I was taking a graduate course in college when the professor said I should not be asking questions since this was a graduate level course and I was disrupting the other students– four others….I would like to ask practical application type of questions- information not in the books..

I got my revenge the rest of the semester as I would correct his blackboard notes..Professor is’t the derivative of dell squarred–from the top of my head…

The follow class the professor would start with ” A correction to yesterday’s notes.. The Derivative….I would correct him an average of twice a week..

    The same professor–

On a final exam We had to derive a formula for the deflection for beam collums-(structural steel). As we were handing in the exam a fellow student asked me how I got rid of the negative sign– I replied a negative squared becomes positive. I asked him what he had done. He said I just gave him a bunch of BS to cover it up.

My exam was short sweet and correct. Now the dilema- The other student had lower grades than me so the other three I wondered what the professor would do. to make sure he got an “A” ..

The student with the error got an “A” I had the correct answer received a “B”. When I asked the professor why I had received a “B” when my answer was correct. He replied the other student did so much more work.. I just kept quiet….But the whole class knew.

I got a “B” fror the course.-his revenge but it was worth it.

I have read other post in this forum from individuals who varried their dosage and timing of the medication. They varied the dossage/timing on the brain areas involved..

example- If you had a focusing problem -with math- If your math class was in the morning you would take the medicine in the morning. If you had english in the morning and you did not need help in english you would not take the medicine in the morning- you would take the medicine one hour before math class..

    Hope this helps

From what I understand- from personal research-not an expert–(Disclaimer)

All extended release medications are not alike they vary in their delivery of the medication (release mechanism).

Some extended release tablets have an instant release part and an extended release part.

These medications -same strength- can vary with 30 % initial release-70 slow release

or 40% initial release-60% slow release etc.

    you get the idea

Some extended release are 100% slow release…

From what I understand -the medication is the same as the the initial Ritalin-The release mechanism varies to not have a copyright infringement suit.

Medical effects also depend on your personal digestive system…That why a medication may last in one person 12 hours in one person and 9 hours in another.

The bottom line-There is no guarantee on any persciption-Its a trial and error to find what works best for you.

    Good Luck

The proof is in the pudding- Your self analys is right on. Obvious the meds hit the right areas of your brain.

I would just tell the truth.. Your husband has ADHD and you noted the same symptoms. You decided to see if medication could help. The most common statement today is “Everyone gets older and there is a great posibility they develop depression” Solution -Prozac. The problem is that Prozac helps with depression it does very little for ADHD Brain. I know I was on Prozac.

The main reason for clasification and pharmacy controll is it’s potential for abuse. Your Dr.has an obligation to help you. Some time the help comes with the perscription or the denial of the perscription.

My Dr. explained the side effects of the medication. As you noted -your life changed due to changes in your brain chemistry.

Side efects are caused by stimulating areas that don’t need stimulation. –ie. over stimulating good areas. This is where dosage and delivery systems come into play. Regular visits to your perscribing physician is strongly recommended. Together you can work on the dossage and the delivery system.

On a side note …Many others myself included can tell when the medication effect has worn off. This helps the DR on dosage and times.

    Good luck on your journey…

    Congradulations on your job.

Are you taking any medications for the ADD? You might want to check with your DR.

A light dose of Zanax as needed might be appropriiate for your anxiety..

Good Luck with your “NEW” job

My first question. Are you taking medication?

In this forum there are lots of people with ADHD taking medications to help them focus– to fill in the blank.

ADHD medication helps your brain smooth out a bumpy road into a highway.

I have written this example so that younger readers in this forum can understand the medication concept.

    As a example..

Supose you wanted to deliver a load of goods from New York to Chicago. The ADHD NO MEDICATION TRAIN travels from New York to Chicago by way of Miami. In addition the train can stop at any moment to look at the scenery or let another express train go by

The ADHD TRAIN ON MEDICATION is an express train. It goes directly from New York To Chicago. It is not held up or experiences any delays.

EXPLANATION ON PROPER DOSSAGE. The ADHD TRAIN ON TOO MUCH MEDICATION GOES TOO FAST, It JUMPS THE TRACK. AND NO GOODS GET DELIVERED.

Computor example. An ADHD brain without medication is like a computer with a slow address buss. The information requested is not obtained if there is a real time interupt. The slower the address buss the greater the chance of an interupt.

    Good Luck

I have read your post and I would like to offer some observations based on my self having ADHD and taking extended release medication

I too had many of the systems you have described. Leaving jobs have finished–sloppy work- not wanting to do things, procrastination. etc

It appeats to me your husband has very active mental channel flipping and is fustrated by his inablities . Rushing jobs just to get them done….I have been there… I could not start a job if things wre not perfect to begin with. When I ran into a problem..I got fustrated and dropped it…undone.

ADHD medications wear off over time- I take my medication in the morning. It starts to take effect- and then starts to wear off.

I try to do things when the medications are active. I focus and see the clutter. I know I have to clean up and I do it.

My medications give me energy, the desire to do things correctly. and the ability to evaluate alternatives.

