billd: I can only speak for myself; I like my normal distractable self when I’m not around anyone that can trigger my

frustration/anger. I don’t take concerta when I’m alone because I miss out on discovering all kinds of interesting things in the world.

billd: From your posts I’ve read about the many and interesting jobs you’ve done. I think you’re the only one that would say you haven’t amounted to something.

billd: do you equate seeing positivies in ADHD with calling it a gift?

On the subject of sleep, one of my friends (who has sleep apnea) mentioned that sleep disorders sometimes cause problems that resemble ADHD.

Tiddler, it’s only in the last year or so that I’ve realized I might have ADD. I have an appointment with my family doctor, and if he can’t discover whether I have ADD, I’ll get a referral to one who can (so I can get a prescription for methylphenidate instead of getting it from friends).

I probably also have aspergers (EQ=7 SQ=60), which means I analyze EVERYTHING. This helped when I got bored as a kid (school, church, etc) and had to sit still as I would look at how the seats were built, or what kind of lights were on the ceiling, etc. i.e. what gets my attention is something new to learn or a problem to solve. I don’t have a problem with buying too much stuff, as I spend a lot of time analyzing first, and also trying to figure out how I might use something I already have (I never throw anything away).

There is only one thing I really don’t like about ADD, and that is my low frustration tolerance to interruptions when I am focused. I have hurt people in the past in those situations. That is why I want medication. I don’t like the forgetfullness (i.e. where did I leave my robertson #2 screwriver), but with computers (auto bill-pay, electronic calendars, etc) I can get by quite well.

@Tiddler: that also doesn’t mean there is nothing positive about their ADHD either…

I certainly don’t like my short temper when it comes to getting interrupted while I’m focused on something. The rest of the time (i.e. most of the time) I’m happy with it.

I’ve been frequently confused by the “I’m a X (insert job here)”, as if someone’s current job defines them. I’ve always thought what I’m doing now has little to do with who I am as a person. It even caused problems in my marriage; I remember my wife saying, “How can you build our house addition – you aren’t a carpenter”.

Like some others here, I find it easy to focus on challenges. That means I tend to spend a lot more time analyzing than doing. I still usually do things (eventually) to find out if my ideas work.

I’ve done a lot of work in IT. I enjoy system optimization (mental challenge) and bug fixing (modest mental challenge with quick feedback by testing).

@pete-puma: perhaps you don’t see it as something wrong with the brain, but ADD brains don’t function the same as normal ones.

co-morbid aspergers could be an explaination of argumentativeness.

Re drugs; I’ve tried concerta(methylphenidate) 36mg and I felt calmer; when my kids were interrupting me while I worked on the computer and were talking while I was trying to watch TV I didn’t react(although I still felt irritated). Normally I’d have to take a deep breath to calm down (if I was able to catch the irritated feeling before I reacted) otherwise I’d be barking at them.

After watching Dr. Barkley’s video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7cw8jHUkHiA&NR=1) I’m guessing the concerta helps my anterior cingulate work better. Related to the aspergers (and not directly related to ADD) I think my mirror nurons don’t work well, so I have a muted emotional perception.

I have trouble doing exercise for the sake of exercise, so I focus on doing productive things that involve exercise. i.e. taking out the garbage, walking to pick up the mail instead of driving, biking with my kids, etc.

I got some concerta from a friend, and tried it (36mg) yesterday. I felt calm; the lack of irritability was nice.
