Kids can learn too; mine know that two or more of them trying to talk to me at once leads to frustration.

Supposedly not all the MPH in Concerta is released, so from a 36mg Concerta you don’t get it all.

Here’s one of the pages I read regarding dose equivalence.

    http://www.addadhdblog.com/concerta-getting-the-right-dose/#30fc2

I also read some clinical reports that showed 36mg Concerta is equivalent to 10mg MPH 3x daily.

lakelly, I had an aha moment when reading your post. I prefer manual transmisstion too, but currently drive an automatic. I often go on automatic pilot thinking about things other than my driving (I agree driving itself is boring). I think you are right that since driving a manual requires more work it is easier to pay attention to your driving.

Wgreen: Maybe you are confusing Pete’s posts with mine; I’ve never referred to “gifts”. What Moyzsis did was show through genetics that having ADHD has been a benefit. Or to be more specific, having genes associated with ADHD increased genetic success (i.e. if you didn’t have the ADHD genes you were more likely to be an evolutionary dead end).

I realized I get a double-whammy hit from ADD when it comes to procrastination. I can’t handle interruptions well, so when my kids are around I put off doing things that require concentration (so I don’t get upset when they interrupt me). That’s on top of the normal ADD procrastination tendencies…

We’re not talking about CF or another serious genetic disease, so it wouldn’t influence my decision.

Tiddler: you could be right, but I think you can see how some people might interpret his statements as meaning there is no benefit to refusing medication (ignoring side-effects). Just look at Wgreen & argumentativeone’s posts.

The easy way to avoid a teacher or parent using his expert opinion as a way to force medication would be for Barkley to temper his statement to say, “ADD is a serious disorder that causes real, proven problems for people & no one should be denied medication on the basis of other people that say it is a gift”.

AgumentativeOne: “what would be the point of taking them if they were not effective or unnecessary?”

Many drugs are unnecessary yet people still take them because they provide some (perceived or real) benefit.

I have a headache. Would you say it’s necessary to take a tylenol?

My daugher gets an ear infection. Is it necessary to take an antibiotic?

Your writing shows you have at least an average IQ, and I’m going to suppose you are not a psychopath. I don’t think any normal person would suggest as you are that people should have to take drugs unless they can show that they function the way you or someone else wants without them.

So that leads me to the conclusion that you are playing devil’s advocate because you enjoy the debate for it’s own sake. And I took the bait. Touché!

JMJimmy: there is also Ritalin SR (sustained release) which doesn’t last as long as Concerta, but lasts about twice as long as regular Ritalin. The generic version of Ritalin SR 20mg sells for ~28c in Canada, vs ~$3.10/pill for Concerta 36mg.

Barkley’s web page discloses that he receives a material amount of money from drug companies:

    Speaker/Consultant for pharmaceutical companies (24%)

    – Eli Lilly Co., Shire, Novartis

So we have Barkley saying there is “nothing positive”, which implies everyone with ADD should take medication (assuming the side-effects are not worse than the ADD I guess).

And we have Moyzis that has provided genetic proof that ADD gene(s) have been beneficial for homo sapiens sapiens for thousands of years.

p.p.s. there aren’t many experts on genetics with a background that beats Moyzis.

“For the 8 years prior to joining the Faculty at UCI, I was Director of the Center for Human Genome Studies at Los Alamos National Laboratory, the first Genome Center to be established as part of the Human Genome Project (HGP)”
