I can easily imagine that there is a lot of treasured paintings, music, and other art forms which exist today only because of the creator’s mental “disorders”, whether it be ADD, depression, psychosis, or whatever.

I like to see posts from members who can report something positive about their ADD.

Toofat – I found this thread looking around tonight and read what you had written here and on the other thread about ADD as a gift or something. You have just a wonderful outlook and I have enjoyed reading your posts over the past couple of months. Your posts here caused this thought to pop through my head. I think you’ll like it.

“God gave me a wonderful brain to have wonderful thoughts. Then he gave me ADD so that I could have a bunch of them.”

The wording could probably be better, but I think you get the point.

Here’s to thinking of you. (Now I’ll have to go mix up a drink. See what you made me do.)

I am 59 and found out recently that I have ADD, after my 21 yr old son was diagnosed. As compared to many of the members who have posted on this site, I feel truly fortunate that my ADD has not been “debilitating” and that I have been pretty successful on most areas.

I have seen some posts on this site about “programs” that are supposed to help mitigate the effects of ADD and COGMED may be one of them. I am not familiar with any of them, but from what I seem to remember is that they are expensive and do not provide lasting effects. I suspect they exercise the brain, and like muscles, when exercised, performance improves. Stop exercising and the benefits are slowly lost. I seriously doubt that these programs provide a cure.

I, and keep in mind I am just “shooting from the hip”, would recommend that you find a book off Amazon that provides brain exercises or go to a site like Luminosity and sign up for a trial. Both alternatives are far cheaper and can be done at home. You can also try learning a new skill or hobby. What you want to do is exercise and activate areas of the brain you do not normally use. Basically things (diet and exercise) that are good for the heart are good for the brain.

I personally enjoy viewing lectures from the learning company. There is a course on the brain,

    http://www.thegreatcourses.com/tgc/courses/course_detail.aspx?cid=1580

that I really enjoyed. Although it does not discuss ADD, it does educate the viewer about brain physiology which helps in understanding articles and lectures on ADD. These lectures go on sale at somewhat reasonable prices. A university level course by the best teachers for cheap.

As far as COGMED goes, I would say save you money. I am sure there are those who have tried it and would swear by it.

    Caveat emptor.

I just checked the teaching co site and found

    http://www.thegreatcourses.com/tgc/courses/course_detail.aspx?cid=1651

which I shall order today. As you can see if you check the link, the sale price of $40.00 is far less than the normal price of $200.00 for the DVD. All course go on sale at similar price savings. Recently, they have really been having the sales.

I have a cheat sheet with all my account login ids and passwords on it. But as you say that can be a security risk.

I thought that if I ever get inspired, that I would have a prefix-suffix password scheme. For example, pick a prefix password which would be common for all accounts (Bi11e) and add a mnemonic suffix unique to the account. Bi11emc for mastercard, Bi11evs for visa, Bi11eadd for this site, etc. You could also use the hex value of the ascii for an alphanumeric mnemonic.

When you change passwords change the prefix (Bi11e) to something else and keep the suffix. That way you only have to remember the prefix as it changes. The suffix remains the same and its mnemonic trait helps with the recall.

Having an identity crisis? I think probably one of the best ways to determine if you are ADD is to take the test here and at

    http://psychcentral.com/addquiz.htm

Educate yourself by doing what reading you can, and watching the videos on this site.

If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it probably is a duck. Even if it is a little odd.

The psychologists I saw indicated that people are pretty well able to determine on their own if they are ADHD/ADD or not.

Even if you decide that you’re not, you may find some of the posts helpful in addressing whatever issues you may have that cause you to think that you might be ADD.

The people posting here are full of it … Advice that is…and experience. Just as ADD presents itself in many and varied symptoms from mild to severe, so is the advice varied and unique. Make use of it.

I recently got some shirts made up from Vistaprint. Four shirts for under five bucks apiece. They printed a picture I uploaded along with text on the front.

    Picture: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_131PhjUcQnQ/S9Qbn0LlEnI/AAAAAAAAAjs/TvdDUWN1BkE/s1600/StrangeC003.jpg

Text: “It’s an ADD thing, you wouldn’t understand.”

