I used to listen to Art Bell, when he was on. Something about his voice. That and aliens and other wierdnesses he talked about. Where I live, the station that carries late night radio is very far away and weak. This means the station comes in full of static and I have to concentrate on listening to the program. Oddly enough, just as I was getting into the program, my morning alarm rang.

    OK Cheez,

I use technology to help me. I use the Livescribe pen to record the lectures. I am an auditory learner, which means if I am paying attention, you tell me something and it is in my head forever. Now I move the pen around the page, taking notes, and trying to pay attention. When I drift, my pen does not. Because of the playback capabilities, I can listen to the lecture as many times as I want. This worked for my graduate courses as well as workplace meetings. We didn’t have technology, when I was in High school.

Focusing: LOL you are asking the wrong person on that. I am either all over the place or I am hyper-focused on one thing and the whole time-space continuum thing disappears. What I am learning is what triggers that hyper-focus and how to use it on MY schedule.

I couldn’t tell from your post. Are you working with a councilor? Are you living at home? Are we talking about high school, or college, or your first internship? Each one opens different options to you and makes different solutions to the problem. Which reminds me. I can infer that inattention is a problem, what other aspects of ADHD do you have? Do you have any of the other “Gifts” that sometimes “bless” us?

The only reason I ask, is you are asking for specific help, and I can practically feel the frustration coming out of the screen (hugs to you btw). I would like to answer your questions as best I can as a survivor of the academic system.

I went to Catholic school and was “taught” by nuns until the 8th grade. I learned early on, that if I divided my IQ in half, I was still smarter than they were. Having undiagnosed ADHD and Dyslexia, landed me in the corner and principal/s office several times a day. Unless you murdered someone, they would not kick you out of the school, because they liked the money from the parents. I was finaly put into special class, and the teacher there just made sure the bibs caught all the drool, and the kids didn’t hurt themselves when they banged their heads repeatedly on various things around the room. I had two teachers in Highschool who figured out I was bright. UT-OH… GTG… Ill continue. a little later.

    Beignet,

I *WANT* to blurt out things, but I have spent most of my life with people putting me down for the things I say, or the inappropriate times I say them. Experience has after 55 years, taught me not to talk. I have a continuous laugh track going on in my head… except the fingers are pointed toward me.

What happened to this site? I logged in here and the buletin board looks like a 3rd grader put it together. Between my dyslexia and ADHD, I can’t even find how to post a new thread here.

    Z,

Are you working with any councilors? Most colleges have a staff of people who can provide free help to students with “special” issues. They can work with you to find out what kind of learner you are. Do you hear things and remember them, do you see things and remember them… stuff like that. Then they can provide you with the tools you need to succeed, whether it is more time on tests, or something else.

    Hope this helps.

    SS,

Yes it is possible for ADHD students to learn math. I did it, before I even knew I was ADHD and I am no big brain.

I record lectures and play them back in small bites. That way I don’t miss a thing.

When I am working homework, I know I hyper focus on puzzles. First I set a timer. It takes me about 5 minutes to solve the average math problem, so I set the timer for 7 minutes. Hey! All work and no play… Then I turn my math work into a puzzle that needs to be solved and let myself go into “overdrive”. The alarm rings, and on to the next problem. Then rinse and repeat. This worked for me all the way through college.

The hard part for me, is to find that thing that triggers my hyper focus and something that will bring me back. Are you working with a councilor? A doctor? Someone who treats ADHD? If so, you can work with them on techniques that will allow you to get the information out of the lectures you need to solve the problems assigned for homework.

Tests are a trigger for my hyper focus. My dyslexia makes it difficult to read the problems, but once they are in my head, I am good to go. I can usually finish a test and check it twice (boredom sets in), and turn it in, well before the allotted time. Again the trick is making the work interesting enough to focus.

    I hope this helps.

I’m no psychologist, so I can’t say what is going on. I can comment on what happened in my house. At first my wife was ready to tear her hair out in frustration with me not remembering details, conversations, yet at the same time I am able to beat almost anyone in the “Cash Cab”. I would have to have the most mundane things explained to me over and over, while I can understand and teach Calculus and differential equations and apply them to problems in Physics.

