I’ve read lots on ADHD as many of us have; I’d recommend you grab a copy of “you mean I’m not lazy, crazy, or stupid”, as it offers a wide spectrum of coping strategies from medications to meditation. One of the 2 authors is listed on this site as a coach.

    ..from less than Ā£ 5 : http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listing/0743264487/ref=sr_1_1_olp?ie=UTF8&qid=1333594665&sr=8-1&condition=used

I get a good adrenaline hit from exercise (cycling skiing running whatever) but in short exercise will lift your spirits even if just a long, fast-paced walk.

I hope that you get the medical attention you seek, and in the interim that these ideas might help a bit. Good luck, Jim

@ Scatty: you know parrots can live ~ 100 years +/-? Don’t go there trust me.

    @kc5jck
: so that’s why i can’t find stuff filed on m y hard drive? out of sight, out of mid indeed. If it’s important I file a paper copy with indexed tab, and then I forget about it. šŸ™„

@ Scatty and ashockley: I’ve a mini-Dachshund so walks are short. I would struggle with a bigger dog that needed lots of walking I think. If I also had a cat I’d revolt; I often get stuck temporarily with a lovebird from my ex, and it’s noise and demands for attention pretty much make me want to go out and buy a large gun. I love the thing but it drives me nuts.

You know, if you just tried a little harder… oh wait, wrong line. My bad.

    I call my methodology “stragedy”

Single male here: I do what I can, and I don’t what I can’t. A rough schedule helps me a bit. I vacuum when it needs it, not because company is coming (not many visitors here). I do laundry when i plan to be out so the machines don’t make a racket while I’m home (throw in a load with soap and then leave…it’s done when I get back…seems like a minor miracle to me). Do the same with dishes in an old dishwasher.

I’ve learned to not worry too much about undone stuff, it doesn’t help but it DOES make life far more anxious and miserable. I try to make a list daily of things I must do, cross them off as they get done, take a break when I feel I need to, and if there’s time left over walk the dog and enjoy the outside.

I still forget stuff (great memory, but very short) and get frustrated sometimes, but hey, it’s better than many others out there.

    Homemade coaching tips:

-Challenge yourself to exercise a bit more (walk around the block to start maybe)?

-look to compliment others and make it a habit, it makes you feel a bit better

-engage in conversations and use your curiosity to stay focused even if they bore the he// out of you

-get a small book and each day, take a minute to log or write down 3 things you are grateful for

Sorry, out of thoughts, but wish you luck and success. you’ll get there, just try hard…oops, if you do a few small things, make them part of your life, it’ll work. We’re rooting for you, and ourselves, Jim šŸ˜‰

Good luck Tiddler. I would not have been able to answer those questions…while I have an absolutely excellent memory, I find it to be extremely short. šŸ˜‰

@fortheloveofcats: call your doc and ask what to do. S/he may know of the Concerta Co-Pay Assist Program aforementioned. Often the link is between the drug sales rep and your doc. Good luck, Jim

I found this: http://www.addadhdblog.com/generic-concerta-in-canada/?doing_wp_cron#4060a -Worth a read for the whole thing.

*note: this is in Canada; don’t know where you live.

Janssen Ortho Releases A Program To Help To Keep You on Brand Name Concerta:

Janssen Ortho is the company making Concerta. They have invested a lot of resources into developing Concerta, as well as educating doctors, educators, and patients and their families about ADHD and its potential impact on peopleā€™s lives.

The acceptance of the generic medicine as ā€˜interchangeableā€™ is leading to people being taken off of Concerta and being put on the generic very quickly.

Janssen has created a program which can help you to stay on the brand name product. It is called the: ā€œConcerta Co-Pay Assist Programā€.

    What happens is this:

You get a prescription from your doctor that says: Concerta No Substitution

You go to the pharmacy, and give in the prescription ā€“ and insist that you get the brand name product.

If the pharmacy says that your insurance will only cover the generic product, and you have to pay the difference ā€“ then you give the pharmacy a ā€˜Concerta Co-Pay Assist Card, and then Janssen Ortho will pay the difference between the generic medicine and the brand name medicine.

In other words, when you give one of these cards to the pharmacist ā€“ you wonā€™t have to pay any extra above the costs of the generic medicine. This applies whether you are on the Ontario Drug Benefit Card, or whether you are on private insurance (i.e. from your work), or even if you are a cash payer.

@RedSquirrel: I encourage you to Google lots, as there is a ton of material out there. Most of it will help, some of it is redundant, but what I’ve learned is that you have to do it on your own as there is often no “go to” source with definitive answers. Nor does “one size fits all” solution exist.

I did a quick search and found this: http://www.amazon.com/Teaching-Teens-ADD-Reference-Teachers/dp/1890627208 ; I’m not recommending it but a) it’s a start and b) there are lots of other pertinent books at the bottom of the amazon page showing what other readers bought…you never know, the answer may be in one of those.

    Good luck! Jim

@Tiddler: *putting on my old sales hat now”…..

Pick up the ‘phone, call the doc you want to see and explain your difficulties and ask s/he how you can get around the red tape and actually see them. The worst that can happen is that you will be rebuffed; the best is … well, an appointment. I’ve always found that the worse the bureaucracy, the more the incentive to go around said red tape holder; they will probably never discover you’ve done an end run.

You’ve tried to play by the ‘rules’, now its time to chuck them and seek help for yourself, which you rightfully deserve. Because you are in the UK, if I understand it correctly you’ve got nothing to lose and everything to gain. It’s just the ‘system’ getting in your way. We’ve a somewhat similar one here in Canada. And it can cause the urge to murder someone without too much trouble. Both good systems but when you get caught in the ‘rules’, it can be really arduous to extricate oneself and get the help you need.

Put on your “Margaret Thatcher” hat, take a shot of Winston’s scotch, and go get them off their butts. Skip the cigar. šŸ˜‰

    Good luck, Jim

Oops, forgot the book suggestion: “You mean I’m not lazy, crazy, or stupid”? there are many out there and each book works differently for different folks, but I think the title here is appropriate as a ‘wake-up call’ to the teachers? On the other hand it’s a bit thick and so requires reading , which at first glance is a bit intimidating. http://www.amazon.ca/You-Mean-Lazy-Stupid-Crazy/dp/0743264487/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1332264729&sr=1-1

For you: http://www.amazon.ca/ADHD-Parenting-Handbook-Practical-Parents/dp/0878338624 and check the list of books at the bottom that others bought – they may be helpful for you also?

    good luck, Jim

Don’t know if this is any help but here goes: NC labor law states:

” Discriminationā€”Any employer who retaliates in any way

against an employee for filing a complaint or assisting an

inspector is breaking the law. The department will investigate and may prosecute employers who take such action.”