So far the shirts haven’t torn, unravelled, or bled. I think I’m happy.

Welcome Derek. I’ve been active on this site for about two months and since that time there have been perhaps 10-20 posts from new members. Feel free to rant and rave and ask questions. Everyone here seems to do it and we all know not to let any responses to our posts upset us. Responses here are typed on the fly and often don’t come out as intended.

I know that there are several members posting which have IQs from 125 to 150 and beyond. IQ perhaps gives an advantage, but it does not give immunity with respect to ADD.

It sounds like having identified your ADD, you are now able to address your problems and, from your post, seem to be “working yourself out of the ADD hole.” Good luck. I can identify with much of what is posted by the members, although from what I read here, I believe my ADD problems are relatively minor. But who am I to judge.

Robin Williams played in a movie “Jack” where his character aged physically at about three times the normal rate. Sometimes I feel like my mind has aged at about one third the normal rate. Like in the movie, a twenty year old mind in a sixty year old body, except due to different circumstances. Anyone else besides Rick and I have this happen?

It can’t have been more than four years ago my eighty+ year old parents watch me climb two stories up a drain pipe to retrieve my model plane I crashed on the school cafeteria roof. … For real.

Obviously, everyone visiting and posting on this site does so for a reason. They want to feel good by helping others with their thoughts, knowledge, and experience; they want to read of the struggles of others and feel that they are not alone; or they may simply be looking for a dog to kick. Whatever the reason, it’s OK with me. This site is to help people.

I enjoy reading the posts here. Most are interesting and thought provoking written by well meaning individuals. And some just somehow don’t make a lot of sense. Like this one will to me tomorrow when I read what I am writing and think, “What the hell was I trying to say?”

    @Dubrod

I bought a 72 super beetle about 12 years ago. Now I have it plus another 72 super beetle, two 67 and a 69 beetle and a 1965 21 window bus. They have all been restored and rewired. I do all the work except body, paint, and rebuilding transmissions. I have a small store of parts to fix almost anything needing replaced. I wanted a car easy to work on and cheap to fix. I have about half a dozen of the BUG ME videos. They’re great for learning.

I don’t know about you and Billd, but I find one of the hardest parts of any job is trying to remember and round up the tools needed. I suppose its that last 10 % of any job which consists of cleaning up and putting away the tools, that I fail to do. Or else, the tools are left on some job waiting (for 2 years) to be finished, so when I start a new job, the tools are scattered.

I don’t particularly like to make calls unless it’s someone I know. I think it’s having to try to explain the reason for the call to the other person without making a fool of myself by forgetting why I called or sounding stupid. Expecially if I have been on hold for a while or have to explain all over again to the person to whom I was transferred.

The scary thought is that I might sometime get one of those endless phone menus, zone out while put on hold, and “come to” when the lights are out and everybody has gone home. lol.

Talk about eating. I am not a morning person so I don’t eat breakfast. Usually I will eat lunch about 10:30 or 11 am to avoid the crowds and because I am hungry. I’ll eat supper sometime between 7 and 10 pm because I sometimes work outside until dark or am otherwise busy. If I eat earlier, then I will be hungry when I go to bed at around midnight. If I’m thirsty late in the evening, I’ll drink a quart of tea which in no way seems to serve to keep me awake. This works for me and gets food in my body about every 12 hours. If I’m busy, sometimes I’ll eat a whole lot around 1-2 pm and have a small snack (wine, cheese, nuts apples, etc.) late in the evening. My son (ADD) has adopted my habit.

I always thought it was a logical way to eat, my wife thinks it’s weird. (We live in the US.)

How about it guys, is it logical or ADD weirdness?

That’s sad. We went from a doc that charged $75/month for a script after a long wait in the office to one that charged $10 to sign the script as he went between patients. His receptionist has ADD. 30 10mg generic Adderall was about $43. I feel lucky. There does seem to be a shortage in this area (east Texas) of Adderall. I guess that I’ve managed for 59 years without it so if it becomes unavailable I can wait.
