    Nimthiriel,

    WELL PUT!!!!

especially: …”The other thing is that going to an ADHD site hoping to find someone with something in common with you is a lot like going to a diabetes site hoping to find someone with something in common with you….”

    njdd,

I think forcing people to reveal their locations would violate privacy.

Not everyone would feel comfortable posting in an environment where they could not control how much of their personal info they would want to be in the public domain (possibly “forever” btw) .

It’s not just people who land in this forum on purpose with an interest in ADD who are likely to read all this, have you ever googled a topic you have posted on before? I’ve done a few searches just to see, and they come up in the first result page often at the top. Now call me paranoid, but even if you have a supposedly anonymous user name, some of the info revealed here is so personal and specific I think it would be easy for someone familiar with the person to recognize them.

An interesting consideration in terms of the other topic that’s been floating around the forum lately about disclosing your add or not. Now is a nosy neighbor or un-sympathetic boss likely to be googling and come upon your post and say “AHHA -I knew it!” ? Probably not, but stranger things have happened :-)

    Just sayin’…..

A book that really helped me when I went back to university was

Becoming a Master Student by David Ellis

You can see a description at the amazon link below.

    http://www.amazon.com/Becoming-Master-Student-Tenth-David/dp/0618206787

Other than motivation, I attribute the study skills I learned in there to my success. It was well before I ever thought I had ADD.It’s kind of a workbook at the same time, caters to various learning styles and is very visual. Worth every penny!

Now if only I could find it, I would re-read it and force my kids to read it:-) Still haven’t solved the misplaced items problems as you can see :-)

Well i discovered the ADD possibility about a year ago. It took me a while to get a proper diagnosis but managed that in the Spring. Ultimately it has helped me become aware of my actions and has allowed me to start making changes. I only started Biphentin in the fall.

I wasn’t really sure if I wanted to go this route and didn’t know what to expect. But I’m really glad I did because it has helped me to focus and complete tasks. It’s a very gradual process though and all of a sudden you realize how much things have changed but it’s certainly not an overnight thing. i think the key for me has been to focus on changing one area at a time instead of my old way of trying to do everything at once.

Since I tend to be very creative and over-complicate things I could easily go overboard. You mention getting nowhere on a project despite hard work – I know what you mean. This is where the meds have really helped reign me in and get me to break things down into more realistic, manageable and organized bits.

I can relate to that on the spot freezing thing – it’s awful.

However, are you able to somewhat anticipate the general nature of the questions ( seems you already have by the example you gave) ?If so, try to come up with 2 or three variations of answers ahead of time. I’m blanking on examples here

I have a book somewhere that has all sorts of questions and interview techniques but can’t find it for a while now otherwise I’d give you better examples. But if you’re not sure of the sorts of questions it might be a good idea to get a hold of a book like that. This might also be a good way to give you ideas as to how to turn around the conversation to something you can control the answer to and re-direct them talking about your strength. Hope this makes sense, basically the technique the politicians use all the time :-) However, the worst thing is to BS because that always becomes very obvious.

    JMW,

In terms of your statement “I’ve got to change things now, but I’m really scared that it might be too late in my career to get things right.”…

It’s never too late to do anything -remember ADD does seem to come with an all or nothing mentality. For example, I returned to university to finish my degree in my thirties despite a miserable school record when I was younger. And that was long before I was diagnosed with ADD!

Before returning I would occasionally lament to whomever was listening at the time that it was too bad I hadn’t studied ( fill in the blank with whatever I thought it was too late for that particular day) in my “youth,” blah, blah, blah. I was always surprised when someone would say “well, why don’t you do it now?” One day that actually made sense to me and I did go back to school. I did amazingly well but of course had I known about the ADD, don’t think I would have had to work so hard to get through it

Anyway, my point here is that at 53 you’ve still got lots of time to do great things! Think of it in relational terms – if you think you had lots of time before this age – for arguments sake, lets say you “wasted” twenty years of your life – you know the stuff we all say – ” if only I knew then what I know now” – then think ahead of the potential you have to make the next 20+ years really amazing!

Since you are now aware of the ADD, you are well ahead of the game too boot. While it may be a challenge it’s surely not impossible if you evaluate your strengths and work with them in order to combat your weaknesses.

Better stop before I rattle on :-)

I was reading Sari Solden’s Women with Attention Deficit Disorder book the other night ( for the up-teenth time – there’s a wealth of info in there) and she mentions going through the grieving process after diagnosis – denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance. Thought I’d mention it since both of you talked about denial in your posts. Mind you when I read the depression part I kinda hoped I’d pass through that one cuz definitely don’t have time to be depressed!

I have been told by doctors, as well as read in a variety of books about ADD, that in order to increase dopamine levels etc and improve brain functioning that exorcise is key. I’m rather skeptical about inversion tables, sounds like something a crafty inventor came up with as a get rich quick scheme. Pesonally, I would think excercise is the better choice since it’s required for general health not just ADD.

I just googled a bit more on this and found the following.

A small study published in a Russian medical journal in 1985 concluded that while inversion raises cerebral blood supply, the brain’s use of oxygen during inversion actually decreases.

    source: http://www.livestrong.com/article/338934-what-are-the-benefits-of-gravity-inversion-tables/

In an about.com article about the benefits of exercise for ADD I found the following quote from famous Dr. Ratey:

There are many reasons for exercise in ADHD. Exercise almost immediately elevates dopamine and norepinephrine and keeps them up for a period of time so that it acts like a little bit of Ritalin or Adderall. It also helps to still the impulsivity and still the cravings for immediate gratification as it works to wake up the executive function of the frontal cortex, which in turn allows for delay, better choices, a bit more time to evaluate consequences.

source: http://add.about.com/od/treatmentoptions/a/ratey.htm for the complete article

Anyway, Just sayin’, but if you wanna hang like a bat go for it :-)…..

One of the symptoms of ADD is feeling like an internal motor is driving you. Is that what you mean? What you two describe is how I feel as well – kind of being pushed although you don’t know why. Even if there’s no deadline you still fell like you have to hurry.

    Hey I just discovered something:

WE CAN EDIT OUR POSTS!! Can’t believe I never noticed the Edit link right next to the “posted x minutes ago” at the end of the message.

So write all you want – you can always go back and fix it.

But not sure maybe there’s a time limit – just noticed the older posts don’t have an edit link.

Well I don’t think schools in general focus too much on critical thinking so the rest of the population is often just as lacking in this skill.

And while I agree this site has been fun and it’s helpful to get to know others with the same kinds of challenges, lets not forget that

there a just as many non add people who aren’t happy or have not lived up to their own or other’s expectations.

I think we are lucky to discover this facet of our mental functioning and can now find ways to work around the quirks and make use of our creativity and other positive traits. There are really worse things we could be faced with. I think we have to think positively & re-brand ourselves. If Michelangelo had a desk, I’m sure it was covered with stuff and he couldn’t find his paint brushes half the time :-) Probably no wonder it took him so long to paint the ceiling! (I’m sue there’s an art history buff out there who will tell me I’m all wrong about this but that’s my theory and what the heck – I’m going with the send button now…)
