RedSquirrel, you story reads like mine, only I made that decision going into my final year of high school. I too am extroverted to a point. For example, I love parties, but there will come a point in the evening when I just have to get away from the group for a while.
I think that it is possible to change an aspect of you personality through determination. In fact, there is a school of thought that in early adulthood you should strive to be who you are, but that in later adulthood you should explore the other side. So, a confirmed introvert should learn about the joys of being outgoing and the life of the party should discover the beauty of solitary contemplation.
REPORT ABUSEI have been on Concerta for months now. I found it difficult to tease apart the effects of the medication from everything else. My doctor was quite practical: “If you don’t think it’s doing anything for you, don’t take it for a day and see.” That was useful. I got a better idea of how it affects me – what it does and what it doesn’t do. Concerta has been very helpful at removing signs and feelings of boredom, but I am still very distractable. I have moved to a smaller dose (36) in the morning and then a small dose of Ritalin with lunch. The Concerta just wasn’t lasting.

REPORT ABUSEHow many months does it take to unwind each decade of self-doubt, low self-esteem and the pain of unmet expectations? How much effort is involved in forgiving self and others? What do you have to do for the accumulated emotional baggage to fall away? I don’t know the answer to these questions, but I think that when the ADHD diagosis comes in your 40’s or later, you should count on the healing process to take a significant period of time.

“I was ‘self stimulating’ a lot, tapping on the desk, drumming my heels etc to try to keep focus.”

I like what Dr. J. said: “It’s only a disorder if it’s ruining your life.”
For me there is a lot of hope in those words. Hope that the medication does not have to be permanent, hope that you can re-order your life so that ADHD is no longer a disorder, hope that there’s a way to realize the benefits of being who I am without having to endure the other side.

REPORT ABUSEHave to agree about Springboard. Central location close to the subway and awesome people!
REPORT ABUSEHey Tiddler,
What you said about dropping everything for a fried in need really resonated with me. Maybe it’s because I don’t have a clear idea about how much time my existing commitments will take or maybe it’s the “shininess” of the chance to do something different, but I’m the same way.
REPORT ABUSEWow, Dr. J!
That sounds like a catchy T-shirt slogan:
Arousing controversy
using confusion
Awesome!
REPORT ABUSEHi Tiddler – As far as I’m concerned, the first rule in coping with ADHD is “Know and accept yourself.” Speaking for myself, the single biggest problem I faced was trying to live up to what I perceived as other people’s expectations.
Incidentally, how did the dog take the news? I haven’t told our poodle yet, but she’s already ADHD, so I don’t think she’ll take it hard.
REPORT ABUSEScattybird – where exactly is that beach? Is there room for one more?
REPORT ABUSECool advice.
REPORT ABUSELet’s distinguish between child-ADHD and adult-ADHD. You can develop a child’s skills and give them good career advice so that they can live their life free of ADHD traits and without medication. Their life supports their emotional and intellectual make-up.
An adult who has gone 4 or 5 decades without a diagnosis probably has a thick layer of emotional crap in addition to the ADHD, built up as they struggled against unrealistic expectations. As I have changed my work habits and learned more about what I can and cannot do, the ADHD has become less of a disorder and more of a character trait that can be planned for and worked around.
I just want to warn people about coming out too soon. Wait until you have yourself pretty much figured out. Wait until you have a plan for your work / career. And don’t do it alone. Discuss it with others not connected with your work. You job is not a place to be impulsive!
