Shutterbug55, it sounds like you have some very understanding friends! That’s great!
Ladyviking48, you have gone in the direction my family has started to stear towards. I think you are right when you say less is less. Less stress and worry and panic. My wife and I only went to one function this Christmas and spent an enjoyable Christmas eve/day with the immediate family. It was one of the most relaxing holidays ever. My wife and I took that same tact last summer when we decided to go camping on our vacation with absolutely no agenda to do or see anything. While we did go and see a few sites when we got there we had no pressure to take everything in. Again a most relaxing time.

Try telling the doctor that you are depressed and that Welbutrin has worked for you in the past. Welbutrin, acording to my psychiatrist, has an energizing component that works on some ADHD sufferers like myself. Also get them to refer you to a psychiatrist. The Welbutrin might be enough until you can get in to see them.

    Best of luck

I heard an interview with a guy who discribed how Leonardo Davinci was as a person and I thought to myself “Davinci must have had ADHD” so I googled it and sure enough there is speculation that he did have it. It lead me to this YouTube video of a guy who is basically saying the same thing as your psychologist. You don’t have a problem, get over it. Did he just say that? In the video he gives five things from the DSM5 that he thinks are just stupid. ADHD is his number one stupid thing, along with others like overeating disorders, gambling addictions, hording disorders, and others. I thought about leaving a nasty comment with links to all kinds of reading material but thought the better of it. It would just make him want to argue with you and you would get nowhere. In it he says, amoung other things, that if Leonardo Davinci can have ADHD then there is no problem and all we are doing is stifling our creative genius. He obviously doesn’t have a clue.

While I don’t have experience with the desk bike I am familiar with the lack of energy. I’m seeing a specialist for my problem and was diagnosed with Hypersomnia, a little understood disorder. My doctor told me that 1/3 of his patients have ADHD so it seems to be one of those comorbid disorders.

If you try the bike idea let us know how it worked. It sounds good to me. I seem to focus better when I’m on my elliptical so why not a bike?

Good idea Rick. I learned to break things down in a CBT class I took this year. It sounds so intuitive but I have a hard time putting it into practice.

As for me I have been able to make it to the last 6 meetings of my ADHD support group. It has been a challenge for me to think into the future and make plans (like booking the day off) but I did it! High Five!

It’s amazing how quickly we can get distracted. I once wanted to make a sandwhich so I went to the fridge and opened the door. The next thing I knew I had spent a minute or more thinking about the Softwood Lumber dispute while standing in front of the open fridge without even thinking about the fixings for my snack! Did I mention I haven’t found meds that work for me yet.

I would be honest with her.  Together the two of you will be stronger and maybe even be able to help each other out.

    Hi ortamom4,

I can relate to your situation and sympathize with you.  When I was first diagnosed I found that the doctors I had knew of ADHD but no idea where to find the resources so I was left to my own devices.  It wasn’t until I found my local ADHD society/support group that I was able to get the help that I was looking for.  You can find one in pretty much every major city.  You can also contact your local college of physicians (not a school but the body that registers doctors).  They would know which doctors, psychologists, or pshychiatrists are familiar with adult ADHD.  I hope you can get the help you need.

That’s a classic lolo222.  Especially with something as boring as housework.  Even at my best I would rather be doing anything but that.  Tasks that are boring, time consuming, or overly challenging can make me run the other way.  Unless, of course, if I am interested in the activity.  I can spend hours happily rearranging the furniture but avoid cleaning the bathroom until I can’t stand it in there anymore.

Good luck on doing your chores.

Thanks for the insight.  It is good to get a first hand account of a therapy.  It certainly sounds like an interesting method.  I’ll be sure to look it up.

I’m no expert but feel free to reach out to me anytime.  Just send me a private message or post a question on the forum.  Me or one of the many forum members  will help if they can.

in Leduc, just south of Edmonton, there is also nothing for ADHD.  Edmonton has some resources but they are well hidden.  I started going to an ADHD support group here and it has been very good for me.  A lot of people telling stories I could have written myself.  See if you can find one in London.  If not you may have to create one. 😀

I was tested for sleep apnea but didn’t have it.  I was diagnoced with Hypersomnolence though.  Apparently I sleep well according to brainwave patterns but always experience daytime sleepiness.  Throw in some Beta blockers for SVT (tachycardia) and I can sleep anywhere, anytime.

I might have to try journaling.  It has been recommended to me by a few people now not only for dreams but to track your thoughts and feelings.

I’ve never heard of EMDR but it sounds interesting.  I’ll have to look it up.  Are there any resources you would recommend?

I love the analogy! Gross 😉

    Hi DT,

CBT really focuses on three key elements; thoughts, actions, and feelings. Our thoughts effect our actions which affect our feeling which affect out thoughts. Sometimes we get into a negative cycle and we need to get out of it. Of the three elements thoughts are the most effective point for a person to make a change in the cycle.  The CBT class I took focused giving us practical skills to recognize and stop negative thoughts which bring us into a downward cycle and change them into positive thoughts that will break that cycle.  Along with my ADHD I suffer from depression, anxiety, and an incredably low self esteme.  CBT really helped me to work on recognizing the negative thoughts.  Once you see them you can work on defeating them.  It’s not always easy and in my case will require a CBT refresher in the near future (old habits are hard to break).  As for the empirical evidence I don’t know of any personally.  It has been around for a while and there is a lot of good material available free on the internet.

    Hi DT!

I did get your message but had errors when I tried to reply to it.

I think they could call ADHD “Tangent Disorder” because for me my brain peels off in so many directions that I can’t pick one to focus on.  The more tangents the more hyper I get.

As fas as learning goes I need to understand something before I can claim to know it.  In school they used to give us formulas and tell us which numbers to plug to get the result you want.  I hated that because I had no idea why the formula worked, just that it did.  When I have the understanding of a concept I can apply it, anywhere.
