I didn’t really read the other replies, because I’m probably getting to close to when I should take my next dose. But I’d like to agree with all of them anyway from what I -did- see. I’d like to see what Dr. J has to say about it. There are different mindsets from everyone, but as an adult with ADD who didn’t get diagnosed until recently, I think that looking back that medication would have been a godsend. But like some of the others said… we’re all different, each case… so….

Do what you know to be best.

I see where you’re coming from here… and I completely agree with you that ADHD is crippling in this society. I got interviewed over the phone for regional radio yesterday and my heart was RACING. I had to sound eloquent on a subject that directly effected me, without any of the conversational cues you can get by ACTIVELY watching someone. So there was a bit of (un-noticeable) overlap.

I’m not saying that ADD/Autism are the same… but what I am saying is that our brain chemistry also has the ability to be a gift as well as something that requires consistent work and self awareness. I’m also not saying that we’re a different species, but that brain chemistry wise, we are different. We have a permanent disability, which effects each and every one of us in a very unique and different way, but we have tools and techniques to help us interact with the world around us.

I guess I posted the story to show that people who aren’t “normal” can contribute amazing things that “normal” people either can’t do, or can’t do easily. That would be my message, and my intent.

As an aside, I just read one of Will Ferrel’s tweets… and he said, brilliantly:

Think POSITIVE: I fell down the stairs then said, WELL I GOT DOWN THOSE STAIRS FAST.

Okay, okay, okay! I have a new one! And it’s HILARIOUS. I got a number of Indigo/Chapters/(BOOKSTORE) gift cards for my birthday this past Monday. So I went out to buy myself “You mean I’m not Lazy, Stupid, or Crazy?!” at Indigo all excited. I made sure to bring my wallet AND the gift card, heck, I even made it out the door with my coat, shoes and other clothing on, along with my cellphone and car keys. I was on a ROLL.

So then I drove to Indigo… went in, looked up the book on their system, went straight to the correct section, found the book, and then went over to the cash feeling pleased as much. Here is what happened next:

Cashier: “Oh hey! Good to see you again.”

Me: “Yeah, you too, what’s new?”

    Cashier: “Same old, you know.”

    Me: “Isn’t that the truth.”

    Cashier: “So, that’ll be $24.60.”

Me: “Awesome, I have a gift card for twenty right here!”

At this point I confidently reach into the pocket I remember putting the card and… (you knew it), it’s not there! So I start casually patting down all my pockets and then it dawns on me! I’m a very tall man (6’5) and I drive a Nissan Sentra (small car), so sometimes when I drive I take things out of my pocket that distract me. I laugh, and look at the cashier.

Me: “Totally ironic… I left my gift card in the car. I’ll be right back!”

The cashier laughs too, pleased that I’m amused… and I go out and grab the gift card. I come back in, and a line has formed, so I wait patiently in line, congratulating myself at all the good work I’m doing with my cognitive behavioral therapy (I HATE LINES). I get to the front, and produce my gift card.

Me: “Alrighty! Let’s do this.” – I proclaim.

    Cashier: “Excellent, so that’s just… $4.60.”

At this point I reach into my pocket for my wallet. Which I took out of my pocket. And left in the car. And laugh nervously.

    Me: “You wouldn’t believe it…”

    Cashier: “No!”

    Me: “Yes!”

    Cashier: “The car?!”

    Me: “YES!”

At which point we both burst into hysterical laughter. The other two people in the store look at us like we’re crazy, and I go back out to the car, wiping away tears of laughter. I go back in, complete the transaction and make a joke about how it looks like the book is a good purchase after all.

Honestly, it was one of the funniest things that’s happened to me, ADDwise, in awhile. Totally an ADDventure of my own!

I’m proud to be Canadian, but at this time it’s a bit trying to be a singer with the name Justin. It was fine a few years ago when Timberlake was bringing sexy back for us Justin’s… but now, it’s all about your HAIR.

I’d say going to talk to your specialist wouldn’t be a bad choice, since it would seem that your treatment plan isn’t working up to it’s full potential. I’m Canadian, so I can’t tell you where to look, but I know that the States do support people with long term disabilities… there must be a program officer near where you live that could help you out?

My only other bit of advice for you would be to look for a therapist/life coach. If that intimidates you, I’d go out and by Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Dummies. My doc recommended it to me…. said that any other book on the topic wouldn’t be engaging enough for an adder’s mind.

I definitely wouldn’t give up hope, there are treatments for what’s going on with us. It’s just a matter of getting the help that’s out there… it’s hard, but once you get it, trust me, it’s worth it.

That was a repost of a note I just posted on facebook. I felt so strongly about what I said that I really wanted to repost it here in the emotional journey because I feel that sometimes it’s easiest to post, to cry out, when we need help and support. But I also feel that it’s really important to share the good stuff, so that when other people need to SEE, to know that there is a silver lining or a light at the end of the tunnel, it’s right here.

My diagnosis with ADD was just a step in a total lifestyle change that I was undergoing, and in many ways was the keystone for it, the one piece that was needed so that all the other parts could work together. Since ADD and LOVING IT?! and the quiz on this site led me to it, and to my new direction, I couldn’t be more grateful.

My profound new abilities (or rather, abilities realized) have come to fruition in more ways than I can realize, but most tangibly in my webpresence. I hate to self promote, but since I feel that we’re a tight knit community, you guys would appreciate the hours of work and FOCUS it took to make this.

So… if you want to check out http://www.indiegogo.com/justinopera I would be honored. I would be thrilled if you’d consider sharing it with a friend or two, as the more “buzz” this gets, the more likely my campaign will get featured on the mainpage.

My only hope for all of you out there who are struggling is that you keep your eyes on the prize. It gets better. It’ll always be a challenge, because that’s what life is… but it gets better!

    Love,

    Justin

It’s a common problem, but ADDers, there is hope! Cognitive behavioral therapy! I RELY on it when my medication is either worn off, or is wearing out… and it’s already saving me a world of hurt. I think that we have to accept just as much responsibility as we expect the people being effected by us to!

    Hey amazon,

I’m not sure which country you’re in, so I’m not sure how helpful this advice will be… but I think the best thing you could do would be to go to your gp and get a referral to an ADD specialist, if you feel like you may have it. I’m 32, and I was only recently diagnosed. It was a little scary to reach out for the help, but to be completely honest with you… it was a godsend.

While you’re at your doctor’s office make sure you tell them everything you’ve told us here. There are definitely other options (in Canada) for people who have neurological conditions which are disabling. Talk to them about it.

Either way, best of luck. Don’t give up! Once you have a window into why your life has been this way, it’s the first step towards taking control of it. Keep us posted!
