Hey Brian my name is crystal and I’ve been through this too. I wasn’t diagnosed with adhd until I was 45. So all those years before I know I had problems I just self medicated. So now that I now I have inattentive adhd with impulsivity I am on biphentin 30 mg. I was on vyvanse for about 4 years but had to go off because of side effects. I definitely become tolerant with each stimulant: ie: vyvanse, concerta etc and need to switch pills when it stops working.. hang in there it’s a struggle but eventually you’ll get on the pills that work best for you. It takes time and patience and you will feel better. By the way I was not on any medication for half my life and I find that on the meds when tsken every day I feel much better than the days or weeks I take a break.
I agree with luisba it’s best to take the pills everyday in order to see best results. I also have days where I forget everything and so scattered and distracted but I’ve learned to laugh it off and say that’s just my disorganization. It gets better especially if you can do something that takes your mind off the negative 👎 and crappy aspects of adhd. All I can say is keep thinking positive and live your life the best you can.
    Good luck!!

Thanks for the input! Really interesting and I’ll read this article. Self regulation is something that I constantly have to observe in myself during the day.. that and emotional regulation.

I can relate.  I have tried changing careers after a break from my former career.  I had so many setbacks at the)3 colleges that I went to that I finally decided to live my life a different way.  Still have lots of problems dealing day to day

Hi Larynxa: I am not so depressed that I don’t get out of bed in the morning!!!! The meds do work for me. They help me function and get things done. Actually there has been a big improvement. Thanks for the response. I have been on many different antidepressants and the ones I am on now seem to work the best– at least that I can tolerate. I am just complaining about a common side effect with these types of pills– people tend to become “deadened” like all the highs and lows are evened out.

:(Btw: I tried out the cogmed 2yrs ago when it first arrived in Canada. It’s really expensive and In my opinion it only worked in the short term, not long term. I was really disappointed . I know it isn’t a cure all but I hoped the memory work would have lasted more than 2years.

There’s always new things to look for and try…..

Thanks for the reply, bill d. I just returned on this site after remembering my user name. I guess much of my problem is having the motivation to slog thru different interests and somehow find something that peaks my interest that I can do or achieve. I just need to focus and reread the vocational and career tests I have done. I have gone to some job postings and information sessions but need to keep looking for the right one.

I’ve been going through the same problems about drug “washout” and ramp up etc. The drugs I take tend to stop working after a while. i am currently on wellbutrin and pristiq. I’m not even taking a stimulant pill since it doesn’t help me enough. The bad side effects outweigh the good. I am currently taking adderall 3-4 times a week.

I have the same problems as u, Eric, with a working memory deficit and high anxiety . I am really frustrated with the ADHD drugs out now.

If u find out about new drug trials, please send me a note. I haven’t read up on guanfacine yet.

    Thanks.

yeah, busy topic! I can’t live without my iPhone! I use the calendar Ical which syncs up with ical on the computer. It works really well. Just glue it to your wrist! Make sure you have a pocket or one of those phone clips that can attach to your belt. the calendar is best since you can set and plan daily activities, events and tasks. You can also have audible alarms in the calendar format to remind you. I definitely recommend going to the store and chequing out a blackberry, iphone or normal cell phone with a calendar in it and decide which one is best for you.

    Good luck!

I sometimes wonder why my adhd is just here, with me. I feel I have been on a roller coaster. 6 months ago I was in a much happier spirit and had more drive generally happier and more focused. It seems that when I don’t have extra help from therapists or add coaches, I end up getting completely messed up. I mean, I am so unfocussed, and can’t schedule anything on paper and stick to it, My life ends up chaotic and distracted when I don’t get help for my disorganization. BTW, I am also on Adhd pills, and antidepressants. Does anyone else have problems with focus, disorganization time management, blah, blah blah?? Just curious. It’s like I had a major setback. I think diagnosis is one thing, but the hardest thing is learning how to cope with ADHD.. I also found out last year that I have an LD called a non verbal learning disabilty- NLD- which I still don’t know enough about.

Hi. I was on adderall first, and then vyvanse. Stayed on vyvanse for about 6 months. I went off it because I was not thinking as clearly as I was on Adderall. I find adderall is better since I am more focused and think more clearly. I noticed that even though I was on 90 mg of vyvanse, it wasn’t really helping much. I do hit a wall with adderall, though and need to stay at around 40 mg. I’m on wellbutrin as well. Good luck! The bottom line I think is if a pill is working for you and you can stand the side effects, than stay on it.
