Has anyone had more recent experiences with Neurofeedback? The ADD Centre is still in business.

Scattybird – you’re welcome! It shows that you don’t have to be ADHD to be a comedian (but it helps!)

Hey Scattybird – A party on board a bike would be fun indeed!

Blbliophile – you’re right. ADHD is not the gift. You are. I appreciate your critical analysis and point of view.

Hey Scattybird, sorry about the hardware malfunction! Howie has been known to raise sparks, but this is the first time I’ve seen him take out a Blackberry. He’s an actor / writer / comedian.

Cyclone – I use my iPod and ear buds in place of a CD to get to sleep and my partner has got used to it. I make sure the wires go behind my neck though.

I have also reached the age where I can no longer say I’m prematurely grey.

Naps really help me. Before I had the diagnosis. Before I went on Concerta. I would nap for 20-30 minutes on weekends. It made a world of difference for me. Somehow, I never made the connection to work.

Even though the meds have helped a lot with inattentiveness, I find them less effective with distraction. I can control distraction better in the morning than in the late afternoon (unless I have a looming deadline – but that’s another issue). I know very few people can do this, but we have a “sick room” in the office that I can disappear into for 20 minutes and it has really helped me keep my focus for the rest of the day,

I use guided visualization recordings. There is nothing like a soothing voice to help me drift off. And I’m down 3 pounds as well.

    Hey GA,

Showing that you are cool under fire, that you have responded professionally to this complaint and have done your homework, should help in your case. My advice to you would be to continue to advocate for your job back as you are doing AND to start the job search just in case.

If someone said I’d be unemployable because of my ADHD, I would come back with a stinging rebuke that would singe their hair. Unfortunately, the rebuke would be said in the shower the next day. I never come up with snappy retorts in the moment. I would probably do exactly what you did.

Still, for me, that is like saying to a woman that only a man can do that job, or to a Caucasian that white folk can’t swing etc. It’s a slap in the face and what’s more, it isn’t even factually correct. It’s a gross over-generalization based on a stereotype. You know it. I know it. Yet, if it were said to me in that context, it would hurt just like a slap in the face. You didn’t need that to come to grips with your situation.

As an ADHD person, there are times when you will shine and times when you won’t. Hey, isn’t everyone like that? Thank you for posting your rant.

I too want to be very open about what I bring to the table, but I don’t label it, ADHD. I am frank with my staff that someone else needs to be the keeper of the project list and ensure that things get done. I get heavily involved in planning and creative problem solving. I too have over 30 years experience, most of it in consulting, and I agree with toofat. It sounds like making excuses. As an employer, I would much rather have a staff member come to me and say that (s)he needs this or that accommodation to be an effective member of the team than that they would blame a bad result on their condition.

Great idea! It’s kind of like a mindfulness approach to daily living.

I’m working on the theory that it’s easier for me to learn how to bring the focus back to the task I want to accomplish than it is to prevent distractions. I am far from working it all out. One thing I have found is that I’m distractable ALL the time, but it’s much easier for me to re-focus in the morning than later in the day. I am testing whether taking a nap helps me bring the focus back and early results say that it does. For me, it works better than caffeine or sheer will power. It’s hard to do at work, but I’m testing this more on week ends now.