My medications relieves my stress and anxiety it stop my impulse to speak or lash out…

I wonder if your husband is taking the medicine or the correct dosage.

Different medications have different release rates. Some act instantly some take time and others are a combination of the two

One forum member explained how she varied the medications/dosages durring the day to handle each days tasks and objectives.

I am concerned about your husbands lack of cooperation. His internal anxiety and stress might be far greater. He might. be at his mental limit. and has partly shut down/blocked any comments as a self defense mechanism.–

Your post suggests he might also have some psycological scar issues from early childhood. He might need more counseling with a professional.

PLEASE REMEMBER.. ADHD medication is not a cure. It helps for a limited amount of time and everyone is different

The dossage should be correct and the way it is administered. There is Instant acting to get started-timed release to keep going durring the day…

    Best of luck….

My wife and I had a long discussion about our marraige and possible personality changesdue to the medication. We came to a conclusion that if the change was drastic I could always stop taking the medication.

My wife was very happy about the positive changes. My wife had severe migraine headaches, tight shoulders, back pain. All this disapeared with my personality changes. My medication reduced my quick impulses and seemingly lack of social interaction. I was able to listen to social conversations, ask questions and not interupt.

Some times it is hard to see the forest due to all the trees. Some of my friend finally admitted that I could come across as very intense. Funny how I never saw that??????? My daughter has problems also. Her children walk on eggshell. The children issue hit a little to close to home…

    Just one bad employer story

My wife worked for the telephone company as a service rep. The working conditions were so stressfull and bad that employees would get to the office at 4:00 am to sign up and be first to get the day off. They were let off depending on the day’s work load/calls.

You might get to go home at 11 AM. or 2:00 pm instead of 5:00 pm

Every service rep had to handle so many calls per shift/ generate so much income for added features-call waiting-3 way calling etc.

The shift did not start till 8:00 am.

At the first opportunity I had my wife quit- Never looked back

Life is a journey I try to walk not run. While walking. I stop if I can and smell the roses..

Sorry about your boss, co workers and sister.

Life can be difficult at times.

I gave an innocent opinion why I thought my niece did not need to replace a $300 camera with a $500 camera (1984).

I was black listed by my sister for 10 years….

    Rambling on..

I have had some great enlightened bosses and some really PI– Poor Ones. I just try to survive-knowing I would be changing jobs soon when I had a poor one..

I often placed myself in the position of my sub-ordinates and managed accordingly

I was a dept head in data processing/production controll. Paper Plant Algecieras Spain 1980-1983

Some of the things my ADHD brain did to help the office atmosphere.

The programmers in my office could thnink about personal problems-and I would never know. Production/progress would suffer.

Hence I adopted the open door policy. I would talk to anyone at any time on any subject. A 10 minute conversation led to 7 hours and 50 minutes of production. If the person needed time off He was given time off. An unfocused mind writting a payroll program is not a pretty thing. on Friday afternoon..

If an employee was not working on an application he was allowed to read any technical/work related information. I did not want him to appear busy when his time could be used for better purpose. He just could not read the news paper.

Net results- from 180 late orders a month to zero-

    Defects in orders zero.

    Payroll errors zero

    Billing -errors zero

It’s sad there are so many DUMB BOSSES out there that cannot see the big picture..

The water cooler has a purpose besides water.

My Father -In-Law in Spain said, “in Spain we work to live, in the United States you live to work” I liked Spain better.

Good Luck I will have you in my prayers.

Ok here goes. I had a high IQ-tested out 146. Thats good and bad,

Some of my history-and observations. then recommmendations.

Because we have good grades “We cannot have ADHD”—WRONG. We can get good grades because we learn to compensate.

Parents- Do not like to acknowlege they gave birth to a “Defective” child- Avoidance-Denial… You have told them 10 times already and they did not want to address the issue. Telling them to see a DR. will probably not work because they can’t t see the problem inside your brain.

Your hyper-focus-allows you to get great grades but also-tunes out friends and conversation when the mind wanders etc.

People with ADHD often have problems with relationships/work. Others think we don’t care because we can seem inatentive when in fact our minds just jump from subject to subject.

Outdoors soothes us. The out doors has a calming effect. I hated cub scout meetings in the church-loved the outdoors and hikes.

I loved looking out the window and day dreaming…looking for patterns in the wall paint–figures faces etc…

    Recommendations/other issues

NO 1. Do not give up. If you have ADHD life is so much better when diagnosed and on medication. if needed.. You can use the information to excell in your strengths. Research..Research.Research.. objectivity.. There are many things you can do to help yourself now.

NO.2 Educate your parrents-See the progam “ADDand loving it. Record it and ask your parents to watch it with you. Try to have an open discussion. ADHD is not a sign of stupidily–Our brains work differently..Many Dr’s Lawers, and engineers like me have it. We are great but our think process is diffrent. We are inventive, creative and capable of thinking out of the box.

A friend of ours has a son diagnosed with ADHD. His mother refuses to put him on medication because she did not want him known as a “MED KID” .–Social Stigma- today and lifelong suffering tomorrow….

