didn’t understand that I meant only for the first few weeks of life, when babies delivered the old-fashioned way have that cone-head thing happening.

I do remember hearing from a reliable source that many of us with ADD have a pinky finger that curves in. That’s the only physical trait I’ve ever heard of.

I’m looking for a new specialist myself MerryMac. The only one I know of, other than Dr. J., is Attila Turgay and I don’t know if he’s taking new patients.

Michael, is that doctor in Barrie by any chance? I’ve heard horror stories of how much people are paying for comprehensive testing just to get a diagnosis. It’s obscene the way some physicians bilk those in need.

I’m trying to get the Empowerment Council to tackle this issue but it turns out that I have to go through “regular channels” which means going to the person who handles patient complaints.

If anybody else is interested in kvetching about Dr. J. having to give up all his adult patients, the first contact we have to go through is Joan Lewis.

When that yields no result, then I can push for the E.C. to do their “systemic advocacy” thing.

One of the things my doctor did NOT warn me about is that I woke up one day with the libido of a teenaged boy. I’m still trying to find him to give it back!

You know that whole impulsivity thing a lot of us have to contend with on a good day? You have NO idea how close I have come to just jumping a certain local musician who is drop dead gorgeous…

and a year younger than my firstborn!

    ~sigh~

I think you should report him to the College of Physicians and Surgeons. That was VERY unprofessional, imho.

Actually Abby, at one time ADHD was called Minimal Brain Dysfunction in the DSM – something like that anyway – the labels they stick on these conditions change from time to time.

Sorry you had such a painful childhood. I was stuck in gifted classes with undiagnosed and untreated ADHD so school was not a picnic for me either.

Do you have kids of your own yet? Seems we do pass it on to them; my younger son’s ADHD is very different from mine but it defintely impacts his life quite strongly.

I love this thread! When I took my son to a doctor at Sick Kids many years ago, the shrink he saw there informed me that there was nothing wrong with Brendan that wouldn’t be fixed if I were a better parent and gave him more structure. Really helpful eh?

    @JayBird – I like your mom!

When I took part in an afternoon of recovery stories a few years ago, I said that the usual reaction from people when I tell them I have ADD is to suggest that there’s nothing really wrong with me and I should just try harder. I actually started working on a book called “But I am trying harder!”. It only took me about two years to finish the first page, then lost it to a computer crash. ~sigh~

@Dogfather – I’ve been told that it’s becoming increasingly common for ADD’ers to also be diagnosed with bipolar disorder – like me and my good friend Robin Williams.

I haven’t had much luck finding any documentation on the difference between being hyperactive and being hypomanic – for me it’s the difference between having racing thoughts and having physical energy to burn – but if this is the first time you’ve experienced something like this I can’t help wondering if perhaps it was a mild manic episode?

Might be worth checking out? Just a thought. Good luck! (and I freely admit to playing Tetris until my hands went numb before I knew anything about this ADD stuff lol)
