Generally, I do have the “doesn’t hold grudges” thing. I’m like one of my six year old students. I can be really pissed off with someone but then an hour later interacting with them like nothing happened.

They have to do something really awful before I’m not able to do that.

One of the theories around ADHD is the low arousal theory. (Arousal in a more general sense than just sexual arousal). According to this theory, a person with low arousal needs more stimuli in order to respond than the average person. Everyday tasks rarely provide the level of stimulus required to cause much of a response.

Activities enjoyed by the person with low arousal do provide enough stimulus, and we are therefore able to spend a fair bit of time on them, though we aren’t always able to complete them.

I hope so. I’m getting married in January, and my fiance scored very high on the ADHD quiz on the site.

One thing we are doing (which wouldn’t help in your case) is that for now at least, we’re not combining households. I work in Northwest Toronto, he lives in Guelph (and works in Kitchener). We’re planning on getting a place in Milton.

We have decided that it would be better to each declutter or own places, and then move into a new house together rather than try and put my stuff into his place. I’m hoping that this way, we’ll be able to establish some routines around where stuff goes from the scratch, that would be easier to maintain.

For people who have issues with scratchy sweaters, Mark’s Workwarehouse has these sweaters that are *SOOOOO* soft. They’re the softest cotton sweaters I have ever owned.

What’s more, they’re on sale right now. :)

Oh, and they can even go in the dryer!

When did this happen with your son, Tombdragon?

The teacher who said that is woefully ignorant of Special Education issues, and I would strongly suggest (assuming that the teacher is still teaching your child) bringing that comment to the attention of your child’s Principal.

I would suggest pitching the conversation wanting to help improve the situation for everyone involved.

An excellent place to start with a teacher who thinks this way would be with the F.A.T. City Video (also known as “How Difficult Can this Be?) from Rick Lavoie

    http://www.ricklavoie.com/videos.html

Most school boards should own multiple copies of it.

There are also clips available on youtube. For example:

Therock: I’m currently in a similar situation to you. My Doctor is trying me out on Concerta. I started at 18 mg, went to 27 mg, and today was given a prescription for 36mg.

Anyways, my Doctor told me not to be discouraged that the lower doses didn’t do much for me. After all this medication is used with children and adults, so the low doses have to be quite low. He said that if we get up to 54 mg and there is no improvement, then we’ll move on to something else.

Rick Lavoie is awesome! Here’s a man who has spent his entire career advocating for kids with LD and ADHD.

The F.A.T. (Frustation, Anxiety Tension) City video (Also titled How Difficult Can this Be) is a powerful, powerful piece of work, demonstrating what it can be like in the classroom for kids with learning disabilities.

He now focuses on the social side of things because he says that over the years whenever he has asked kids with LDs if they had a magic wand to make their academic problems go away or their social problems go away, he’s never had a kid choose academic problems.

To my mind, there wouldn’t be much point. The type of person who gave me a lot of grief is either the type of person who would deny the existence of ADHD in the first place, or would accuse me of making excuses.

I have a friend with a Non-Verbal LD who was diagnosed part way through a University program. It didn’t change a thing with the Prof who wanted her out of the program, and if anything, made this Prof want her out more.

Just a quick note about school report cards in Ontario (I assume it similar in other juristictions)

The Ontario Student Record follows you from school to school within Ontario and contains report cards along with other such as Psychoeducational assessments. Once you leave a school in Ontario (whether by leaving school or graduating), the OSR is housed at your last school. However, schools cannot house the full OSR indefiniately, as they would take up way too much space.

Report cards are only retained for 5 years after leaving school. After that, the school disposes of everything except the OSR folder, The Ontario Student Transcript (which shows what credits have been awarded from Grade 9 onwards) and the Office Index card (which contains biographical information), which is held for a further 55 years.

I tend to find that Internet fora tend to hold my interest, as long as there is sufficient turnaround on the posts.

I’ve been posting to Syfy.com for years. :D

Rainbow, perhaps you should ask the Doctor for a referral to a sleep clinc, as well?

ShaneG, it all depends on who is doing the assessment, and whether or not they are covered by OHIP.

My assessment was done by a Psychologist, so I had to pay out of pocket. It cost my $3000, but that was because I had a full Psychoeducational Assessment on top of ADHD assessment. I had an Wechlser Adult Intelligence Scale (a type of IQ test) done, as well as a variety of other assessments. The end result is that I was diagnosed with an LD as well as ADHD, so I’m glad I did it.

I talked to other people who would do Psychoeducational Testing for cheaper, but decided in the end to go with the person I did, because I was using my resulting diagnosis with my employer to get workplace accomodations, and wanted to do as much as I could to make sure they wouldn’t dispute my diagnosis. The other people who were cheaper had Masters of Psychology vs. my Psychologist’s P.hD.

Also my Psychologist was referred to me by a friend with an NLD, who had in turn selected the Doctor because she had been the expert witness in a landmark case on workplace accomodations against the Federal government.

One would hope that a School Board would give accomodations without too much hassle, but about the time I was diagnosed ,there was a teacher who asked for accomodations for some sort of mental illness. The board disputed his diagnosis, and made him go “their” clinic for assessment. Whoever saw him at their clinic declared him was unfit to teach, and the board fired him. Last I heard the Union was fighting to get him reinstated. So I didn’t want to go through any of that crap if I could avoid it.

ghisino, a lot of what you are describing there, also describes me.

I always did the last minute thing, because otherwise I couldn’t get motivated. Even so, I managed to do ok in school, getting a B.Sc and a B.Ed.

When I went in for an assessment it turned out that I have ADHD and a Learning Disabilty. (Since you refer to Maths, I suspect you’re in the UK. If so, then by Learning Disability, I mean what you call Learning Difficulty. English speakers: Divided by a common language. ;) )

In any case, if you get a diagnosis, then your University would need to look at accomodating your needs. If you do have ADHD, then you might also want to try meds to see if they help you.

Combined subtype means that you have symptoms of both the Inattention subtype and the hyperactive/impulsive subtype. The test is not definiative though. You need to get a formal diagnosis.

The next step would be to speak to your family Doctor about it. They may be willing to do an assessment on you, or they may refer you to a Psychiatrist.