No.3. Talk to your school councelors. There is much more information on ADHD and your school officials can help and point you in the right direction.

BAD NO 4. Untreated ADHD (not being able to focus) can lead to stress in school. Stress can block your ability to do well in test or certain subjects. Your scholastic ability in certain subjects suffer. No matter how hard you try the information cannot be retained or called upon. I would have “Brain Freeze”. I would skip over questions on a test till I could answer one easily. Once the initail stress was gone i could remember the answers to the questions I had skipped.

    Good luck

Friends listen, friends care. Some people don’t listen because they are too wrapped up in themselves. I will often give unsolisited advice. Now If I hear the same sob story over and over then I’m being dumped on–and after a while-I just tune out.

I rememeber a teacher in high school telling me “Talk, Talk, Talk all you do is talk but nothing ever comes out”

Yeah I believe when we get any attention we try to hold on to it. Sorry about the divorce. My wife said I was often off the wall and completely unpredictable. Life with undiagnosed ADHD is a chalenge for friends and family.

Divorced once.married 19 years.Thought things would get better-never did…Divorce .. best thing that ever happened. Great family I just got the Black Sheep.

Second marriage wonderful. (20 years) Yes there are good people out there. When I met my wife I basically said “What you see is what you get”. I went back to basics.. Middle class values, european background. I dated people who could relate to this.

Communication-open truthfull communication-is a requirement for me. My mind races to fast to play games. I need a solid foundation and since I have a tendency to skip and bounce the more informed my wife has is the easyer it is for her to follow along.

    Good Luck on your journey

There are lots of people who self diagnose. I do believe you are putting the cart before the horse. A skilled professional should make the diagnosis. He should be able to identify if you have ADHD and in what areas.

To be diagnosed with ADHD it has to be an “impairment” in your life. Its like the young student who cannot pay attention in class because his mind races. On medication he gets “A”‘s off medication he gets “C”s if he’s lucky.

ADHD medication helps with the passage of information. It changes the brain pathways from bumpy roads to highways.

If you do not have the bumpy road then the medicine will probably do very little for you. Also if you do not have ADHD there is a greater risk of SIDE EFFECTS because you are overstimulating “NORMAL” areas of your brain.

There are lots of people who are affected but not to the level of impairment. I am 67 years old and was recently diagnosed. It has been an impairment in my life. Its affected my work, my social interaction with my kids and others, my ability to take tests, remember conversations, details….on and on and on Oh did I mention the daily anxiety and the drinking to relieve the stress….That just poped in from nowhere..I take my extended realease in the morning. it must be just about gone right now.

I did not self diagnose my self. It was my wife who said I should go and get checked. I have responded well to medication and all my wif’e’s headaches, back problems etc have disappeared. I’m so much easyer to live with.

    In conclusion….

ADHD affects the whole family. In many ways like an alchoholic or drug addict in the family. The person who has it is can be unaware of the problem since he has lived with it his/her whole life. The Dr. who does the diagnosis usually wants the immediate family for input. to help with the diagnosis.

I hope I have not offended anyone on this forum. ADHD is too serious a impairment to be taken lightly.

When I was in college I had an electrical engineering funnel the size of a ball park . It all electrical engineering information entered with ease and without effort.

I could use theories in electrical engineering to help me in civil engineering. Similar concepts. Voltage is similar to water pressure. Higher voltage higher pressure. To high a voltage there is a short circuit spark. Too high a water pressure the pipe breaks.

Try to correlate information. to information/concepts you can get. Once I got it I got it. Try not to get behind. I did some times and the mountain just gets higher.

I asked my college professor how he became a math teacher. His answer..”I was miserable in math” I just worked on it. I worked on it . Then one day I realized I knew more then almost eveyone else. I became a professor in Math.

My hardest subject was english..dreaded it. tested 146 IQ and flunked out of college twice. After Military service I went back to college on final academic warning.in big letters ..got straight A’s graduated joined Engineering Honor Society.

High school/College can be a challege at times when we are required to take subjects that are hard for us to retain. Please don’t give up.

You are getting to the AH HA moment. Yes I love it when the mind stops racing…I can focus..I remember,My handwritting is better I can read it, I can spell much better.

There is a great difference between focus and hyper focus. I can HYPER FOCUS with out medication. This is because I am interested in the subject- or the subject can be stored in my brain- same results either way the information is retained. There is a patch to the brain cells that stores the memory. Just like computers there is an address buss in our brains. Our address buss works real well in some areas a super highway. In other areas its a dirt road and we are on a slow bumpy road.

It was impossible for me to focus on certain things..It just would not register. My medication helps me to focus in those areas that previously eluded me. ie the bunpy road is smoothed out .

And I know when the medication starts to wear off. I have learned to give my self slack. I don’t beat myself up anymnore.

I am a professional Engineer. The Anxiety of “memory lapses and “TYPOS” realy got to me. I have to sign and seal drawings. I’m financialy responsible. The diagnosis and meds have changed that.

I now understand , take my medicine and plan my work accordingly.