This frustration has built up over the last 25 years of marriage. So, when we finally decided to get me looked at, she didn’t believe the diagnosis. Why? It’s because ADHD is a childhood disease like chicken pox or mumps. It is something “those” kids have… you know the odd ones.

It is taking us both some time to get over the prejudices we grew up with and the huge amount of misinformation out there. Even after watching the PBS special on ADD, she and I both are coming to grips with this.

Have you gone to be tested and diagnosed? This is an important step. The rest will take time. Remember… and I say this with humor: Normals don’t think as fast as we do. It takes them a while to process this stuff. Give him time to catch up.

Having had LOTS of experience with interviews. I can’t seem to hang on to a job longer than 6mo to a year. And I am over 50 now. I can’t tell from your profile if you are in Canada or the US, so I will speak to the US.

HR will not ask you your religion, disability status, sexual preference, or any thing that will place you in a group with protected status under the EEO act. They will ask you where you worked, and for how long. They may ask you why you left your last job. Since I am a contractor, the answer is simple: Contract ended. You need to be prepared for that question and NEVER bad mouth ANY former employer.

HR wants to be sure you can do the job and you can fit into the company culture. They can only ask your previous employers when you worked with them and how much you earned. Anything more can earn them a law suit.

As far as ADHD goes, my co-workers have pretty much figured it out. HR still has no clue, and I think I’d prefer it that way.

In the interview, stick to what you know, how great a job you can do for them, and you will be just fine. If you don’t know the answer to a question, ask them to explain a little. Sometimes they may even give you the answer, or let you talk about something very similar you have done in the past. Remember: they want to talk to you. They want to hire you. All you have to do is give them the opportunity.

CMC, pretty much anything wakes me up. A noise, the dream, it doesn’t really matter. Sometimes I just roll over and go back to sleep.Other times I just start at the ceiling thinking, until my alarm rings. It doesn’t matter whether it is a weekday or a weekend. I still wake up with all of these thoughts doing laps in my head.

Since I am being treated for ADD, I have found my usual 5hrs is not enough. I sleep for 6-7 now, but it is hardly restful. I am always waking up, thinking about work, family, all the little things I forgot to do, the things I might have forgotten but don’t know about yet… the list goes on. This is another reason I wish I was “normal”

OK I am trying to remain Anonymous.

Yes I am a gamer. I play MMO’s and MUDDs. I probably play more than I should, which is why I put up a timer, when I start. That way I get other things done as well.

I solve puzzles. The harder the better. It feeds my hyperfocus, and I can loose myself for a while.

Are you talking about the husband or the son? :P ( Just me being snarky)

When my wife and I decide on a course of action with our son, who by the way is an absolute, heaven sent, angel, we talk over what we are going to do and reach and agreement. All this is before our son hears word one from us on the subject. This way he can’t play one of us off on the other, look for support from the other and so forth.

    Hope this helps

    Larynxa,

I have been getting more since that first one. Whether it is because I am more watchful for them or there are just more now. I do not hide in the bathroom every time it happens, but it makes me uncomfortable. I try to not let it show.

I just found a great tool that helps me take notes. I am dyslexic on top of being ADD, so my attention wanders and even when I am paying attention, it’s anybodies guess as to what I am writing. I use a Livescribe pen to do that for me. It doesn’t care about how my hieroglyphs are written nor does it care what order they are in. The price is a little steep, and the pen might be large for small hands, but it is a lifesaver! … LOL is this pushing an agenda?… just kidding!!!

Laddybug as usual has great ideas. What ever system you use, stick with it. Eventually, it all becomes habit. Even when you are distracted, things will find their way to their place. So, have a place for everything, and put everything in its place. I am sure your parents tell you that all the time, but it really works. I have found that by starting off small, finding a place for one or two things is not so overwhelming. Then adding one or two things as i get used to it. Then it becomes YOUR system and makes sense to you.

Talk to your parents and tell them what you want to do and ask them for their help. If you talk to them in your “grown up” voice, they will listen. After they get over their shock, you will be surprised what they will do for you.
