Scattybird, ‘noob’ is internet shorthand for ‘newbie,’

ie, someone who is new to all of this.  I don’t know where or when  it started, but I’ve been hearing ‘newbie’ for at least 20 years, and I’ve been seeing ‘noob’ on internet forums since I started cruising the web 14 years ago.

If I had to make a guess, it probably got started in online video gaming, ’cause that’s where a whole lot of internet slang seems to come from.

    >> I’m seriously thinking of writing a ‘Tell All’ about my history of being bullied, including names, and publishing it in the local paper. One of the kids (now an adult) is the son of a well known doctor where I live.<<

Mr. Harrington, I MUST ask this question, so please, understand, I am NOT criticizing you:     Does your desire to write a “Tell All” stem from a desire for payback, or a need for justice?  If it is the former, then I urge you to let it go; as I have learned much to my own grief, a desire for vengeance only gives your persecutors continued power over you.

Justice, on the other hand, redresses grievance with a measured response, and restores balance.  I would suggest trying to determine if this sort of behavior is still going on.  If it is, then write your tell-all.  If not, don’t give those @$$holes that power over you.  Move on, forget about them, and pursue your own happiness.

    >>So I wondered if maybe I would be more time aware if I had one now. So I immediately took my phone and sent myself an email to buy a watch.<<

ROFLMAO Yep, sounds about like me LOL

My wife has long been lamenting the fact that, when I do laundry, I never seem to wash any of her or our daughter’s clothes.  Not from any intentional discourtesy, mind you, just because either A) I’m grabbing what’s on the floor in the hallway (we have far, FAR too many clothes for any hamper to hold), or B) I get hyperfocused on getting my work clothes washed and it never occurs to me that my wife might need hers washed, too.

So, after the latest in a series of arguments over this, I taped a big note to the dryer door to remind myself to wash other clothes, too.  At 3 in the morning LOL

    Hey, Guys and Gals!

I know we all have ADD/ADHD here, but this is an awesome thread!  Are we really gonna let it die off like this?  C’mon, Hijack it!  Let’s keep it going!  Here’s my contribution:

Back in August, I got a new family doc.  After we got everything transferred over and had our initial appointments, I went back for my first follow up and made an incredible discovery:  For only the second time in my entire 37 years of life, here was finally a doc that listened!  She prescribed Concerta and suggested a psych visit for a thorough evaluation (you all know the drill).

Well, I tried to fill the Concerta, and Michigan’s medicaid-blue cross complete wasn’t having it, so I went on Strattera.  After two weeks of chills, sweats, difficulty urinating, irritability, and, horrifically, some rather painful sexual effects, still no improvement.  During the interim, I had learned that straight medicaid will pay for ADD drugs that blue cross complete won’t, so now round two of waiting for prior authorization on Concerta.

Wow, didn’t mean to write a novel, just tryin’ to hijack the thread LOL

Yeah, definitely.  He seems to understand it better than my wife does (go figure).  I have one other friend who definitely understands, because he has ADD too, but I don’t get to talk to him much, unfortunately.

    Socks are @$$holes LOL

    I love it!

Yeah, I have trouble keeping track of socks, too.  And undies.  I must have like 20 pairs of boxers lying around this house, but I’ll be damned if I can ever find more than like 6.  They must all be hanging out in the back of the closet, partying with the 6,000 or so socks I’ve lost LOL

Incidentally, Tasslehoff personifies my ADD, while the others represent the things I’m interested in, except Retread.  He’s just there for fun LOL

    >>Except for the bit about Tasslehoff. My favourite character. Though I didn’t really care for that series much,  the Kender were amusing.<<

It’s the pinball bouncing around in my head LOL

Tas was a great character, but I always liked Tanis, myself.  Did you read any of the other books in the setting, like The Legend of Huma?

Ender’s game totally rocked, along with all the other books in the series, and the Bean books.  I like Card’s work.

Vonnegut wrote Slaughterhouse Five.  Good book.  Give it a try.

