I had a pretty turbulent week.. Work was turbulent the wrong way. Meeting new friends online was turbulent in a wonderful way! Kudo’s for managing without meds, Carrie! I’d be lost within a day!

You do describe a lot of symptoms that match the ones for AD(H)D. As far as the word ‘disorder’ is concerned. It is a disorder. You’re right to say that it’s a difference, but it’s when the difference starts interfering with a proper way of functioning when it’s becoming a disorderly. And when a specialist confirms the diagnose, then it’s AD(H)D.

Ofcourse it’s less strict in day to day conversation, but being afraid of words is only going to obscure the path to a better understanding of what it is you’re dealing with. And that goes for AD(H)D as wel as for an allergy to washing powder.

On a lot of fora we tend to discuss what’s bothering us, but there’s a lot of cheerfulness and good news here too.

So first thing’s first! Find out what it is, if it is what it is and then what it’s like! Even if you have it, you won’t know what it is until you get educated. And it it’s not ADD? That’s also good to know!

    Good luck with that!

(p.s. a proper study will only draw conclusions from what they set out to investigate, and so should the people who read of them. usually they’re taking very small steps. the bigger picture will not come from a single study!)

oohh that’s something I can’t get started either. I think a team sport would fit me best (baseball :)) because I have no motivation to run, jump or work out on my own, if I can also choose to sit behind my drum kit and bash away. I also started playing bass guitar last september.. always wanted one of those!

Thanks for pointing this thread put to me, toofat!! What a wonderful example of the advantage of knowing about it at an early age! You can give your kids everything they need, so they can work with it! Then it’s not so much a disorder, because you don’t have to let it come to the point where it frustrates your way of functioning! Love it!! and Kudo’s!!

    That’s an awesome story, ksbarne!

It’s not all doom and gloom! :)

I like the thought of helping our ADD offspring have a good start, as if we’re a separate species.. :D

Judging from the fogging up of my glasses, I’d say pretty humid! I’ve learned to really appreciate the soaking wetness this time of year brings around. I bet you’re not soaking up any sun between the Rockies at the moment either?

    Long live air conditioning!

@Carrie Your taste in music is rare in it’s excellence, because that’s a Carry/Carrie thing. So that can’t be the problem. Maybe some people suffer from Musicality Deficit Disorder? I am not pointing! Just pointing out a possibility! oh and well done on the Jam achievement!!

Maybe the reluctance to accept ADHD as a genuine disorder has to do with the impression that physicians and psychiatrists have been a little ‘trigger-happy’ in subscribing stimulants? And a lot of the ‘labeling’ is done on the playground by parents. And they are not to be trusted…….as far as psychiatric diagnosticism is concerned. :)

We’re bothered by this disorder, whether it’s called ADHD or Hyperactivity disorder or Lazy by nature syndrome or chicken salsa deficit disorder. It’s a disorder when it seriously frustrates your possibility to function properly. Since I’m on Methylphenidate, I’m able to act and react properly. Feels like I’m hyperactive now, sometimes, but that’s only in comparison with the zombie-like-indifferent state I seemed to be in before.

@sdwa But I have that too. My attention is like that butterfly, but I am not able or, not triggered to act upon it immediately. That’s what interests me. If we’d be able to strip the attention deficit from an ADHD person, would he/she be left with a ‘normal’ dose of impulsivity, or is the impulsivity also above normal? Probably impossible to answer since we can’t take someones inattentiveness away and leave the impulsivity untouched. My hunch would be, that the level of impulsivity is higher, but I’d be very interested if something like that was ever studied.
