    That looks great Larynxa,

I had no idea there was such a large variety of colours (and I realize that those are only a small sample of what must be available). You have nice penmanship too! Keep up the great work. I imagine that you can get quite engrossed in your work. I’m jealous!

    Thanks for sharing.

Hi and welcome to the forum Andreaaaaaah!

There are people on this forum who I’m sure can relate to you, as can I. Except maybe for the fertility thing 😀. Like you and many others with ADHD we can work hard and still feel like imposters. We pose as regular members of society but underneath don’t feel like we fit in or deserve anything we have. We struggle at times just to get by. I guess in the armed forces there was probably enough adrenalin to keep you going through the tough stuff. I think you might have a career as a gardener or landscaper by the sounds of it.

Good luck on the fertility thing. I’m sure God is looking out for you.

    Regards

    That sounds fantastic Larynxa,
It’s too bad we can’t post pictures in our posts. I’d love to see what you’ve done. Sounds like you’ve found a great way to practice mindfulness!

    Thanks for sharing.

I’m sorry to hear that this is causing you so much stress and anxiety. Before I knew about ADHD I suffered from anxiety and panic attacks along with my depression. They are all disorders that are associated with ADHD (co-morbid). When I discovered that I might have ADHD (at the ripe old age of 52) things started to make sense and with help I have been able to get some relief.

I wish you all the best regardless of what choice you make. Just remember that you can come here anytime for help or a shoulder if you need it.

If there is one thing I’ve learned it’s that each person is unique in the type and severity of their symptoms. I’ve heard of many people being able to read well but can’t focus on getting things organized. I think the most common symptom is the brain always on the go with no off switch even at night. It’s been described as watching TV but somebody else has the remote. My brain will jump from one topic to another at the drop of a hat. It would go something like this.

    “The dishwasher needs emptying”
“I used to wash dishes at this nightclub downtown”
“When you’re alone and life is making you lonely You can always go downtown.”

And before you know it you’re on Google looking up Petula Clark

Have you tried the ADHD test on this site? It’s pretty general but a good start at determining if it’s worth persuing.

    Hi Colliequest,

Welcome to the wonderful world of ADHD. I certainly think ADHD is worth getting checked out. You will find many people posting to this site wondering if they have it. Most of the time they describe ADHD symptoms to a tee. ADHD symptoms can change over time so I’m not surprised yours are different from when you were a child. If you can find a physician or psychiatrist that can assess you for ADHD it could be the start of something good. If you have it they will likely prescribe medication but they are very well researched and are considered to be extremely safe. There are other things you can do for yourself that will help. Diet and exercise are the most important things. A high protein diet, especially in the morning is a good start. Exercise can come in many forms but the rule of thumb is “Anything that’s good for the heart is good for the brain”. Other things will also help like having a place for everything (i.e. keys, cellphone, wallet (Purse) etc.). I’m just starting to journal things I need to remember and rely on my calendar in my kitchen to keep a visual clue of appointments, deadlines, bill payments, birthdays, etc.
I think the biggest thing of all is to get an ADHD education. Learn as much as you can from reputable sources like this site. There are many great blog entries, forum posts, and videos. There are also some good web resources out there too. I found that I benefitted most from meeting other ADHDers at my local ADHD support group. Even prior to my diagnosis I found a large number of kindred spirits who were more than willing to share their experiences with me.

I wish you best of luck on your journey.

    Hi Medvin,

Those do sound like ADHD traits but a diagnosis can’t come from a single forum entry. Because they seem to be affecting you in a negative way I would recommend that you see your doctor to get a proper diagnosis. From there they can begin a form of therapy whether that be medication or something else. In the mean time educate yourself about ADHD. You can read through these forums and find many similar examples of ADHD symptoms. Try watching some of the excellent videos on this site. There are many sites on the web that are dedicated to ADHD that could be helpful. If you have a question you can post it in the forum and someone may have an answer or be able to share their experiences.

At this stage in my ADHD journey I would agree with you 100% missmenow. I haven’t personally heard anyone say it was a “gift” and those that manage through have an extraordinary drive. I admit to having drive too but my ADHD has gotten in the way more times than it has propelled me forward. Yes, there are times when I hyper focus but rarely does it happen on a task I’m supposed to be doing. I guess it might be different if I had a job that was exciting every day. Instead I’m behind my computer all day working on spreadsheets. :~

    Hi Moldyfeather,

With the exception of your age amost everything you mentioned reminds me of myself. The thing that surprised me the most is the walking on my toes. I did that as a child and still do it today although my heals don’t quite lift as high as they used to back then. I had never heard anyone ever mention that trait before now and, like my ADHD, thought it was just me and how I was. The chattering teeth to a song was another one. Hey, this may sound gross but do you swish spit between your teeth to a tune in your head?

    Bad memory? Check…
    Disorganized? Check…
    Stare into space? Check…
    Lose stuff? Check…
Bounce from hobby to hobby? Check…
    Procrastinate? Check…
    Called Autistic? Check…

If I had to guess I would say that you were a good candidate for ADHD but one paragraph in an ADHD forum isn’t enough to tell for sure. It should be determined by a doctor who has training in the field of ADHD.

If you do have ADHD there are things that you can do to improve things. It is widely accepted that diet and excersize can improve ADHD symptoms. Eat more protien especially in the morning and reduce your carbs, especially refined carbs like sugar, white bread, etc. Once you have been diagnosed you may be offered medication. It is often the first line of treatment and is very safe. My recommendation for you is to educate yourself about ADHD. This is a good start. There are also ADHD support groups in most cities. I personally found it helpful to hear stories from other people with experiences just like mine. If you like I can recommend some other websites, books, etc. that I found helpful.

If you have any questions don’t hesitate to ask. This is a pretty safe place to be. You are part of our community.

Btw you write very well and by the number of edits I would bet you are well read and take pride in what you put to print. If you read through the forums you will see many posts much longer than yours. We don’t judge based on the length. Sometimes it can be theraputic to get the words out into the world.

    Hi Jane1,

You are not the only one who has done that. Just try and develop a routine that will help you to remember to wait. There is a movie called Ever After with Drew Barrymore that my family really enjoyed. In it she and her father had a tradition where he would always stop and wave at the gate as he left the house. I used that tradition when dropping my kids off. I would wait for my kids to wave as they lined up for school. Of course sometimes they wouldn’t because they forgot but at least it prevented me from being distracted in that moment. Maybe something like that will work for you too.

    Hi Emilee,

So you’re a bit of an adrenaline junkie! 🙂 I was always physically active as a kid too. I wasn’t much into organized sports although I did play soccer for a few years. I would play almost anything outdoors (Baseball, soccer, football, tennis, swimming etc.) I’m not much of a reader as I can’t focus for more than 10-15 minutes at a time and I read very slowly. It’s part of my ADHD I guess. That and my Dyslexia. I can, however, stay focused on shows especially if I can binge watch them on YouTube, Netflix etc. I do find it hard to break away from that and do real work. It’s a bit of a guilty pleasure. 🙂

    Hi deedee00,

It doesn’t sound reasonable that your doctor didn’t prescribe you with enough meds, even at 40mg, to get you to your next appointment. I know it can be a challenge to get in to see a psychiatrist. Is someone covering your psychiatrist’s patients while they are away? You may want to see them.

    Hi eashline92,

As a kid I loved building with Lego. Now I love learning new things. With my ADHD brain switching topics all the time I find myself researching all kinds of things. Whatever I find interesting. Sometimes it lasts a few hours and sometimes months. I have been on and off the Tiny Homes thing for many years now. I doubt that I will ever build one but I love learning about them and designing my own.