Gunner:  No, seriously!  Here, try it. (hands 9mm pistol to The Swordsman)  See that stopsign down there at the end of the block (points)?  That’s just about 40 yards.  See if you can hit it.

Swordsman:  Umm..you DO know that I’m interested in ALL kinds of medieval weaponry, right?  Like CROSSBOWS?  (Snaps off a perfectly aimed shot, knocking a neat hole in the “O” in STOP)  Marksmanship is marksmanship, regardless of the weapon.

Rat:  Are you guys STILL arguing  about that?  Jeez, and I thought I needed to get a life!  C’mon, hijacking the thread, remember?

Chief (shaking his head): Forget about it, son–those two’ll keep arguing until the cows come home.  Just ignore ’em.

Tasslehoff:  Wait–you have cows?  Why haven’t I ever seen ’em?  Where do keep ’em? (fidgets in one of his pouches, producing Gunner’s pistol) Hey, where’d THIS come from?

Jedi (shouting): EVERYONE DOWN! (Jedi executes a Krav Maga gun defense technique, neatly disarming Tasslehoff)  Tas, pay close attention now:  WE DON’T PLAY WITH GUNS.

Gunner:  HEY!  THAT’S MINE!  You little THIEF!

Tasslehoff:  Hey, I FOUND that!  You must have dropped it!

The Dark Stranger (creepy voice):  Let the little one enjoy his find, Sir Knight.  It could prove amusing.

    Everyone Else:  HELL NO!

Jedi (removes the magazine from the pistol and ejects the round in the chamber before passing it back to gunner):  Here, put this someplace safe, preferably welded into a strongbox so the kender can’t get it.

Gunner (locks and loads before returning the weapon to his shoulder holster):  Thanks.  (Turning to Tasslehoff)  If I EVER catch you even so much as THINKING about touching one of my weapons again, I’ll break all ten of your thieving little fingers!

Tasslehoff (indignantly):  Why, you stuck up, half-witted, scruffy-looking, GOBLIN LOVER! I’ve never stolen anything in my LIFE, you brainless son of a WHORE!

Gunner:  THAT’S IT! (Lunges at Tasslehoff as Jedi, The Swordsman, Retread, Rat, and about a dozen others restrain the two)

Rat:  All RIGHT!  THAT’S ENOUGH!  Back to hijacking the thread!

    And so it goes….  😉

Rat:  Hey, I’m gonna hijack the hell out of this thread!  This’ll be awesome!  Let’s see…what can I write about?

Gunner:  Guns.  Or explosives.  Either one’s cool.

Chief:  Hey, stow that crazy there, Sailor; you know the NSA’s been spying on everyone’s cellphones and email.

Gunner:  So?  Just ’cause I enjoy target shooting doesn’t make me a criminal…

The Swordsman:  Eh, guns are for the unskilled and the lazy.

Gunner:  Grrrrr…(Scottish accent, like Mr. Scott on Star Trek) Don’t ya think ya should be rephrasin’ that, Laddie?

The Swordsman:  Simple:  anybody can get lucky with a gun; a blade takes true skill.

    Re-Tread:  I like cats!

Chief:  Wha–Where did that come from?

Re-Tread:  You were arguing.  Arguing makes me sad.  But cats make me happy!

(Collective Groan) Gunner:  Shut up, Re-Tread

Jedi:  A blade is a work of art in and of itself, not as clumsy or random as a blaster; a more elegant weapon from a more civilized age.

Rat:  Hey!  Guys!  We’re supposed to be hijacking this thread, remember?

Gunner (dismissively):  Yeah, yeah, just a minute.  No skill, huh?  Ever tried hitting a man-sized target at 40 yards with a pistol?  Ain’t exactly easy, shipmate!

