    Hi Wendy,
I’m sorry to hear that you are having a difficult time at work. I know that I have difficulty when I have to work in a group of new people because they don’t get me. Even some people who have known me for a while still have issues with me but they overlook it now because they know that I’m a good person and a hard worker. It’s odd saying that because I often feel like a failure. My self esteem is in the toilet most days. I work 2 jobs now. My main job has me working from home as a business analyst. Not a great choice for an ADHDer but I don’t have to deal with too many people. I also have a part time job in retail. I love that job because I get to help people.
Maybe it’s just a matter of finding the right position. Along with my ADHD I have anxiety, depression, a bit of OCD, dyslexia… I have had my ups and downs over the years too so I know how hard it can be.

I don’t know what else to say other than if you would like to keep the conversation going I am often here and am more than willing to listen and share.

    Thanks fyjimojo,

I did get the video and agree with you that the skills presented in “ADD and Mastering It” are well worth the price, especially now that it is on sale! 😀 It’s one that I will have to review again and again to reinforce those skills. I especially liked number 21. Patrick might call that one a “Smoker”!

Thanks for the recommendation and thanks to Rick for putting it together.

    Welcome to the forum fyjimojo!

Filling that white noise helps me too but I learned to do it with familiar music. If I play background music that I am very familiar with (Beatles, Doug and the Slugs, Strange Advance) the part of my brain that gets distracted seems to focus on that and doesn’t splinter into a million subthoughts that I get lost in. The rest of my brain seems to be able to focus on work. While it’s not perfect (I still manage to drift away) it does help me. Having that roar of the engine in your head all the time must have made it hard to think of anything else but racing! The perfect activity for you! 😀

I was just thinking of downloading ADHD and mastering it. Did you find it helpful?

    Regards

Hi birdie and welcome to the forum!

Those do sound like ADHD traits. I have most of those and more (except the Autism and PTSD). While they do sound like ADHD, however, it can’t be diagnosed based on a single forum entry. That being said I think there is enough there to warrent a visit to a doctor for an evaluation. The testing prossess is quite lengthy and will often involve family members and friends in order to get a clear view of how it affects your life. While you wait for testing you can read up on it. There are some great videos and blog entries on this site as well as other sites and books. You can also learn a lot from reading the forum entries in here.

    Best of luck

    Hi Sarah,

I thought I had it at 52 and was diagnosed with the combined subtype of ADHD at 53. While I have yet to find medication that works for me I can at least put a label on it and try things that don’t require a doctor (i.e. Diet and excersize). The doctor that diagnosed me wasn’t surprised at all that I was there as he had seen many people our age come through and test positive. I can relate a great deal to what you have been going through with the exception of the reading part as I also have dyslexia which has made it challenging to read especially long texts or novels. I don’t have any close friends anymore. They drifted away as I got married and started my family. I also suffer from a low self esteem and I don’t know how people would want to be with a loser like me so I don’t try. While I know I have been sucessful in my life I can’t shake the feeling that I am not living up to my potential. I hear people tell me I am wonderful and smart but have a hard time believing it. When I mess up I would say I’m sorry but after a while people start thinking that I don’t realy mean it because I inevitably do it again. I also suffer from episodes of depression like now. I also was treated by psychologists and physicians who tried to help me for many years but did not see the signs of ADHD. I went through two group sessions on CBT which I found helpful but soon after the course ended I would drift back into my old routine. The way I see it if I do nothing I am doomed to continue as I have in the past. If I embrace the diagnosis and accept my condition then I at least have a chance at a new normal. Does that make sense?

I think being tested is a wise decision and wish you all the best.

    Hi Lily,

I suffer from Hypersomnolence, a close cousin to narcolepsy. I’m seeing a specialist, psychiatrist Dr. Atul Khullar, who told me that 30% of his patients have ADHD. Apparently it is very common to have fatigue as a side effect. You can use me if you like.

    Hi brittsc2010,

I think your best resources will be your pharmacist and your doctor. Your pharmacist should be able to discuss dosage and side effect related issues with you and your doctor can adjust your medications accordingly. While some on the forum may be able to relate their experiences to you the answers you get will vary greatly from person to person so it’s probably not the best source of advice.

I hope you find something that works for you.

I do a bit of programming myself but not likely to the extent that you are doing. I’m working on a project to get my Arduino to drive my old Hearoid robot. I like projects like this but I seem to go in spurts where I’m into it and then I’m into something else. If I can’t understand something I tend to get frustrated put it aside for a while. I have enough parts to build a milling machine but haven’t completed it. They have been with me for over 10 years. Some day….! 🙂

You will find many forum entries talking about injecting yourself into a conversation and oversharing. It seems pretty common among our clan. It often takes all of my mental effort to keep myself out of things. I’m sure that I have ticked off a few coworkers by butting into their sales pitch with my own words of wisdom. 🙂

    Hi Dinak,

I tried the Omega 3 suppliment route but didn’t notice any effect on my ADHD symptoms so I’m not taking them now. I did watch a presentation by Dr Russell Barkley recently where he states that there are no research studies that showed any improvement in ADHD symptoms while on a diet high in Omega 3. Maybe it’s because it wasn’t being combined with other essential nutrients like the Omega 6? Who knows. Just food for thought. (Pun intended) 😀