Tasslehoff (name taken from the Dragonlance Chronicles by Margaret Weiss and Tracy Hickman):  Hey, look!  A chicken!  What’s a chicken doing crossing the road?  I wonder if he’s running away from Colonel Sanders?  Mmmm…KFC…I love fried chicken…

Jedi:  Take a deep breath, Tas, you’re doing it again…

And so it goes LOL  By the way, for those who aren’t familiar, the Dragonlance Chronicles are fantasy trilogy set in the fictitious world of Krynn.  Tasslehoff is a member of a race called Kender who are essentially halflings with ADHD who are completely incapable of fear and have a tendency to absentmindedly “steal” anything they find interesting (they don’t actually mean to take it, it just somehow winds up in their pockets)

Great novels, I’d highly recommend them to anyone interested in sword and sorcery where regular people getting caught up in events around them end up changing history and saving the world.

When I was in the US Navy, I picked up a “callsign” (nickname) that I’ve used to refer to myself ever since: Ratman, eventually shortened to just Rat.  So, for instance, when my tongue tries to work faster than my brain (or the other way around) and I get tongue tied, I’ll say (out loud), “Spit it out, Rat!”

As for the scattershot-pinball game going on in my head, I once described it to a friend as if there were dozens of metaphorical people in my head, each of which has a specific interest and personality type, and they were constantly arguing.

I even went so far as to name a few of them–Chief, Gunner, Rat (he’s baseline me), Re-tread, The Swordsman, the Dark Stranger, etc.  At first, my friend was a bit…freaked out, thinking I was going Schizophrenic, until I explained that I wasn’t hearing actual voices, it was just the only way I could think of to describe what was happening.

He liked it so much, he started doing it, too LOL.  Wonder if he might’ve had a touch of ADD himself 🙂

Whether trying to follow a thread,

    Or remembering something I’ve read,

    It would really be great

    If I could concentrate,

With this ADD brain in my head.

I don’t usually “see” words or numbers in my mind so much (although, now that I’m typing this, images of equations are popping up in my head LOL).  What DOES happen is, when my eyes are closed, if I move a finger, arm, leg, or toe, I “see” the movement in my mind, even though my eyes are closed.  It’s not detailed, or in color, just a visual impression of movement, like a dim shadow, almost seen but not quite.

    However, when I do math, I instinctively find shortcuts that other people never seem to think of.  For instance:   96 X 4;   96 is 4 less than 100, so 96 X 4 is 16 less than 400.  16 is  10+5+1, so 96 X 4 then must be 400 – 10 – 5 – 1, or 384.

When I read a novel, with certain authors, I “get into the flow” of the story to the point where I’m no longer consciously reading words on paper, the narrative just leaps into my mind without any conscious effort.  If I had to guess, I’d say it’s either the result of hyperfocusing on the story, or the fact that these authors are simply masters of their craft, and their word choice forms a smooth rhythm in my mind as I read.  As long as that rhythm isn’t broken, I fall into it in no time flat, and BOOM, I’m in the middle of the story, watching it unfold around me.

Also, totally unrelated, but I can’t look at a written word without reading it; it’s a real pain in the @$$ when I’m driving, ’cause every sign I pass forces its meaning into my mind,a nd I can’t stop it.  It’s like drinking from a fire hose.

Just to be clear for the NSA technicians and ATFE/FBI agents reading these posts out there:  even if I COLD acquire dangerous toys like flash-bang grenades, I’d NEVER do something so dangerous or reckless.  Yes, I have ADHD, but I am NOT a sociopath.  Much as I don’t like some of my managers at work, I do NOT wish any of them harm.  I am NOT a terrorist LOL

Damn…I was gonna throw out a limerick, being of Irish descent and all, but then the tread changed again LOL.  I, too have that mischievous little imp in my head, but mine’s a bit…different.  See, he likes fireworks, and anything that burns or goes BOOM in general, so he says things like, “Just one little flash-bang grenade won’t hurt.  They’re not even technically lethal!  It’d be perfect, just toss it into the middle of that managers’ meeting over there…”

Luckily, even if I COULD get my hands on flash-bang grenades, the imp’s not in charge (well, not usually, anyway), so the more dangerous “pranks” don’t happen, but I DO get a good laugh out of the thought…
